Always remember “The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.”
There’s a lot of bullshit in the Star Citizen controversy. Hating it generates a lot of revenue for Massively and The Escapist (two of the worst tabloids in the industry). Just play it once during a free fly before you judge. If everyone did that, these articles wouldn’t exist.
Pitchforks and rabble rousing is fun, but I actually play the game. It is a fun time, worthy of hundreds of hours as it is right now. Many people have thousands of hours. The growing number of players and growing revenue tell a different story than your ill informed guesses and chipped shoulder. This is as much a tech demo as any other early access game. I know this because I actually play it regularly. The lived experiences of the vast majority of players outweighs the angry whinging of people who don’t know what they’re talking about.
Who cares if it never finishes? It’s fun now. I have had much more than my money’s worth of fun. $50 ten years ago is still paying off in enjoyment now and it’s getting better with every update. This is what the overwhelming majority of the growing number of thousands and thousands of regular players all say. Crying about it doesn’t change facts.
Ten years on and you think their growing players count and revenue is still just hype? No. The people who try thebgame are sticking around. If it was just hype it would have died years ago. It is genuinely fun to play right now. I can tell you this because I’m having lots of fun in it right now. When is the last time you played it?
Where does any game spend it’s money? That’s not ever public info. The fact that SC is publicly posting its revenue is opening them up to this double standard they are better than other companies with. We know they just bought a massive new building to hire more devs, so the evidence suggests they spend their money on development. They don’t spend any of it on dividends for any already rich ultracalitalist investors because they don’t have any, so they already have every other AAA company beat. (Those investors also invest in gaming journalism).
They aren’t half as shady as every other gaming company. These things are blown way out proportion and CIG is held to double standards. They have crunch time and NDAs for disgruntled assholes? Oh no, the world is over, this company is pure evil like none other! It’s really not a big deal that this one refund has an NDA. Their others don’t, so it’s a weird thing, but to say this is proof of wrongdoing is fallacious grasping. To believe what Massively has to say about Star Citizen is like listening to what fox News has to say about Climate Change. Every little thing they can spin into making cig look bad they take, even things every other company does without issue. Hating SC gets way more engagement and ad revenue then almost any other kind of critical article in gaming. Just look at any post about SC on this community compared to others. It’s insane. And I don’t use that term lightly.
He turned into a snake and convinced Eve to eat the fruit of knowledge, he dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, and he is the real developer of Spore. His wife is actually a Hitler clone. CIG funded 9/11.
How come there are so few racing games coming out lately? Feels like it’s just codemasters doing their thing, some struggling indie games and a truckload of shovelware. I’m not saying it’s dead but wasn’t racing games one of the primary genres?...
Racing in VR is such a great experience, I’d love to see more of it. Simulation and arcade style. But you’re right, we need one with a robust, slow paced progression system. I remember really enjoying unlocking everything in NFS Porsche Unleashed, going through the eras, starting slow but getting slowly faster. Then NFS Underground 2 came out and still stands alone as the best example of racing progression by a large margin. Then it’s like the gameplay design has been going further back in time since then. I am using the same simple progression mechanics in new racers that I used in Sega GT 2002, and they were old then.
As to why, it feels like they don’t have AAA budgets anymore. The high quality simulator games like the Dirt series have to spend their whole wad getting the physics and performance right, there’s not much left for anything else, so it’s just menus and a simple money system. That’s just my guess, it could just be they need to hire a couple RPG designers among the gear head ones.
Squadron 42 is feature complete and is in optimization and polish phase. 30-40 hour campaign. It looks amazing. This was released this weekend, played live not prerecorded.
You sound like MAGAs discussing immigration under a Fox News post. Circle jerk of hate based on misinformation, but trying to talk reason to people who love to hate the thing they hate and don’t want to stop is not going to work. Keep on believing gaming journalists from disreputable tabloids who invent controversy for clicks. The engagement on Star Citizen hate posts is massive compared to others. Hating Star Citizen is directly more profitable for these sites. There is no oversight on truthfulness in gaming news.
