I love Lethal Company :) It's so fun and silly, and it has ridiculously deep mechanics that keep it interesting to play for hundreds and thousands of hours. I've been playing it solo for a while now and it's a really good challenge.

@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Damn, i can’t imagine playing solo. I struggle just playing with two people sometimes. Major respect to you

my friends and i can never get past one or two quotas before we’re eliminated. we end up drowning on the way back to the ship or not finding enough scrap in time ;-; still fun though

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

The game can be brutal. I think my friend who hosts backs up the save every quota just in case, we’ve never had to use the backup for this save yet though (we’re about 4-5 quotas in i think?)

I’ve been curious about Lethal Company, but I’m not a streamer and I don’t have friends to play with.

That said there’s another game almost identical to LC called Murky Divers and instead of going around different research stations on different planets, you’re cleaning out research stations underwater.

You have a sub that you use to go around the ocean, and there’s like a radar to help you navigate, avoid creatures and obstacles, and find locations to actually go into. There are all manner of creepy underwater creatures and anomalies to find/avoid, and I’m sure there’s at least one giant sea creature that can come and fuck you up if you’re not careful.

Tbh I didn’t get very far because as soon as I pulled up to a location and got out of the sub, I freaked out and turned the game off. I ended up refunding it because, again, I don’t have friends to play with and I’m not a streamer lol. But it did seem like an interesting spin on the concept.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I just looked it up. It looks interesting. I’ve had some people recommend me REPO when talking about LC, but never Murky Divers. I’ll have to pick them both up at some point

Pretty sure you can drop the ‘until I forgot’ part.

I probably could lol. At this point i only keep it for consistency. It’d bother me just lobbing that bit off after 257 days

Good enough for me. I’ve installed it to my phone and I’ll probably never play it or think about it again, but there’s a chance I’ll give it a try someday!

Coelacanth, do games w Is Baldurs Gate 3's voice acting so great that it ruined other games for me?
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

BG3 is great and all but there are other games with at least equal voice acting quality. For all its qualities I never felt like “wow, I’ve never seen voice acting like this in a game!” when I played BG3. It’s really good and really consistent but nothing earth shattering.

I know I bring up Disco Elysium a lot, but that is one game where I got repeatedly shocked at the quality and diversity of the voice acting. With the exception of one single character I think it’s acted to absolute perfection.

I also didn’t really feel the same about Alan Wake 2 like, at all. I thought it had superb acting (both voice and full video segments) and probably hold the quality of its acting above BG3 personally. Alan Wake 1 less so.

MrQuallzin,

Disco Elysium was my first thought as well. Such great voice acting! It is easily my favorite game, and now I’m looking forward to Hopetown

False,

Which character did you not like?

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I don’t think Ruby works well but I suspect it’s a problem with direction rather than the voice actor themselves.

SippyCup,

mass effect and the first few dragon age games had great acting, Kingdom come has great acting, most of the Sony exclusives have great acting, it’s out there. It’s just rare.

p03locke,
@p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I second Disco Elysium’s voice acting and also all of Supergiant Games catalogue, especially Bastion, Transistor, and Hades. Portal 2 is the most hilarious video game of all time, and a major part of that is its voice acting.

The Stanley Parable, Borderlands 1/2, Prey, System Shock 1/2, the Bioshock series, SOMA, the new Doom games, Path of Exile, all elevated by their voice acting.

snailboy,

I’d also put Still Wakes the Deep on that list.

Venicon,
@Venicon@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. BG3 is outstanding but I loved AW2, thought the acting and Mocap etc was brilliant

@anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

One thing I find jarring about BG3 is the lack of vo for the player character. It seems like a weird omission in this day and age. (Not counting the dumb ‘I clicked here, so my player has to say something’ vo. Like, shut the fuck up with your dumb chess references, Gale!)

brucethemoose,

It’s supposed to be immersive, I think, so as not to force a voice that doesn’t match the roleplaying in your head.

I’m with you, though, I’d much prefer VA.

Elevator7009,

I am in the other camp, I like the immersion.

