Hey, not to discourage you at all, but from what I can tell most viewers are a bit bored by watching episodic Factorio videos. I would recommend creating longer-form videos that encompass your entire challenge rather than an entire series of it. It’s a lot less video output for the effort you put in, but you have the advantage of being able to narrate the entire challenge as a story. If you want some good examples of this, check out Dosh Doshington’s content. He doesn’t post too often, but when he does it always does well.
If it’s available for you you could always stream instead. A lot of people will stream Factorio live, then assemble a narrated video for YouTube from the VODs.
I watched it on my phone in 1080p60 and the scale didn’t bother me. It’s not like I have to read a lot of text and the precise position of the player character is mostly irrelevant, too. Like, if you get hit by a train or something, the screen will flash red and you’ll react to it, too, so I’ll know what’s going on.
Well, and I don’t look at the screen at all times anyways. 🙃
Doing a quick skim on my phone, your microphone quality is fine. I would probably lower the game audio in post a bit to make the sound more distinct, but it’s only noticeable when the game does loud stuff.
Krastorio is only a little bit more complicated to vanilla factorio. So the difference to AngelBob is massive. Krastorio is the easiest overhaul mod out of SE, AB, etc. Just give it a try, it’s not like we don’t all have a huge graveyard of started runs in our saves folder ;)
Also totally different topic the warptorio mod is very cool as well, and not crazy complicated! Just make sure to warp manually, don’t wait for the timer, defense will eat all your resources ;)
Krastorio is to me a Vanilla+ mod. It feels like the base game would if there was just more of it. Depending on your point of view, this could be good or bad. It’s still going to be longer than vanilla, and has few truly revolutionary mechanics, but it also doesn’t get as awkward as things like angelbob or spaceex.
For what it’s worth. K2 is the one modded playthrough I’ve completed (twice, even) and I would reccommend giving it a try.
I recently completed another playthrough of Krastorio 2. The endgame felt a bit empty without the Space Exploration mod that I was using last time, but still overall is quite a bit of fun.
Have you ever considered doing some voiceover or commentary for your videos? IMO, it might add some extra quality overall.
I think so too, but if I do it I want to get the quality somewhat right. I think for a video without sound the quality is okay, at least since I started recording 60fps.
I fear it might be too much work or I wouldn’t know what to say. It would be embarrassing to have it on tape that I don’t know what I’m doing or that I’m making mistakes.
If I’m watching a let’s play, I personally am not expecting the player to know everything. Part of the interest to me is watching a person newly experience obstacles and making mistakes, especially when I’m already familiar with a game that they’re playing.
As for what to say, I think it could be something like just explaining your thought process out loud. See a tech/research Item that interests you? You could talk about how you might be able to use it, even if you are making incorrect assumptions. (One of my favourite youtubers quite frequently makes guesses at lore of horror games he’s playing. Sometimes he’s right, sometimes he’s wrong. Either way it’s something I personally enjoy.)
You could then also verbalize how you’re planning to reach that tech, which lets your viewers know what you plan to do, and how you plan to do it. It could be something like:
I like Tech A, which means I need tech B to get there. But Tech B requires these science packs I’m not making yet, so I need more [item] to start that.
I wouldn’t worry too much if you don’t end up doing everything perfectly or according to plan. Getting distracted with some other project is a very common thing in Factorio, and I would assume most viewers would be able to relate to it as well.
All that said, don’t feel forced to do so on my recommendation. It is definitely extra work, and it is really strange to talk to the air and record your voice when you get started.
I’d say it’s generally pretty good. I’m not very skilled at audio balancing, but I think finding a way to reduce spikes in the audio from your microphone would help out.
I played SE at least a year ago, always wanted to give krastorio a try and then eventually combine them together. If only I had hundreds of hours of free time dammit 😁). Even by 'cheating' by using mods like transport drones it still takes forever...
Krastorio is probably still my favourite Factorio mod. It hits that sweet spot of complexity and new stuff for me. It’s the only mod I have finished to date. I loved the concept of Nullius, but the byproducts made my brain hurt.
K2 really does feel like Vanilla+, which is a good thing.
I recently started a Space Ex + Krastorio run with 10x the science costs. The burner phase was absolute hell and lasted like 5 hours cause I refused to automate anything
Should try Industrial Revolution 3. Electricitiy is like the third “tier” you get. You have to do burners for a while and then steam power where you are directly feeding steam into every machine.
I have a IR3 game going now, I am sitting around 20 hours with the first two science packs automated and just retooled my whole base around electricity.
