Ashtear,

This is oddly common in ROM hacking/mod scenes. There’s been no shortage of drama in the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics communities, too.

At the very least I wish people would consider the bus test once a site/project gets to a certain critical mass. Insane to me that a site with this kind of profile never had coverage for that scenario this entire time.

Ashtear,

One of the last Web 1.0 bastions in gaming. Really hate to see this, especially when Discord is around the peak of its popularity right now. Here’s hoping a more future-proof alternative than that arises.

Where do you find new games nowadays? (Both singleplayer + multiplayer) angielski

Hi all, I know this question has probably been posted on the internet millions of times, yet I would like to receive some Lemmy-oriented answers. :) What are your favorite places, websites, or creators for discovering new games in your favorite genres?

Ashtear,

The bulk of my finds come from chat either on Lemmy communities (!jrpg, !patientgamers, or this one) or a couple Discord servers I’m on. Sometimes a game will catch my eye unexpectedly while I’m on OpenCritic looking up something else, too.

Otherwise it’s generally gaming news. I get that from also Lemmy/Discord, my RSS feed, or showcases. I always end up wishlisting half a dozen games during the summer showcases. My RSS feed right now is DualShockers, Eurogamer, Gematsu, PCGamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Siliconera, and Denfaminicogamer (Japanese site). Always open to more suggestions for the feed; the problem is not everyone does RSS these days.

Ashtear,

The Gamestop deal would have been 2002-ish. I actually hadn’t heard of the magazine before we started pushing it in the store. With Game Informer’s features mirroring our store marketing, it was the first time I realized how incestuous the industry was (easy to see the signs of it now when looking back at even older mags). The bizarre amount of coverage it had on the PS2 game State of Emergency was one example from the time. It’s wild to me to hear it being called reputable here and elsewhere today when it had such a fundamental conflict of interest for the vast majority of its run.

Ashtear,

The hilarious thing about you getting downvotes immediately is Kotaku led the reporting on this news this morning. Link is in the posted article, y’all.

Ashtear,

I predict some grumbling from the JRPG crowd that just wanted hi-fi visuals in turn-based combat without the reactive combat elements they are discussing here. I have to imagine they’ll make the system flexible enough to appeal to everyone, though. “Turn-based with a little extra” is the new hotness right now, so it’s what will be marketed leading up to the release.

Hoping to see another trailer soon, last one was great!

Ashtear,

This likely has less to do with cheating and more to do with making sure players use the game shop, whether it’s blocking third-party skins or bots that automate currency grinds.

Ashtear,

Also love cello, and it’s why I keep hoping the long-rumored new version of Final Fantasy Tactics will surface soon. Even with a fifth console gen soundfont, Sakimoto’s strings are so good in that soundtrack.

Ashtear,

Overall, Surviving Mars might be my favorite work soundtrack. Assorted tracks from Stellaris plus the Age of Wonders and Civilization series are also good. Something about the soundtracks in 4X games and games like them always puts me in a productive mood while not making me emotional and thus distracted like RPG soundtracks can sometimes.

Since you like FF, I’d suggest looking into Uematsu’s other works as well, especially Lost Odyssey. For similar ones in the genre, there’s also Yasunori Mitsuda’s work in the Chrono and Xeno series.

Ashtear,

And there’s still more to come, heh.

Hope you enjoy Reverie, it’s one of my favorites in the series.

Ashtear,

There’s definitely an argument for that, even if it can be hard to see at times because Reverie is all wrapped in the “Cold Steel” software package.

Big part of why I liked Reverie is because I’m a huge fan of Crossbell. Azure is one of my all-time favorite games. Loved Zero, too.

Ashtear,

I knew putting off Investigations 2 would pay off some day!

The first one’s great. Recommended for fans of the series that haven’t tried it yet.

Ashtear,

The accompanying Dragon Quest I & II announcement was a surprise. DQIII is the kind of game that could sell massively in Japan, so this is likely not the last we’ll see of HD-2D remakes.

Ashtear,

The Square Enix ones mentioned in the article are nothing earth-shattering–the Final Fantasy XVI PC port and what’s most likely the Final Fantasy IX remake. FF9 was part of the previous Nvidia leak.

Ashtear,

It’s the typical end-of-generation lull right now, but even with that, the brand is broadly, wildly popular. The Switch is approaching the PS2’s sales record. Throw in all the money from MTX now and it’s surely the most profitable venture ever in traditional video games.

That’s precisely why Nintendo can afford to burn up goodwill with trash like this move.

Ashtear,

Still the best implementation of ATB they ever did.

Ashtear,

If it is a full remake, as suggested by both the Nvidia leak and these listings, we have no idea what it’s going to look like in comparison.

People that don’t like early 3D games with super low framerate and sluggish transitions are going to struggle with the original.

