PenguinTD,

did you think of the possibility that even Larian’s low settings still can’t run on series S? Given the amount of assets I saw it’s actually quite possible that vram requirement are pretty high and that’s why PS5 have delay as well so they can figure out ways to consolidate textures used etc. Like they can’t even manage to let me stack rope or water bottle properly in inventory(maybe some asset id not cleaned up during development), so having excessive vram usage is fairly easy/common for content heavy games.

PenguinTD,

Xbox series S have 8GB for game, so while BG3 might consume around 4-5GB on PC, console with unified memory couldn’t afford this. All the other assets(model/animation/audio clips/massive amount of icons) needs to be loaded as well. With split screen, you can have one person tries to go into conversation (that streaming in high res texture/face models, etc) while the other one stay and still render the world with all the things their camera can move around with.

PenguinTD,

See my other reply, 4gb beam is not the same requirement for series S cause consoles use unified memory.(also it only have 8GB for game)

thegamer.com/xbox-series-s-apparently-vram-issues…

PenguinTD,

I don’t know what to say other than maybe you should send Larian your resume and type “I am sure series S can be ported no issue, here is my numbers.” I am sure Larian would love to have simultaneous launch like PS5 and you can cut a really good deal if you can manage to pull that. BUT, you would have to pass the [Persuasion] check though, hope you have high cha to back it up. :)

PenguinTD,

Right, I forgot about this, thanks for correction.

Player stats for the first weekend of Baldur's Gate 3 (store.steampowered.com) angielski

We’ve cooked up some statistics highlighting data from the opening weekend following launch and prepared a handy infographic outlining player choices, actions, deaths, and the like. Some inspiration as we head into our second weekend, if you will.

PenguinTD,

well, if any previous BG experience tell me, sometimes people just roll with situation instead of reload when they try to steal stuff and get busted then forced into fight or die situation, which leads to big fight in town and stick through their decisions. Unless the graph means the actual conversation choices not the end result.

Just want a solid gaming laptop (reddit.com)

My mom likes to play No Man’s Sky and Valheim, but her Asus TUF started freezing on games. RMA found no problems and sent it back to her but it still happens. I ordered a Legion for her but now I see these posts about all Nvidia 40-series laptops freezing up. What’s a gaming mom supposed to do?

PenguinTD,

Repost my comment why gaming laptop is a scam(can’t copy comment link cause the link failed for me):

gaming laptops are pretty much scam anyway, as person “once” fall for such scam.

  • they are really heavy, not really good with travel.
  • they are also power hungry, might be less than your actual tower rig, but significantly more than common "business laptop"
  • the battery won’t last with degradation where you constantly plug it in.( to gain the boosted frequency where you can play games at higher settings/frame rate)
  • your upgrade path is very limited and they won’t have the parts after like 2~3 years.(so anything broken you have to try find it on ebay/amazon/aliexpress)

for portable gaming during travel, your best choice is consoles. So switch, steamdeck, heck, even PS4 slim is better than gaming laptop.(hopefully PS5 pro/slim is made into form for easier box/travel format.)

PenguinTD,

This would be a game that can survive really well if it was ported to PC and supports user server.(to host their collection of dream projects.) Instead, it probably not gonna last for very long following similar treatment to PS3’s little big planet when player count taper out.

PenguinTD,

It’s really good prototyping tool as well for people wants to dip in to game dev. It’s more complex compare to say Mario Maker, but less overwhelming compare to using unity/unreal engine. And you already have all sorts of project asset template you can copy from.

I’d imaging some future gamedev actually started by making dream projects.

PenguinTD,

Dream does have those (pretty extensive) tutorial and “from MM” levels but they are not a bundle experience like LBP.

PenguinTD,

If you have the ps5 director update, they added really good haptic feedback to the game. And there was an Lengend update that add some more stuff(like NG+ and extra perks) and Legend mode to play. The director’s cut content is also quite nice(entire extra smaller island), some puzzles are pretty nice change of pace, you can learn a lot more about the back story of MC.

PenguinTD,

AND, didn’t actually wrapping up the story, for sequel sake.

BG3 is so huge even if it’s only the beginning arc(Larian tends to taper off at the end, lol), I had to “replay” some decision making and see how outcome and the exp net gain and to decide how I proceed.(yep I save scum, don’t hate me I have limited time and want to explore content and choices to my desire outcome. Then my other play through I can be more free form, and I bet there are something I haven’t seen yet from this good guy talk things out approach.)

PenguinTD,

The no lifer, are you not married or have kids to tend to?

But I am glad that you literally can save anywhere(except cutscenes) and continue.

PenguinTD,

I think that was intended for figure out ways to beat some of the time sensitive quest, where the trigger might be you talk to someone, enter an area, etc. If you long rest then the NPC might be dead and change the subplot. With multiplayer I don’t know how they handle long rest(like can one player go long rest while others don’t? or a voting system? etc.) Anyway, I do single player, and I think multiplayer could be fun as well.

Backwards compatibility is the best feature of Xbox, and I don't understand why Sony is so far behind on this

When I got the XSX recently, it was so I can play Starfield when it comes out. That was basically the only reason. I did not realize the extensive backwards compatibility that this thing has. But since getting it, I’ve been playing FF13 trilogy, Fable games, Dragon Age series, Lost Odyssey, etc. Basically all games of note...

