RTS means real time strategy, it’s stuff like warcraft, starcraft, age of empires etc. X-COM is turn based, so not real time.
If you are searching for turn based tactical games (I don’t really play RTS), yeah, Mario + Rabbids is very reminiscent of X-COM, only with an emphasis on movement combos (using other characters/enemies to boost your jumps, that kind of things). It does have multiplayer maps, though I have not tried them myself. Main campaign is single player.
In that move combo aspect it looks quite a bit like Chroma Squad, a tactical game with a cast of super sentai/power rangers-like actors who do combo stunts as they move. It’s pretty fun, though I have not tried the switch version and I think it’s single player only.
Fire emblem has two episodes on switch, three houses and engage. I have played a lot of three houses. It’s not for everyone, it’s a very long game with loads of dialogue, many characters, a lot of schedule planning etc. Battles are turn based, though in Fire Emblem fashion more about tricking the (basic) AI to break against your high defence “wall” characters while protecting your glass cannons characters. Difficulty being there is a lot of those (admittedly dumb) enemies with various strengths and weaknesses. It’s fun but again, single player only. I haven’t played Engage, because honestly, Its character design is terrible and it looks quite silly.
Triangle Strategy is another turn based tactical RPG with an heavy emphasis on story. Lots and lots of dialogue, to the point you may ask yourself when the strategy starts when you begin. It has branching story paths, with a rather unique voting mechanic where you have to convince your people to choose the path you want to take. Battle maps are typically less flat than fire emblem, and turn order is determined by each unit’s speed instead of being player turn/enemy turn. Again, single player.
Into the Breach is turn based strategy on a very small scale (each battle is 5 turns on a 10x10 map). It’s almost more of an open-ended puzzle than a strategy game, requiring you to use your squad effectively to defend key locations against waves of bugs with different abilities. It’s very good.
Wargroove is Advance Wars inspired, so instead of unique characters like Fire Emblem etc, you play one commander with a special ability, and armies of nameless soldier units that you recruit in cities you control. A remake of Advance Wars 1 and 2 is on switch too, I have not played it. Not a fan of this type of game personally, but they have their fans. Those are multiplayer, kind of like chess with more rules.
Now for something turn-based and strategic but completely different, Civilization 6 is on the switch, though I don’t know how well it works on it. It’s Civilization, so long games on random maps where you found your cities, find resources, develop technologies, trade, and choose a way to overpower the other empire. This one is multiplayer.
If you already have a similarly sized tablet, you could just buy a dummy HDMI plug, a few dollars, to add a second virtual desktop and then simply cast that screen to the mobile device.
There are pretty nice Android tablets now with 2.5k 120 hz HDR OLD screens. You can just connect it directly to the computer via USB, enable USB network tethering, then use something like the Moonlight client app with Sunshine screen casting server. With the wired connection, and a high bit rate such as 150 Mbps, you can get single digit millisecond latency and hardly tell the difference from an native HDMI display.
Tablets like those might be on the high end, but at least you’d have nice secondary display that’s a bit more multifunctional. Or just go with a cheaper LCD based tablet or old iPad, if color accuracy, refresh rate, or resolution isn’t a priority.
With this method, would I be able to use an iPad as a display for windows 10? If so, are there any downsides? I remember trying Duet Display years ago but they charge a monthly fee which is absurd. And performance was not great.
Looks like Moonlight does have their app up on the Apple store or iOS, and Sunlight has binaries for most operating systems. Personally, instead of Sunlight’s server, I still use Nvidia’s GeForce Experience software to stream games, as it takes less effort to configure. Of course, Nvidia may not be applicable if you’re using integrated or AMD graphics instead.
Although, with Nvidia recently deprecating support for it’s shield device, Sunlight provides support for the same protocol that Moonlight was originally developed against, but it’s also open source. I’ve not used multi monitor streaming with GeForce Experience, something Sunlight would be much more flexible in configuring.
As for connectivity, I’m unsure if iOS supports the same USB network feature that Android has. I’d imagine at least the iPhone would, as that’s a core feature/option for mobile hotspot connectivity, but maybe that’s nixed from iPad iOS? Alternatively you could get yourself a USB C hub or dock with an ethernet adapter and pass through power delivery, so you can connect your iPad with a wired network and charge simultaneously.
Or you could just use Wi-Fi, but with wireless networks dropping and retrying packets, that’ll impact latency or bitrate quality when casting displays. Although for something mostly static like discord windows, that’s probably less of an issue. Windows 11, and maybe 10, also have a hotspot mode, where you could share your wired network via your PCs wireless radio via and ad hoc Wi-Fi SSID. That could reduce latency and improve signal reception, but you’d have to start the hotspot setting every session or whenever the device disconnects from windows’ hotspot for more than 15 minutes or something.
You could try other remote display streaming software as well, like Parsec. However they have a online account login requirement with the freemium model, so I prefer the open source client Moonlight instead. However parsecs a lot easier too use when streaming from outside your home, or when remotely single screen co-oping with friends, without having to configure firewalls or domain names.
Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age. Luckily, people are still making amazing fan missions and entire campaigns for both entries in the franchise after over 20 years. That’s probably the best outcome a commercial game can have…

I haven’t personally tried them, but there are a lot of monitors on Amazon that are meant for Raspberry-Pi’s. I was looking at them myself but I instead decided to get an old monitor for free off of Freecycle. I made a post there and a bunch of people offered a bunch of old ones they weren’t using any more (like the ubiquitous Samsung 720N).
Also, I already have a second monitor but it’s too narrow for discord; as in the window can’t be made small enough. Maybe it’s just a GNOME thing, but I’m not sure discord will ‘fit’ on those small screens.
Ive used those, they all seem to be pretty similar in hardware and work fine. Might be out of the range of scaling things to a “normal” size with built in OS scaling settings, but still usable. I was expecting the color to be terrible, but in my experience it’s fine.
I’ve just given them away on reddit. The trading sites are fine but rarely does anyone have a key I want, while also wanting a key that I have. Just easier to donate to a random gamer.
On top of dynamic ads, another problem would be decentralisation of podcasts. Many of them are released on several platforms simultaneously, and some sort of extra work would be needed for this to work accordingly independent of where you’re listening to a particular podcast to.
I agree partially. For indie devs: get the game directly from the dev if possible, never get the codes, because the dev doesn’t really get money for those.
With AAA games, the picture is different. The business model for most has now pivoted to be about extracting money to the point where its absurd. And for them, I have absolutely no qualms with taking advantage of their bad business decisions.
For Humble Choice, the charity gets 5%, and there’s no way to adjust that as far as I know, so you’re worried about a whole $0.60 per membership, assuming you paid full price for the month at $11.99. If you managed to get it at $8, it’s $0.40.
If you’re going to be upset about something, save it for non Choice bundles, where you can actually adjust how much the charity gets.
And even then, if I have most everything in the bundle, I’m still not paying $25 or whatever for it.
What’s crazy to me in light of this post’s exchanges is that often these cheap keys show up a day or more after Choice or a bundle goes live, and there may be only one or two keys per merchant, so it’s entirely possible people are buying the bundles, and just reselling the keys separately to make a buck after the publishers and charities already got their cut. Maybe, or not.