CitizenCon was this weekend. There has been an uptick in hit pieces posted this week. That isn’t a coincidence. You are being being primed to react negatively to the content that will be posted from it.
No, it’s not an FPS. It’s 99% a space sim like Wing Commander with a few FPS parts. It is a full AAA game, maximum fidelity, 30-40 hour campaign. You don’t even know what you’re talking about. You could actually watch the video you have so many opinions about, but oh that’s right, it’s a conspiracy if it’s good.
I have hundreds of hours in Star Citizen and have enjoyed them all. That’s not very much compared to many, many others. They are growing in players and revenue for 10 years. That doesn’t happen to bad games. They release massive updates every quarter. They just bought a new campus in Manchester so they can hire more devs, on top of the existing thousand. It’s a genuinely fun game, right now, enjoyed by many. You don’t have to be one of them, but your tinfoil hat nonsense is just vitriolic skepticism from reading these tabloids, not critical thinking.
We’re out there, flying around, having a great time wanting y’all to join our space shenanigans. Just try it the next free-fly with an open mind. Even if you tried it before, try it now, it is improving every quarter, it’s a different beast now than a few years ago.
I’m not, I’m calling them capitalist, investor run businesses, which they are. Inventing controversy is an ancient, reliable way to make money.
I’m calling star citizen haters a bunch of gullible cynics. There’s an emotional element in people’s need to hate star citizen. I think they’ve just been burned so much, any time something cool is promised, they automatically assume the worst. If Star Citizen delivers, it would be very, very cool and the hate is proportional. I’m having a great time in Star Citizen with a whole bunch of people right now. Anything else is just noise, be it promises from the devs or internet articles or salty people who can’t just ignore this game if they don’t like it like an adult.
So? A bunch a rich people voluntarily funding game development isn’t some moral failing, it means they don’t have to act like EA and Ubisoft to make a AAA game and I can get in for a good price. Attracting capitalist investors, as is traditional, is genuinely much worse. I paid $45 and have access to all the same content as the whales. I have hundreds of hours in game. If someone stupidly spends their life savings on pretend spaceships and regrets it, it’s not on Star Citizen.
It’s not like everyone has been tricked for ten years, we know what we buy when we buy it.
Oh but you don’t understand, this game is taking a long time to finish. That’s totally worth aaaaallll these circle jerk posts and vitriolic responses. It’s like ten holocausts wrapped in a 9/11. Also, some rich people voluntarily gave them money. That’s evil because reasons. Also, a not rich person spent all of their life savings on pretend space ships an regretted it. That’s the games fault though, also because reasons.
Everyone has to know how much they hate Star Citizen. It’s vital to engage with every article and post about a game they don’t play or like because that’s how kind, normal, mature, not weird people act. They hate other games too and generally ignore them, but this one feels good to hate loudly and publicly beyond any other game, so it must be true. It’s not weird at all to bully people for having fun because the internet says their game is taking a long time.
The fact that riling people up by spreading misinformation makes tabloids money is not relevant to the situation. The people playing the game are wrong about their own experiences. The internet can never be wrong, the hive mind is always correct.
Lol, one of us certainly has been lied to. Your last point is blatantly false, your first is based on your guess about how AAA game design works. Maybe it does take 3 years with a game this big, I don’t know. I’ll trust the many, many game devs who actually play the game and roll their eyes at comments like yours.
I’ve actually played the game, bought it and have no regrets. Hundreds of hours, new friends, new experiences. You passively absorbed the groupthink. I don’t care if it ever finishes, I’ve gotten more than enough fun per dollar out this game already. Cry about it if you want, just do it quietly.
I posted that video because it was the first one I found, it’s not a grand conspiracy to trick you, jesus. Get over yourself. Watch the actual live one then, I don’t care. Still looks like a fun game.
Why do you need to publicly hate at all? These people are enjoying a toy they aren’t supposed to so now everyone has to hear your feelings on it? Y’all are nuts. Ignore the game if you don’t like it like you do with every other game you don’t like.
