Mr_Dr_Oink,

Title is a bit misleading

There are a few scenarios here.

  1. You own the game on switch and already have the dlc so pay nothing unless you want to pay $10 or have the switch online subscription for the switch 2 edition if you want the enhancements. For a total of $0-10 depending on your choice
  2. You own the game but dont have the dlc so pay $20 for that and then $10 for the switch 2 version unless you have the subscription for a total of $20-30 depending on your choice.
  3. You dont own the game so you buy the switch 2 version for $70 and the dlc for $20 for a total of $90.

This is not the same as the $90 game lie thats being told, but it is painted that way. To get clicks.

Paying $70 for a game and then paying more for an expansion is nothing even close to new. For example, Destiny 2 is free but if you want the DLC its gonna cost you between $150 and $270 depending on when you buy it as there are sometimes deals on.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Absolutely fair. An 8 year old game should not cost $90 all in.

I dont dispute that. I just think the article is misleading as there is a lot of talk about $90 switch 2 games, which turned out not to be true, and it creates anger that is misplaced. Even if the reality isn’t far from that lie.

I do, however, think it’s an interesting thought experiment to come at it from another angle.

Imagine the article was “8 year old AAA game and DLC at a huge discount” and the article said things like:

  • breath of the wild was ahead of its time on release
  • the graphics still look great thanks to the cell shading and art style
  • unique gameplay elements and a modern feeling combat system
  • vast open world with expansive storyline
  • on par with modern games
  • currently only $50 on this deal, a bargain considering everything you get for that price

From this point of view i think you would agree that anyone would argue its worth more than $50 and that its a great deal despite being 8 years old.

Nintendo games should definitely come down in price over time, but the point is its just so easy to spin something however you want if you use the right words.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I expect this is true. But just to point it out…

From the article:

It’s worth noting, however, that customer service representatives are often hired by agencies that don’t have intimate, accurate knowledge of a niche issue like this

So it is entirely possible that this is not true.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

From what i am reading only mario party jamboree and kirby upgrades will cost money, the zelda ones are free if you pay for switch online and metroid and pokemon dont appear to have any proce attached to their upgrades.

The running theory is thst most games wont cost to upgrade unless they offer expanded content. But expansions costing money is nothing new.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

That’s $4.17 a month. It’s even cheaper if you get a family account and share with your family and / or friends like i do. (I am actually UK, but it seems the US price is the most quoted.) And comes with all the n64 (and the new gamecube) games. Its the cheapest online service of the three main consoles.

Also, to be clear. Im not a big switch guy, and i think nintendo are a greedy company. I mostly play playstation these days but my switch is handy and there are some amazing first party games.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Ok. Let’s not misrepresent what i said.

Firstly, you dont round up 4.17 to 5.

Second. I said i am in the UK, so i dont bay any dollars a month.

Third, I pay for 1 quarter of £5 a month, which is the monthly cost of a family account. Which i said i have. So it’s actually £1.25 ($1.64) a month.

Forth, The games that come with the expansio are not 40 years old.the expansion gives you the n64, gameboy advance and genesis games, which are 28, 23 and 35 years old respectively.

Fifth, as well that i get 48 mario kart maps, as well ss some other games. On top of the online play which you get in the standard pack, and some other bits.

Sixth, i have played and completed mario 64 and bajo kazooie on the n64 emulator. I have introduced my son to mario kart 64 as well. I also am slowly working my way through jet force gemini. I have complete goldeneye played multiplayer with my brothers here and there and am working through perfect dark. On the GBA emulator i am playing golden sun. 10 hours is a severe underestimate for all that and more.

Finally. If you are salty about BOTW, then thats your problem. But dont go around lying about what i said to make yourself feel better.

Mr_Dr_Oink, (edited )

4.17 is closer to 4 not 5. I dont care if you spend more on meals than you owe because you dont see that. I was only pointing out that you rounded up the cost to emphasise a point that is invalid because i am not even paying 4.17, let alone 5 a month. So yeah i am gonna defend myself when, like i said, i am actually paying 1.25 (or 5 by your logic. Or would it be 0 because 1.25 rounds down to 0 in your world)

The lie you made is the price i am paying, what you get for the monthly cost. Again, you dont round down online access, multiple game expansions and a list of old games to just some old emulators.

You are purposfully ignoring features and increasing the price to make it seem like you are more rightm its dishonest and childish.

I have used emulators since the no$cash game boy emulator. For the most part they are good. But they dont play all games perfectly. Like banjo is full of glitches and crashes when emulated. Same for mario 64. Same for goldeneye. So not only are you underselling the nintendo switch emulator, you are overselling emulators like dolphin etc.