I also have a tendency to not bother with VA, though, and to just click through the second I finish reading the dialogue, except for lines in particularly dramatic parts of the story. Sometimes not even then. Just figure I’d offer a counter opinion especially since this thread is probably going to be full of people who always choose voice acting when it is an option, given the thread is all about it. I am glad so many people derive joy from it, just because it is Not For Me doesn’t mean I think it’s Bad And Worthless :)

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I played BG3 straight after Cyberpunk and that really stood out to me as well. The immersion and emotional impact of voiced protagonist lines really got me invested in Cyberpunk in a way I missed in BG3.

Lesrid,

They recorded some lines for the custom character. They think aloud when you approach the gith gank squad.

They also reverted a decision to have all the origin characters do a bizarre past tense narration in favor of the present universal narration the familiar narrator VA does present tense. Maybe they abandoned having the player character speak when they changed that course.

kieron115,

I think the silent protagonist choice is valid in more of “sandbox” story like BG3. Speaking for myself, voiced protagonists tend to “lock” me into a specific character. I absolutely love the voice acting for Geralt of Rivia but when I play a witcher game I’m not inserting myself into the game, I’m becoming Geralt and making choices based on how I believe Geralt would make them.

anakin78z,
@anakin78z@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t really see it being a sandbox. I mean, all answers are given, and you select from those choices. That’s the same as other games that have pc vo. I feel like it would have made more sense to have no voice options at all, and to just get rid of the ridiculous quips. That way, you create your own voice in your head. In no universe would the character I created complain about having to put her hands onto everything before opening a door.

Anyway, not a big deal, but like I said, it was a bit jarring.

wolfinthewoods,

Haha, right?

Walican132, do gaming w Finally Summited on Celeste Classic and I didn't Throw my Laptop Out of the Window!

Jesus. Sub 800 deaths is super impressive. Good job friend.

wolfinthewoods,

Haha, and here I was thinking that I did horribly. I saw someone on a random reddit thread say they did it in 400 and something.

As I was typing this out I rechecked the thread and they we’re playing the full PC version with assist mode on. Apparently the PC version has the original playable within the game at some point. A quick Google search put the average at 1000-1200 or more deaths for the Pico-8 version.

So, damn. That makes me feel pretty awesome lol. Thanks for the kind words, you made my day!

apotheotic,

I played the pico-8 version for the first time after the full game including all the B/C sides and farewell, so it took around 100 deaths, but thats with a significant amount of experience for the type of platforming Celeste offers and the type of level design Maddie and co tend toward.

wolfinthewoods,

Yeah, I dabbled a bit with the full game since I own it through itch.io. But never played past the third stage. I’m no stranger towards brutal platformers though, so maybe that gave me a little bit of a boost. I can hold my own with fairly difficult games and have even tried my hand at some Mario Kaizo hacks. That said, I still felt like I was doing a lot worse than I was apparently. It’s also been quite some time since I really took on a challenge of this difficulty, as I have been mostly been playing cozy stuff like TOEM and GNOG lately. I’m really enjoying the change of pace though, it feels good to beat a good challenge like this again. I’m playing through Celeste Classic 2 now, and I’ll be playing the full Celeste soon as well.

apotheotic,

Full Celeste is a fucking joy. With experience in kaizo hacks and such you’ll adore the b/c sides and farewell. Maddie is a Mario romhacker, after all

wolfinthewoods,

Oh, that’s awesome. I didn’t know they were. I’m excited ;D

For me I stopped playing because the switch is a horrifically uncomfortable console that can barely render the game at a playable frame rate, let alone a good one

Really should emulate it sometime

lime,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

if you’re willing to try softmodding, you can comfortably overclock the switch to run tears at 60 in almost every situation.

easily3667,

Works well in emulator

Did stop playing cause I was bored of the repetition and the unskippable cutscenes. Aka I don’t actually enjoy Nintendo games.

endeavor,

Emulate it on deck, I heard it does great there.

Abnorc,

I’m reading online that the game doesn’t even maintain 30 FPS on the switch in docked mode. That’s kind of crazy for a console game released in 2023. I get that it’s a cheaper console, but at some point, they need to bite the bullet and just manufacture something with better hardware. No wonder people are trying their hardest to emulate the switch.