The haters can silence themselves by shutting up and touching grass. It’s a videogame, not a genocide.
Everyone knows what they buy when they buy it. No one was tricked. People who play the game keep playing it because it’s fun. EA and Ubisoft investors are indeed shitting themselves, using the magazines they own to twist this into a story to of failue because they aren’t getting paid, while happily taking the ad revenue your misinformed salt provides.
People with opinions on Star Citizen but only know about it through the hive mind and shitty artices means nothing. Especially when they try to tell the people who actually play the game they are wrong about their own experiences because the hive mind says so.
Jesus, go touch grass dude. If you don’t like the toy I’m playing with, you don’t need to devote this much energy trying to tell me I’m wrong for enoying it or being excited for more. It’s a videogame. Who cares if it never comes out. I’m excited if it does, I’ve already got my money’s worth if it doesn’t. It’s not worth this much energy to defend or denigrate. So I’m done. Post your misinformed opinions all you want, just try Star Citizen with an open mind one day during a free fly. Let’s just play the games we like and ignore the others and be done with it.
Don’t listen anyone here, positive or negative. Try the next free fly and see for yourself. Too many feelings for an honest answer.
But here’s my 2 cents anyway, ha ha: I enjoy it, they are pushing out regular massive updates that make it more and more fun every quarter. They grew a studio from 8 people to over 1000, which takes years to do, so complaints that they have taken 10 years of full scale development are incorrect. Some people don’t like the idea it may never be the full game they set out to make, which is fair, it’s possibly the most ambitious game to date. But it’s being made in good faith, reports of a scam are about as reliable as moon landing conspiracy theories for many of the same reasons. In the meantime, what they do have is already a lot of fun. You only need to spend $50 to get in, people spending more are doing so voluntarily and generally without regrets. They have more players and revenue every year than the year before, this wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t already a fun game for many.
Gameplay is like a second life in space. It’s very spaceship centric, but there’s lots to do besides pilot. It’s slow paced, the design does prefer immersion over convenience a lot of the time.
If you like big, slow (with moments of high intensity), immersive, cinematic games, or if you like sci fi it’s definitely worth a try. Lone wolf play is doable, but taking a role on a crew is more fun (at least for me).
I remember that one hangar! Oh nostalgia. You should try it again there’s a game there now.
They haven’t been saying two years away every since since 2016. It’s a running joke that they say it every year, but it’s not actually happening. That one in 2016 made everyone facepalm, even employees. Chris Robert’s is pathalogically optimistic about a lot of things, lol. Even in the Star Citizen community, we make fun of that sort of thing. We paid for Star Citizen early access, we have Star Citizen early access. If we get Squadron 42 as well, great! If not, it’s not that big a deal. Disappointing, but the world will go on.
I think they believe their times when we say them. The scope of things said after the 2 years thing in 2016 increased by quite a bit when their funding had another boom. They aren’t intentional lies so much as just being wrong an feature creep making dust of previous plans. But they have a lot more to show now than they did before, it is being made in good faith. It’s just had a slow start to build the studio from nothing and a lot of budget increases.
It’s definitely got a Duke Nukem Forever type problem. We will see a finished game one day, but the development has seen a lot of design changes partway through. We’ll see if we end up with a mess, but we will end up with something, I believe. And again, if not, it’s still just a videogame. We’ll live.
It’s a genuine early access game. It’s no more a tech demo than any other. You can be wrong about a game you don’t play, refuse to try, and don’t know anything about all you want. An uninformed opinion is valueless, a misinformed one is worth even less. We’ll keep having fun in it without you.
It is the exact opposite of vapourware, even. They have over a thousand employees in multiple studios across the globe pushing out regular, massive updates.
I actually do appreciate the clarification then, thank you. But I’ll still suggest to the readers of this convo, articles like these aren’t written for the edification of its readers, it’s written to bait engagement. The speculations of gaming journalists on Star Citizen is as reliable as Fox News’ speculation on the Mexico/USA border.