I appreciate the convenience of taking the emulated games away from the desktop due to the switches portability and if its costing me less than the proce of a cup of coffee per month then i would happily pay for the convenience. Its like netflix when iflt first came along. It beat piracy because it was cheap and convenient. Now that its so expensive the piracy starts again.

Did you just link to an article to show that they are removing games which actually just shows they removed 1 game. Since they added the service in 2018. Thats the most clickbaity article I’ve ever seen. Especially when they guy they quote calls for the return of a system that also removed games from the library…

Seriously. I dont think nintendo are a good company, we all know how greedy they are and how aggressive they are with lawsuits etc. But you are purposfully exaggerating to drive home a point that just isn’t true.

I mentioned BOTW because you did. I was responding to you.

Wtf? Are you for real?

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Ok… in terms of bills rounding up or down. If i am at a restaurant (to use your example) and someone says “what do i owe” and the amount is 34.17, i won’t tell them its 35. I will tell them its 34.17 but just give me 34. I wont tell them to give me more. That would be their choice. Why would you make someone else pay 0.83 more when it would only cost you 0.17 to round it off to an even number.

You want to call me a child because you think i dont know how to budget, based on you not understanding that 4.17 is not 5. It’s just not.

My credit score is near enough 1000 out of 1000, i pay a mortgage, i have a phone bill a car, gas, electric, council tax, vet bills, personal spends, school bills, savings etc no credit cards, small overdraft, not in use.

So yes. I budget… like a big boy. You condescending patronising jackass.

Yes, you replied to that other user, but your whole reply was about… wait for it… ME!

So i responded. And YOU brought up BOTW. So stop saying i brought it up.

There you go exaggerating again. “Hundreds of dollars”? I have been paying 1.25 a month for 4 years which is 60 not “hundreds” do you realise you are doing it? You are overstating almost everything you say which makes it seem more impactful than it actually is. Do you also think you have no money left when you actually have like, 100 dollars? Because you wildly overestimated how much you spend each month?

So you linked me to an emulator… great… what good does that do me when i need portability and i only have the switch with that function? I dont own a steam deck for example.

False dichotomy? Perhaps you need a dictonary as i think you have misunderstood the meaning of the word dichotomy. Roms having glitches is not a dichotomy… what is the other side of this dichotomy? What are you contrasting it with? And are you honestly saying you have ever found an emulator that can play conkers bad fur day eith no glitches? Because there isn’t one. The graphics packs aren’t up to it, and the roms are shoddy.

Perhaps you are trying to suggest that my stating that emulators are glitchy is not a reason to pay nintendo for one. Perhaps you are missing the fsct that i am already paying them for the online service for switch, and i wanted to mario kart expansion so even if i didnt also want the emulators, i would have them.

Perhaps you think everything should be free? As someone who rides the fine line between piracy and consumerism, i think some things should be free, but will pay for something if i find its more convenient. I dont care about paying 60 for 4 years of a glitchless emulator i can carry around with me. Just like i dont mind spending 60 on a single game i might get 20-100 hours of gameplay out of. I am sure you dont mind that either.

If its down to a cost benefit analysis, then I’ve done mine. And deemed it worth it.

Its funny how you ignored what i said about netflix, you saw the word and turned redder than the logo. I said that when they started the streaming service, most people pirating tv stopped. Because they offered a service that was more convenient and cheap enough that it wasnt worth pirating. I then stated that that has since changed as those factors wained. So what is your point? That you can’t read?

As for your summary of my mindless consumerism. Perhaps you should take a look in the mirror, you are blinded by your hatred of corporations and dont seem to realise that consumerism isnt inherently bad. Like with anything, at the extremes, it is horroble. Just like piracy. Nintendo might be a bad company, but the people who put in the effort to make the games, and the hardware, all of the work that goes into designing and developing these things that deserves fair compensation. I dont think i deserve that for free. I think i should have to pay for some things, because much to my dismay we dont live in a communist or even socialist world just yet.

Please take you antagonistic and arrogant stance somewhere else.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

You know, I’ve had a busy day at work. i need to take care of a 5 year old and 10 week old baby. My wife is still recovering from a c section, and i just dont have the energy at this point in time. When i do, i will come back and respond to your whole comment.

The only thing i want to say right now, is that i dont care that you dont believe that i have responsibilities and can take care of my finances just fine, even whilst paying a subscription to something i believe is worth the money. I don’t care because it doesnt change anything. I still have to deal with it all, i still have to be an adult and some random fart of a person on the internet isnt going to change that.

