Moore merges three sources:

“72% OF US DON’T OWN A GUN” Source: YouGov (6.04.2024), Pew (7.24.2024), Gallup (10.23.2023) — YouGov found 76% of Americans don’t personally own a gun. Gallup puts that number at 70%, while Pew Research puts it at 68%. Averaging these polls together, we arrive at almost 72% who don’t own a gun."

Comparing to what you say it’s pretty coherent, since the declarations of “living with someone who does” do not have to be accurate and may even overlap in typical quantitative research methodology that uses “representative” samples. “Considering owning a gun in the future” is a declaration even harder to quantify, since it may cover various reasons and speaks only in potentials.

It seems far-fetched to assume just on these basis that more than 30% of Americans actually own or may own a gun.

Of course it still does not say that there isn’t a widespread gun-owning culture, or that there isn’t lot of acceptance towards the idea that one should be able to own a gun. But to me it seems like most of the people are at least not willing to keep a piece personally, which speaks volumes.

Just in case: I am perfectly aware that it’s Moore after all, and that he may have a liberal approach to data, to say the least. But this time I can give him some credit for actually citing more than one source properly.