And as someonewho has been following following the numbers, it’s growing in revenue and daily active players every year. They just opened a massive new office in Manchester so they can hire more people. The people they do hire get paid well and stick around for years. If they were worried about cash flow, they have a lot of fat they would be trimming right now, but their expenses and revenue keep growing in step with eachother. They have no investors to pay, no vaults to fill. They make money and spend it growing the business. Those expenses represent 12 years of good wages and benefits for workers.
Star citizens success is a threat to capitalist, investor focused gaming. Gaming news is run by game industry capitalists and has zero oversight or accountability for bring truthful.
Because it is accessing petabytes of world data. In the old days, you’d store the world on your PC and they had relatively insane storage requirement. Now it’s just too much. The current MSFS has 300GB of content, but you can download areas of world data on your hard drive to cut down on streaming data in areas you go to often. So a lot people have a 500GB+ drive just for MSFS. This new one is supposed to require much less space.
It’s just using Bing Maps data, which is smart. Not everyone flies at 35,000 feet, low altitude flights look spectacular and are accurate in a way no stored world map could. The terrain is automatically generated from Bing data, not hand modeled. Every building is in the right spot, is the right height, and the exact right shape, and it costs me no storage. It’s an obvious evolution of the genre with all kinds of benefits. Like all airports on earth, even grass landing strips, that are visible in Bing Maps, exist in the game without having to be hand modeled or stored locally. It detects them automatically then plops down an in game runway, tarmac, and taxiways on top of the satellite imagery in the exact shape and size as the real thing. It’s really cool!
But it can be that detailed for nothing, so why not? They own Bing Maps. They already have optional extra high detail for certain areas you can keep on your hard drive, just as you suggest. That’s why some people have a TB of game content. That’s what the new game wants to fix. The Bing stuff fills in the bits that aren’t bespoke. In the new one it streams it all, and most people who actually plays the genre are very pleased about it.
After being incredibly disappointed by the release of Sims 4, I was someone holding out hope for Sims 5 that they would have realized, “Hey, people really didn’t want us to do anything multiplayer in Sims 4. Maybe that means we should go back and make an actual good Sims game?” But instead, we get this awful news that Sims...
Relative to its time, yes, but Sims 3 is peak Sims. It improved on 2 in every way, but the thing they did the best and left out of 4 was the create a style tool, which allows you to make any surface any texture and colour you like. You could have a wooden sweater and metal carpet. No limits. You could make uncanny replicas of most homes, furnishings and all.
I missed the days of Uncharted and Tomb Raider, those games don’t exist anymore, instead open world “everything games” have taken its place, AssCreed, Horizon, Fallen Order etc....
I haven’t played the second one, but in the first you were never not aware you are in a videogame. It was a nonsensical labyrinth of gimmicks. It is a 3D metroidvania, almost. It really sucked the life out of the story so I’m in no rush to play the sequel. I’ll be bored and it’ll be on sale one day and I’ll try it.
So, I’ve been getting into GBA and want some recommendations. I’ve been playing advance wars and really like it, anyone know any similar games? (Not fire emblem because permadeath is an annoying mechanic?...
It’s driving me nuts that I can’t remember, but I saw this trailer that I think was posted here a couple of months ago. That’s so funny you say that, Jedi Knight is where I first got to appreciate 3D acceleration, too. I must have racked up hundreds of hours in that game once upon a time.

Are there any good casual/low-stress mobile games that aren’t filled with microtransactions? For example: easy puzzle games, match-3 games, low-difficulty adventure games, or clicker-style games....
Honestly, especially games made by big, publicly traded companies. They make games based on marketing algorithms. Buying good games only improves the algorithm.
Explore a 1:1 scale Milky Way in a meticulously designed Starship alone or with friends. Try the tech demo on Steam, run through the cold and dark startup tutorial then find cool things in space. It’s already a lot of fun in its barebones state....