Respond soon. Might be tomorrow, but i would like to address all of that BS you posted.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Are you serious? Do you need help understanding the definitions of ambitious, weird, and unexpected?

Do you need a run down of all generic clones of games bioware and bethesda have released in recent times?

Mr_Dr_Oink,

It failed because it was boring.

It famously had people saying “once you get past the first 12 hours, it gets good” it had nothing to do with the setting. The sci-fi setting was literally what drew people to play it in the first place…

Mr_Dr_Oink,

You are all over this thread. We get it, you dont like medievil fantasy… clearly not a popular opinion.

Mr_Dr_Oink, (edited )

No! Its a joke. N64 has been on switch for 4 years. In that time they have released about 10 games anyone would actually play. The rest are pretty much trash. Tell me you have even opened “operation winback”

If they spent as much time porting games to NSO as they do to crushing emulators then i would feel like the money im spending for NSO was more worth it.

Where is duke nukem 64? Where is conkers bad fur day? Where is rampage world tour, clay fighter 63 1/3, diddy kong racing, star wars shadows of the empire or rogue squadron, donkey kong 64, mystical ninja, doom 64?

There was a huge pool to pull from. It just seems a bit lacking for 4 years when i can get an emulator and a rom pack and play with custom mapped controls at higher fps on any device i own.

They could make that happen. And i would pay for it.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I stand corrected.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

You’re not wrong. There’s a good amount of great games on that list.

The problem is that these are straight ports, bugs, and all.

The worst part is the janky controls.

On goldeneye, perfect dark and jetforce gemini you have to remap the controls on the switch settings and select a different control configuration in game to make them playable and even then the sticks are way too sensitive with no calibration options.

They release goldeneye on xbox 360 and fixed alot if not all of these issues and upscaled and widescreened everything, and it was a much better experience.

Some games play well, mario and banjoe kazooie are good. Not had any problems with waverace.

Lylat wars is a bit messy.

Pokemon stadium is fine, but less fun without the game boy attachment to transfer pokemon to use in battle.

Paper mario is great.

But this is just the 64. Then theres the snes, nes gameboy, advance and genesis. Each with a plethora of games I’ve never heard of, despite these being the consoles i had as a child.

I just think this wasn’t what they sold to us when it was announced, and it shouldn’t take 3 months to release a new title that no one has ever heard of.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Slightly bigger? Look again, the old switch screen has massive boarders and this one lokks to go to the edges as well as being larger by a few inches. It looks steam deck sized. I would say its a significant increase.

And i got the impression that the joycons would be magnetic. That would make connecting and disconnecting them MUCH easier and intuitive. The amount of times ive seen people struggle the first time with the joycons having the button to release.

Seems like a good upgrade to me. And thats not to mention the extra shoulder buttons on the joycons, the larger joycons, and the fact that this likely doesnt reveal everythin nintendo has in store for us.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/e1676e95-a115-4632-a025-4c7dd0153c0e.jpeg

I was talking about these buttons. And in terms of locking in, thats a possibility but a strong set of magnets with a recessed area and a connector seems like it would be quite secure.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

You know, maybe i dont know enough about games as i am a casual these days, aside from baldurs gate 3 which is a fucking masterpiece, i really like the 2 (soon to be 3) star wars jedi games outcast and survivour. They are like a much easier souls mixed with the 3d prince of persia (sands of time, warrior within, two thrones) games but are very story driven. I am very excited to see what will happen in the final game in the trilogy qhen it comes out.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Say what you like but people have been screaming for a ff7 remake ever since ff10. I think thats too soon to count as nostalgia. We just wanted ff7 to look like ff10.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Implying i have 70 friends

Mr_Dr_Oink,

He says in the video. He’s been a marketing consultant for some really big companies. No one is better to talk about poor marketing decisions than someone who does it for a living and for big companies. And his iew point aligns closely with what most people are thinking.

Tbh you can decide for yourself how valid what he says it. Just watch the video. Its only short but it makes alot of sense.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

But he is just giving an opinion. Sure if you want to scrutinise then his credentials matter but for the sake of this video we should take it at face value as its not like he is going to be taken seriously by sony. But echoing an opinion shared by many is important with the small platform he has.

Looking at his channel it looks like he makes games for nintendo. And it would appear he has done other work outside of that field.

If more people in the industry follow suit or if this gets more people talking about sonys terrible decisions then im all for it.

RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it angielski

Runescape is jacking up their subscription prices next month, going from like 12 bucks to 14 bucks a month. The increases range from 20% to 56% in price depending on currency. Players are PISSED about it especially since the company got bought out by some investment firm earlier this year, and they see it as a shameless cash...

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Thats fair, but equally you should read the post.

Like you have never had to dilute a clickbaity title before…

Mr_Dr_Oink,

The second sentence in ops post here on lemmy.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Well baldurs gate 3 was in beta early access for 3 years and it turned out to be an absolute masterpiece.

Your anger is misplaced.

Gamea would be better across the board if the developers and publishers all worked with players and tested the games properly.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Jumblie 🟢🔴🔵🟠 8 guesses in 4m 34s jumblie.com

One of my guesses was one of the correct words, but my last tap didn’t register, but honestly, i thought it was asking for popular films. I might have got it a little quicker with less guesses if i had realised.

Fun puzzle.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I watched a sunkey video for it, indont think there is any dialogue from will smiths character. Like they didnt bother to record it. There was one or two instances where he spoke, and it wasn’t will smith.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Its nice to see a low cost microtransaction, and nice to see that you can get the currency in game but really thats just the same as it was a few years back before it went full 100 dollar for a reskin mode.

You are defending a game by pointing out that its money grabbing methods are less greedy than another company.

Games wont make the billions and billions they make now if they move away from the in game purchases models but they also evidently dont need billions and billions to operate.

Some of the best games on the market were made on small budgets by indie developers and sell well because the are fun and people actually want to play them.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Case in point. Baldurs gate 3.

Single player (with optional co op multiplayer) but massively successful.

Not to beat a dead horse. Its just the first example that came to mind.

A huge amount of very successful indie games are single-player and even other AAA games.

They talk about the genre being dead but they forget that most games dont charge you to play them anymore. They make money through in game purchases selling cosmetics and battle pasees.

These game genres could be described as dead by the same criteria if they cost actual money.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I think you might be, haha.

But in the i terest of a fairer comparison, i had a quick google and found this game “atomic heart,” a generally well received game with high ratings and the following from Steam Revenue calculator

“We estimate that Atomic Heart made $55,756,625.68in gross revenue since its release. Out of this, the developer had an estimated net revenue of $16,448,204.58.”

New ip, single-player, shooter.

Comparatively, immortals lost money and tbey apparently laid of 45% of the staff who made it to avoid losses.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Stephenie sterling has been an absolute legend covering this. Been watching the jimquisition for a long time now and i never miss an episode about kotick.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I dont include bg3, elden ring and totk in the AAA category. AAA no longer means high quality and fun, it means made by huge companies with more money than balls. CoD is a AAA game. And its shit. For example.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I was simplifying my reasoning because its rant territory.

Essentially, companies like activosion dont take risks, they cater to a mass audience and produce the same games over and over. There hasnt been a unique or good version of cod since mw2 and blackops 2 days. Evidenced by them remaking both mw1 and 2 recently, because they know they have nothing new to offer and cod warzone could have ended the franchise. Since nostalgia sells games as well as popularity they just opted for cashcow remakes preying on players nostalgia and taking advantage of the disillusioned.

They call it AAA but ithe term has become ubiquitous with just popular games made by big profiteering entities like activision.

Its not nonsensical, its just not very well represented by my initial statement.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

AAA games originally meant games with massive budgets that innovated. They gave rise to story driven games with high quality gameplay elements . One of the first AAA games was final fantasy 7.

From wiki

One of the first video games to be produced at a blockbuster or AAA scale was Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy VII (1997),[4] which cost an estimated $40–45 million (inflation adjusted $73–82 million) to develop,[5][6] making it the most expensive video game ever produced up until then, with its unprecedented cinematic CGI production values, movie-like presentation, orchestral music, and innovative blend of gameplay with dynamic cinematic camerawork.[7] Its expensive advertisement campaign was also unprecedented for a video game,[8] with a combined production and marketing budget estimated to be $80–145 million (inflation adjusted $129–234 million as of 2020).[9][6] Its production budget record was later surpassed by Sega AM2’s Shenmue (1999), estimated to have cost $47–70 million (inflation adjusted $73–109 million as of 2020).[10]

