SquishyPandaDev, w So, Unity is charging game developers per video game install now...
@SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net avatar

Hey boss Unreal is eating some of our market shares, what should we do?

Boss: Isn’t obvious, we drive the company off the cliff. Duh

God executives are the dumbest mother fuckers

BruceTwarzen,

It's actually remarkable.

alignedchaos,

Not dumb, just selfish, contemptuous of their users, and willing to destroy anything they have legal rights to for a cash grab.

Serdan,

Same guy: kotaku.com/unity-john-riccitiello-monetization-mo…

Hindsight is 20/20, but maybe devs should have seen this coming 😑

@SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net avatar

The problem, from what I understand, is that the fees apply retroactive. So your 2018 Unity game will now have to start paying

Serdan,

That’s my understanding as well. You could have a game on Steam that you haven’t even updated in years, and then you suddenly have to start paying for new installs from existing owners.

Actually, it’s potentially even worse. You could have a game that you released and then later removed from every storefront, but if people keep installing it, Unity will demand payment.

iHUNTcriminals, (edited ) w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?

It would just bring back street crime and physical boosting and robbery. Same thing for blocking porn… all the creepy 70/80/90s shit would come back…

theKalash,

I really hate ads, too. But I don’t think I would be turning to street crime because of them.

iHUNTcriminals, (edited )

Idk I guess I mean like boosted vendors. In 90s and early 00 I used to go to expos or even certain street vendors and they would have boosted or ripped movies and software.

And in terms of porn I mean sex spots scattered around cities and towns.

theKalash,

But why would this happen because of ads?

I don’t see this direct link between adblockers and being able to pirate stuff.

MalReynolds, w Can Pirate's Bay be considered "safe" if it is used only for non-executable multimedia content?
@MalReynolds@slrpnk.net avatar

It has to be executed to have any danger, so you’d need a zero day exploit for your media player, even then it should be contained at user level rather than system. I’ve not really heard of it happening, but it’s theoretically possible I guess, would take a really bad coding mistake. Keep your players updated and you should be fine.

hellequin67, (edited ) w [Request] Remove ads from Duolingo?

You can try a private DNS, easy to set up in Android and blocks ads in most apps and browsers

Libredns

Mullvaddns

can,

Are there downsides to using these?

hellequin67,

None that I can think.

They’re no slower from what I see on daily use and both are privacy focused.

WeirdGoesPro, w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I haven’t used a tracker with ads in over a decade.

panmeek, w Separate qBittorent admin container?
@panmeek@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’m not sure if that’s what you mean but if you’re using docker compose there’s a variable called WEBUI_PORT

matey,

That just changes the port of the bundled UI; it doesn’t allow you to connect a UI to a separate client.

panmeek,
@panmeek@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

oops sorry my bad

JebanuusPisusII,

Do you want to have a single UI for multiple clients?

matey,

Other way around - I want to have multiple UIs for a single client.

Sina, (edited ) w A way to disable laugh tracks?

I don’t recommend doing this. The dialog is far worse with the awkward gaps of silence.

I remember watching a few short vids on Youtube where people were making claims that Friends is unfunny garbage without without the laugh track, but the truth is the awkward silences kill all jokes.

Nerd02,

Are you good, mate? Is it just my instance or this comment got posted four times within the span of 30 seconds?

gibson,

Two generals problem handled poorly by lemmy. User probably saw an error of some sort when trying to post, but it was actually posting correctly.

Sina,

It’s exactly this! I was using the mlem app on iOS & it gave me a “posting error” message, so I tried a few times before giving up!

Kolanaki, (edited ) w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?
!deleted6508 avatar

I mean, there are still private, adfree trackers and things and I’ve been pirating before even Napster was a thing and the Internet was rife with malicious ads and popups. If anything, I’d pirate harder out of spite.

ruination, w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?

Even if they do remove them from the official stores, you can always go straight to the source and sideload it.

das, w Ripping Audible Audiobooks
@das@lemellem.dasonic.xyz avatar

I used Libation. It’s free, it’s open source and it worked great for me

conciselyverbose, w Ripping Audible Audiobooks

I think there are probably some that were loaned via audible plus or whatever, but audible says I have 440 audiobooks. Backing up the couple hundred I actually bought would be nice.

spencer, w Ripping Audible Audiobooks

I’m personally a big fan of OpenAudible. It’s not free, but it’s not crazy expensive and it does all the work for you. You sign into your Audible account in the app, it will pull your library, download each book, decrypt it, and convert it to the format of your choice (I usually do M4B). I’ve been using it for years and it makes downloading your Audible library in an ongoing basis a breeze.

Yglorba, w So, Unity is charging game developers per video game install now...

The most hilarious thing about this is that, assuming crackers prevent Unity games from phoning home, the best way to support game developers would be to buy their game and then only play the cracked version, never installing the version you purchased.

k_rol, w Is torrentgalaxy blocking users with adblock?

They do have to pay for their website somehow. One could argue you are not honoring other pirates.

mateomaui, w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?

yes, if pirating were more of a pain in the ass because of ads, I would still do it.