There’s lots of info on the Kickstarter page, but yes, each role will have lots to do. In the tech demo, there’s a tutorial where you start the ship up from a cold start to give you a taste of the engineering role. It takes a long time, you gotta start up the main reactor and distribute power. The ship has kilometers of pipes and wires that deliver power and resources around the ship, all of which need maintenance and repairs over time. When they go down, the components they supply go with them. Every role will have tasks, except passengers. Every role will be fillable by NPCs. If you want to be the lone head chef player on a ship of NPCs, go for it! Just pick the job that has the right amount of task time and type for you.
Landing on planets will be achieved by using shuttles, the big starship doesn’t land. I’m very excited about flying shuttles.
Combat is definitely going to be a thing, ship to ship as well as small arms, repelling boarders or boarding something else yourself. Ship to ship combat is lasers and railguns, nothing that requires storing explosive chemicals for munitions.
Other races will be procedurally generated, as will their attitudes. They might want to hug you and give you cool technology to use or they might shoot strangers on sight, or something in between. If LLMs get their training sources sorted, costs down, and are able to run locally within the game client, then alien races might have lots to say. But those are big ifs.
Essentially, the story is we’re humanity’s first long range exploration vessel. We’ve only ever been to alpha centauri, and that took a long time. Now we need to go out and explore. Players will have the option to share game databases, so while we are in our own games and locally hosted servers, we can explore the galaxy together like it was an MMO.
This game isn’t intended to be wall to wall excitement, this is going for a simulation, which means immersion, roleplaying, believability, and atmosphere are more important than constantly engaging in gameloops. It’s going to be more exciting than flying a jet liner in flight simulator, but this isn’t a very arcady experience. There is downtime, so I prefer bigger multiplayer servers to fill that time with hanging out or making our own emergent fun. That makes it more niche, not for everyone. But it is for me :).
The ship is really Star Trek looking, truly, but it’s getting replaced with a much less infringy looking one. We can all see this is the off brand version of the Star Trek game we wish we had, but they are very safe from a lawsuit. Once you get into it, you see enough of a difference that it’s riffing on Star Trek, certainly, but it’s still enough of its own thing. The new ship will really do this game a lot of favours in setting it apart instead of leaning into it.
They’re already almost half funded on day 1, so they’ll at least get their shot, which is always nice.
I don’t think they plan the same level of fidelity as other games, the character models and rigs are pretty basic, the bulk of it just building content like art for planets. Going from ship to planet in a shuttle, for example, will have a loading screen and it will load you into to a flat word that uses trickery to appear to have a curved horizon. Procedural generation of terrain and stuff is actually pretty easy these days, engines have it all ready to go.
So I’m fairly optimistic! We may not get every feature, but I do think we’ll see a 1.0 in a few years if funding keeps going this well.
I’m just a fan, I just have been following it for a while. The dev is very active in their discord, does weekly livestreams, lots of the game ideas have been discussed, and these aren’t new questions. These are the same questions everyone asks, so I know the answer. You can see on their discord I’m just a fanboy if you search my username, same one I use here.
But games journalists are the most ethical and truthful of all journalists and definitely haven’t been misrepresenting this project to drum up drama and clicks for years. It’s just a coincidence that Star Citizen drama makes their shareholders richer.
No need for an informed opinion here, I will keep the opinion The Escapist and the Reddit Hive Mind told me to have, they’re never wrong. Derek Smart? More like Derek Genius.
Well, I mean, I would have launched it first (as an AAA game), but I’m no game developer. 🤷 And neither are they, from the looks of it. Good at perpetually raking in money for himself and his family, though!
Look at the number of comments on posts about hating star citizen. If you were an unscrupulous gaming news company, generating Star Citizen drama equals clicks and money. Go watch the weekly Inside Star Citizen episodes or dev livestreams, read the massive monthly reports, use the dev tracker to communicate with one of their thousand employees on the forums. This is a game being made in good faith. How is a constantly growing playerbase and financial success somehow considered a sign this game is bad? How does spending that money on development , pushing out massive quarterly updates and inventing new gaming tech mean this project is dead? How does the most openly developed game out there mean they are clandestine fraudsters? It’s the shareholders of gaming news who are trustworthy here? Think critically, don’t just feed your initial reaction.