As opposed to

At around the period of transition from seventh to eighth generation of consoles, the cost of AAA development was considered by some to be a threat to the stability of the industry.[16] Staffing and costs for eighth generation games increased; at Ubisoft, AAA game development involved 400 to 600 persons for open world games, split across multiple locations and countries.[17] The failure of a single game to meet production costs could lead to the failure of a studio – Radical Entertainment was closed by parent Activision despite selling an estimated one million units on console in a short period after release.[18][unreliable source][19][unreliable source] Triple-A games also began to lose uniqueness and novelty; a common trend were a range of “grey brown” first-person shooters that drew on the popularity of the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty series but did little to advance gameplay improvements.[20][21] Ubisoft game director Alex Hutchinson described the AAA franchise model as potentially harmful, stating he thought it led to either focus group-tested products aimed at maximizing profit, and/or a push towards ever higher graphics fidelity and impact at a cost of depth or gameplay.[22]

The limited risk-taking in the AAA arena and stagnation of new gameplay concepts led to the rise of indie games in the early 2010s, which were seen as more experimental. This also led to the creation of the “AA” market in the industry, larger studios that were not at the scale of AAA developers but had more experience, funding, and other factors to make them distinct from the smaller teams usually associated with indie studios.[21]

So like i said. AAA used to mean high quality but has lost that meaning as time has passed and game companies stopped taking risks.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

I refer you to my other response.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Who is your favourite smart arse?

Mr_Dr_Oink,

This being on meta, in itself, is kind of meta. Bit of VR-ception going on.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Duke nukem is where my mind went. With some of it being 3d and some being 2d and always facing the character. Looks awesome. I wanna get this game.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

You should watch summoning salt on youtube youtube.com/He makes slighly longer form veraions of this sort of video and as someone who has never done a speed run or wpuld have any hope of completing one i find it fascinating.

Plus the background music is so good on his videos.

$70 Mortal Kombat 1 Switch version called "robbery" as graphical comparisons flood the internet (www.eurogamer.net) angielski

Fans have taken to the likes of X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok to question NetherRealm's decision to market Mortal Kombat 1 as a $70 Switch release. It has been called "robbery" and "disrespectful" to users.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Yeah, the physics on botw and totk are so simple. It hurts my brain how basic those games are.

Two of the highest rated games of all time.

On switch

The most underpowered console of our generation.

But yeah mortal kombat couldn’t make the game look even slightly better because it can only be as good at totk. That really basic shitty looking extremely popular and highly rated game.

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Your claim about half life 2 is bold and would need backing up. Im not going to just accept your assertion without proof. That’s not how this works.

Totk has some frame rate issues here and there, but when you give playes the power to do whatever they want with a set of tools, you will always overload a game engine. Name any sandbox game that players haven’t been able to overload and cause frame rate drops.

Also, there are AAA games that struggle with frame rate drops on PC, PS5, and Xbox series X. Which i guess just proves the point of how underpowered those are… obviously, the switch is the lower end of these. Im not deluded. But claiming some stuttering in totk when players have set up chaos means it proves the switch is underpowered is just incorrect. Any game that gives you a set of tools and the instructions ,“go” stutters when there’s too much going on.

The switch is 6 years old, im not suprisdd its showing its age now. I am suprised its remained relevant and has games that are rated to highly.

So art style carries the games? So what? Isn’t that just ingenuity? And dorsnt it prove the .ain point of this thread? That Mortal Kombat could have looked good with a tweaked art style for switch but was just a bad port? If the product looks bad on the switch, then dont release it on Switch, i guess.

Ok, but if there are zelda/nintendo fan boys it follows that nintendo are consistently making great games and that zelda games are consistently great… you dont keep enough people gushing over your games by releasing trash game after trash game. Also fan boys wouldnt be enough alone to get a game that highly rated. Remeber that this game only released on switch, meaning it didnt have all the pa5 and xbox owners to help boost its numbers.

So whilst im sure the fanboys had something to do with it, its likely that the fact that the game is good played a kuch bigger part.

People bought a switch when these games came out just because they saw how good they were and wanted to play…

Sorry i think i know what you mean but i dont play the pokemon games. Is it the one with the shit textures, was it online like an mmo, i seem to recall one like that. Didnt interest me because it looked shit compared to so many other games ive played on switch.

I am LOVING Baldurs Gate 3 angielski

I’m just a little bit late to the Baldurs Gate 3 party, but I searched on here and didn’t see much follow up discussion about it after the review thread. I’m also trying to submit more to Lemmy so the communities can grow, so I thought I’d bring it back up now that it has been out for a few weeks....

Mr_Dr_Oink,

Oh, totally fair. Theres bugs. But not on the level of AAA fames that get churned out. This game sits in a completely different category to other games in terms of development and quality etc.

The point veing you dont need to wait for it to be polished as its been in that process for longer than any other AAA game at release.
