LwL, do games w Would you prefer if games had a separate difficulty setting for boss fights?

I have the opposite issue, so yes. I don’t particularly enjoy having to constantly pay attention to every enemy, but I enjoy learning a boss fight for an hour or two. I’ve also played a few games where dealing with random enemies felt harder than dealing with bosses due to sheer numbers, and it would help with that too.

So I don’t think it’s really a design problem. If you know exactly what you want your game’s experience to be, then don’t add it. But I’d argue for most games it isn’t integral to the experience how the difficulty of normal mobs vs bosses compares, and people have different preferences for it.

Nobody going to mention that this is likely to stop people from using devices like xim to spoof a controller while using keyboard and mouse? I know that this will likely be worked around but I’m sure that workaround gives Microsoft legal standing to go after the manufacturer. Still doesn’t make this any less shitty for someone using a third party controller and not cheating with it though.

beyondthegrave,

Great! So I can’t use a hitbox on street fighter or my choice of racing/flight sim rig in games that aren’t first person shooters because of a problem that affects a genre I’m not even playing.

What a great solution that’s not far-reaching, extremely heavy handed, and has a great potential for Microsoft to milk customers and small businesses alike! /s

To me this seems like solving the wrong problem. Ever since Souls, too many games get obsessed about making their boss encounters challenging but making the main level gameplay just tedious filler. AC6 missions often feel like that. Imho the correct action is to refine the gameplay and figure out your core loop, instead of having massive difficulty spikes.

This is the gameplay equivalent of the “Whisper and Explosion” problem.

This seems counter to Microsoft’s gaming accessibility push though, doesn’t it? Now if some niche manufacturer wants to make a controller designed for use by people with some rare mobility condition, the manufacturer will have to go through extra hoops to get this license bullshit out of the way.

Nice job, Microsoft. We all know the ticket to accessibility is more hurdles.

Kit,

To play devil’s advocate, I suspect that the majority of unauthorized 3rd party devices were designed for cheating versus mobility needs. Microsoft has fantastic accessibility accessories first-party that hopefully will meet the majority of needs.

beyondthegrave,

A lot of devices are just adapters to allow you to play fighting, racing sim, flight sim, rhythm games with controllers from other platforms because these niche genres are even smaller on Xbox and go completely ignored by large accessories companies.

That’s not going to change once these devices are blocked. It’s a very heavy handed (and potentially lucrative) approach to stopping FPS cheaters.

They were making strides with the FGC getting SF6 and adding Guilty Gear Strive to Gamepass and then do this. Makes no sense.

I do like demos, I’ve bought a few games from them. I bought Factorio years and years ago because of that. I liked the Next Fest on Steam and have wishlisted a few games for when they leave Early Access. I don’t buy ea games (or EA games, lol). The most recent demo game that got me was dotAGE. It’s slightly in the vein of other settler/logistics games but it’s quirk is that you unlock more options for the next game by losing, a la rogue-likes. Also has random events.

Demos work well for me, because I like games based on their minor details. UI/UX is important to me, so the original Dwarf Fortress didn’t work for me. I also like QOL features a lot, 90% of my mods are based on QOL shortcomings, so if a game is just awful then I’ll avoid it. There were a few demos that I quit within 15 minutes because they were too unpolished. (I’m sure they’ll be fine in time, but this was too early for them.)

I did this with Ghosts of Tsushima. I played on hard mode but when I dueled against other samurai I often dropped to easy mode after getting destroyed fifteen or twenty times

Not really. You just use whatever difficulty scaling value you’d use for “easy” for specific enemies/encounters.

    RGB3x3,

It’s trivial to change variables like health and damage. Does it make for a nuanced difficulty slider? No. But it’s better than nothing.

The more accessibility-focused devs could change enemy spawn rates, attack speeds, attack patterns, enemy spawn types, and many more.

Inclusivity is never a bad thing.

Oh for sure. If we’re talking accessibility then yeah, it’s a different ball game entirely. Accessibility for everything is hard. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done, just saying it’s hard.

All of the selfish things I’m learning from the comments in this thread about what Microsoft has been doing with their console such as banning aftermarket tech like controllers or generic SSDs is why I finally quit buying consoles entirely years ago and why I stopped paying for Xbox live. Enshitification is a real thing, my dudes.

    haui_lemmy,

I‘m very happy with the steam tv link app. It works great and you have a lot more games to choose from afaik.

The ones I know are already listed. Like Arc Survival, RimWorld, Eco.

But there’s also 7days2die which has a post apocalyptic zombie setting though.

Farthest Frontier, like Anno, they are strategy games though.

Modded Minecraft is probably your best bet, as so make you go from stone tools to scifi jetpacks with laser guns.

Sadly I’ve seen a few games available for free recently which are slightly deceptive in mentioning that they’re actually only demos. The example that sticks out is Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, not to be confused with Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition (Base Game), a paid DLC which is actually the game. Obviously you see what’s going on pretty quickly, but the headline “game is free” is not the same as “demo available”!
