+1 on the Max Payne mention…great game!

Came out near the time of my favorite PC game, Unreal Tournament.

As far as arcade games, I’d say maybe Rygar or Dragon’s Lair…but those are so old (like I am) that I might not be remembering them so well?

GooberEar, do gaming w I'm doing my part (unfortunately)

…yet.

It’s my retirement plan. Buy the games now when they’re on sale with the intention that one day, perhaps when I retire at 80, I’ll have a plethora of time on my hands to finally play all the games in my backlog except I’m certain that I’ll be so senile by then that I’ll probably end up playing the same one over and over for what seems like the very first time each time I fire it up.

Those Tankies are looking for me, that’s a certainty.

Sonic 2 or Sonic CD depending on the day for me

Super Mario Bros 3. It barely makes the cutoff, releasing jn 1990 in North America. But man, it is something special. I completely understand why people prefer Mario World, but Mario 3 feels like the peak of the 2d franchise for me, and everything after that is just reiterating what it perfected.

Sonic 2 and Crash Bandicoot 3 are up there, too. The first time I played Crash especially, my mind was blown. There are several games that scratch the same itch as Mario and Sonic, but I’ve not found a single game that feels like Crash Bandicoot. Gamers were spoiled in the 90s. …unless you bought from a company that wasn’t Nintendo or Sony.

Sonic 2. It came bundled with a lot of Sega Genesis consoles.

A fantastic game that you can technically complete in a sitting.

I'm rather a fan of Apogee's Secret Agent. I loved it back in the day and then enjoyed the HD remaster of it a few years back.

Probably Mario 64, just because it was so revolutionary at the time.

Fluffy_Ruffs,

It created a genre. And it was surprisingly competent at what it sent out to do. In hindsight it was a miracle. Brand new technology harnessed to birth the 3D platformer. It was amazingly ambitious all around.

I feel like I'm the only person that grew up with Mario 64 but doesn't love it. I was really excited by it initially but when I played the game properly it just had this oppressive feeling of isolation and melancholy to it that was so off-putting.

I can proudly say that every game I have on Steam or any other platform that has 0 play time, is a game I obtained for free.

Probably Metroid Prime but some days I think it is Dark Souls 1. Both are similar in terms of trying to embody an adventure with strong environmental storh telling.

6 golden coins. Mario is so slippery and floaty

Sektor, do games w Assetto Corsa Evo devs quietly changed Steam description, paving the way for Early Access price hike

Since the sim racing “community” is extremely biased towards their favorite game, i see no reaction and lots of understanding from fans.

Johnny_Flashbang,

I saw one comment on Steam: “I hope so because it really made no sense at all selling the game at its current price. I feel I didn’t really pay enough given the typical cost of games”.

Eagle Dynamics would like to have such fans in DCS.

Sektor,

Fan is short for fanatic.

lol, poor lads. The effort they put in each DLC is astronomical.

BlemboTheThird,

Ain’t no way that’s a real person, who tf could possibly type that out and click post without a moment of introspection

Zahille7,

Plenty of G*mers out there who would gladly just give their wallet over to their favorite developer/publisher. Even here on Lemmy. I even got downvoted for telling someone that no one was forcing them to buy the next new console when it comes out, and they replied that yes they will if their partner finds out about a particular new game. I was flabbergasted.

It doesn’t surprise me at all. In fact I’ve seen other similar comments on other steam games that people like riding the dick of.

ETA: Comment in question

villainy,

Kunos has built a lot of good will in the community with the modability of AC and long term support for both AC and ACC. The AC Evo early access has been real clunky but they earned their fans and their understanding.

Sektor,

Will EVO be modable? Will it need always online to play singleplayer?

Skua,

They've said it will be moddable in the full release and that they intend to create their own platform to host mods

Sektor,

That needs to be taken with a grain of salt after this silent move.

Skua,

I agree, although I think that they would understand how harmful a lack of mod support would be to the game. I hope they do, anyway

gonzo-rand19,

Reminds me of Bethesda's storefront for paid mods that they tried out for Skyrim's special edition in 2023. Hopefully they don't pull a bait-and-switch on their players and it's just a platform for free mods.

Skua,

There are a lot of paid mods for the original AC, so I expect that will be part of it. However, I do think that there are two other reasons for the devs to want to host a platform of their own:

  • Being able to remove content ripped from other games, which will help keep them out of trouble
  • Giving users the option to automatically download the mods necessary to join a multiplayer game
AstralPath,

Yeah, but requiring payment for a mod is the modder’s decision for AC. For AC EVO, I’m concerned Kunos is going to make that their decision.

Probably Morrowind.

Properly distinct beast races, freedom to fuck up the world, really rewarding exploration, awesome scenery and concepts, great soundtrack, you can free slaves, and Argonians have never looked better overall.

Second place, probably Red Dead Redemption 2. Every single aspect of that game is outstanding. The pacing, the story, the characters, the combat, the exploration, the horse genitals, the music, the graphics, the massive scale of the world… Just truly a masterpiece of a game, and I think Rockstar will never surpass it.

Honorable mentions for Caves of Qud, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7 (original AND remake/rebirth) and Starflight (mostly played on C64 but Genesis/Megadrive version is far better)

Oh, fuck, and Silent Hill 2, that’s somewhere in the top three. Both original and remake. Fucking exceptional works of art.