Ashtear,

Someone pointed out that there’s quite a few MC voice lines here, and that’s a big wildcard for me. I thought Alix Wilton Regan absolutely knocked it out of the park as my Inquisitor, so that’s a high bar to clear.

Ultimately it’s going to come down to the cast, though. Won’t know until I get my hands on it.

Ashtear,

We’ll see tomorrow, but I’m not convinced this wasn’t all planned. Negative marketing is a thing, and if they had assets left over from earlier development, it would have been a cheaper trailer to make. People are talking about how absurd the trailer was, and that’s a far, far better marketing result than apathy.

Ashtear,

I edited the link to a Youtube channel that ripped and rehosted the video.

  • Ashtear,

I’m waiting on the remake. Preferably with great voice acting and less time spent in the unit builder.

For me, Stellaris was the sequel to Ascendancy I always wanted.

    Ashtear,

I knew a new Life is Strange was coming from Deck Nine, but I wasn’t expecting a Max sequel. So that’s exciting, even if the recent news about the studio was quite ugly.

    Ashtear,
    Ashtear,

I had a good time with Before the Storm and True Colors. The Expanse was less exciting (despite it being based on one of my favorite properties ever), mostly because the episodes were too short. That doesn’t look like it’ll be an issue here since it sounds like it’s a one-time release again like True Colors.

I didn’t like them as much as the first LiS but I see that game as lightning in a bottle in a lot of ways, especially for someone like me that used to live in that part of Oregon.

    Ashtear,

Haven’t seen any follow-up, but if I’m being honest, what Square Enix Europe did bothers me just as much as the dev. That’s gotta be systemic over there.

    Ashtear,

Depending on what you mean, all of Warcraft’s expansions are “standalone” now. You’ll get all the previous content with a purchase.

It’s the start of a three-expansion story arc.

    Ashtear,

Pretty sure I heard Jennifer English, too!

    Ashtear,

The studio head count is under 40, so best not to expect massive production values here. It’ll be a smaller game than Metaphor, for example.

That said, absolutely the highlight of the day for me. I’ll be keeping a close eye on it.

    Ashtear,

That’s my guess too. I figure this had to be just misguided marketing (or even ragebaiting) ahead of the reveal on Tuesday.

Though I suppose it’s possible this is the route they decided to go with for the game with a slave state setting…

    Ashtear,

The AI has never been great in the series for various reasons, but for whatever reason it just did not know how to play in Civ6. I’d either get crushed by the bonuses early on if I played on high difficulty or have the game firmly in hand by the Renaissance otherwise. Easily the worst game in the series for me as a result.

    Ashtear, (edited )

Heavy spoilers for the game, in case it wasn’t obvious.

I didn’t know that Nomura did these chibi figures. Terra here was also on the back cover of the Super Famicom box. Amusing how the screenshots in this piece aren’t from the Pixel Remaster while it’s advertised at the bottom.

Also wasn’t expecting this to get me angry all over again for the industry’s sudden move to 3D. So many of the amazing sprite tools like the one Nomura discusses got thrown away in the late 90’s.

    Ashtear,

If this means we’re getting more faction building like we did in Inquisition, then the title change marketing worked on me. That was why I loved that game.

A lot comes down to the cast for me in these types of games, though. I need to want to bug them in camp and do their sidequests or I’m going to feel like I didn’t get a lot of value.

    Ashtear,

I knew I was going to like this when it was announced, and the demo did not disappoint. There’s a fine line between being too easy and getting too puzzly for me with these games, but seeing the Confidence system is a really good sign that the full game won’t get to the latter. The default setting was too easy for sure, though; the boss fight was almost trivial.

Love the writing, love the absurd concepts at play. This one’s an insta-buy when it comes out.

    Ashtear,

Heh, was just talking with someone recently wondering where this had been since the announcement.

It’s amazing what a natural fit it seems to be for the genre. Hopefully it’s fun!

    Ashtear,

We clearly run in different circles. To me, the drip-feed marketing for FF16 felt constant for the months running up to the game. Meanwhile, the very first time I heard of Animal Well was when the reviews started getting posted (and even then I only took notice because they were above average).

    Ashtear,

SQEX did have significant AA-sized development for a long while, although potentially less going forward until their flagship rights itself (or they develop a new one). It’s less risky, and the payoff can still end up highly successful like Life is Strange or Octopath Traveler.

I guess the silver lining for them here is that FF16 had much better management than 13 and 15. It would have been a real disaster if 16 went into the budget overruns those two games did. Being hitched to a low-market-share platform and being released in a crazy year for gaming was also bad luck. Granted, FF16 and Rebirth not being good enough to move PS5 units is its own problem.

    Ashtear,

It’s tough. A long-standing rule of video games media–even well before web publishing–is that reviews don’t pay the bills. Hype gets clicks, as do guides now that independent guide writing has waned.