PenguinTD, (edited )

Xbox has always doing the x86 architecture(Edit: as corrected by following comment, 360 was not.) so it’s much easier to do BC. For Sony or Nintendo it’s just not worth the effort until the emu is mature that they can just reap the benefit. PS5 can already play almost entire PS4 library, Anything PS2 or before can be emu pretty consistently if you are trying to get it done, then it only left PS3 in a weird place. For PS3, many good games already have a PS4/PS5 remaster games, for non-best sellers you can probably get a cheap ps3 slim with enough storage to play those left out games.(ie, PSN only Puppeteer), OR stream them like you mentioned.

PenguinTD,

Whoops, should have look it up I guess. Sorry for my old and fading memory and thanks for correction.

PenguinTD,

I know people don’t like to create accounts, but Larian seems to be doing fine when I created the vault account(for their prior kickstarter redeem etc.) It doesn’t work with launcher and I contact support to then know they have a new system so they can link steam/twitch/gog for their game specific feature(cross save and twitch integration). So if you ever want to do a session in the future using the twitch integration, you would have to register account to be able to link and use that. It lets viewer check character build/inventory and quest logs, so you can have like 3 viewer like your buddy playing together while you control the choice, your buddy can vote for decision making or direct their character’s combat choice. At worst you can be the only viewer to your stream and just use it as a 2nd screen to have over view of character build or inventory.

example screenshot of twitch integration

https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/c20810ca-d38d-4abe-9bf4-65d42ecb5c94.png

PenguinTD,

Yep I understand those and just saying the obvious reason why one might want to create account, and you can skip or disable launcher entirely as mentioned in this thread.

Cross save( especially between consoles<->PC ) requires linking accounts, Larian disabled it now because of a hotfix bug since PS5 version is not released yet and causing PC player issues.

And I honestly don’t know what kind of threat Twitch has over your privacy on a fresh Larian account. See here is a brief breakdown what they can see:

  • Larian: they now know I have a twitch account, potentially my twitch account’s email address.
  • Twitch: they now know I have BG3, on top of Rocket League and some games I used too stream with a friend. And I am on that garbage tier cause the account is a burner(to sign up stuff that might get spam mails), I never spent a dime on twitch, my user experience data is probably worst since I only go straight to the channel I want to get drops with and never “browse the recommendation”. BG3 I had to go to the game’s page and click on the drop enabled one then afk for 2 hours then I just close it.

So unless there is some secret tech I am not aware of, please do let me know why and what else might be shared that have threat to my personal info/privacy.

PenguinTD,

I only created this after so many post of “I don’t know why Larian would need to put up a launcher and ask for an account”. It’s to show what it actually do and why they needed it. And of course the user can just go with other higher voted comment thread. I think it is a legit reason and usage to ask you to create account and using the feature they provided, and it’s also totally fine that you don’t. (I didn’t created an account when I was checking back and forth with Larian support about the vault account I used to use for their website. I just skip and play EA as always until like 4~5 days later a guy explained this new account situation. I created account like 1 day before launch since I want to get the twitch drop.)

PenguinTD,

I am pretty sure they can’t give information to 3rd party other than the necessary part since they are EU based. And usually when you link account, it’s where you started the linking asking information from the target platform. In this case it’s Larian asking Twitch for auth so that a Twitch user is linked to a Larian account so they can access your viewing time and distribute the drop. (No, you don’t need to link if you are just viewer and not wanting the drop, it’s the streamer needs to the twitch integration like the voting extension, etc. I still have mine disabled. ) It’s usually outlined when you try to link and it will show what’s requested during the linking process.

Maybe I am not really careful from your perspective, but I have like 5 gmail/yahoo/proton email accounts that does different things depending on the information I want to share with the registered site. Didn’t go crazy like some one site per e-mail account, but it’s sufficiently safe over the years. I have never had a data breach/account stolen with my practice so far. (or getting unwanted emails on my banking/work related account.)

As for hiding my identity entirely from internet it’s probably a bit too late to the big corps cause stupid me registered a FB like every “dumb fucks” that did, oh, and google too when I do business with them.

PenguinTD,

Depending which country you lived in, there is legal consequence for getting stuff from unauthorized source, there are a couple ways to work around your data cap.

Legally:

  1. get a external USB3 SSD portable
  2. download using internet not capped, ie. your friend or library, mall, etc(remember to limit the data rate so you blend into ambient youtube/streaming traffic) Referencen: Scrolldown for a chart and use 720p/1080p as your rate limit
  3. hook up back to your PC and move the game to different local SSD folder.

Shady, really not recommended because of point 3:

  1. look up your local law regarding P2P like torrent AND VPN. (well, not every country consider VPN legal.)
  2. Make sure you know how internet works, protect yourself/identity. Pick a good VPN provider, make sure they have their own or use good privacy policy DNS, pick a good torrent client that supports magnet link and encryption and choose “forced” option. (means you don’t download/upload to client that have encryption turned off. ) And set you seeding cap, (I don’t blame you if you choose to not seed cause data cap is real.)
  3. Last but not least, pirated game, like any pirated softwares, are exposing you to malware/virus/randomware, etc. They can hide in any possible files you downloaded cause you don’t know what else they touched this entire thing to work. So sandbox your environment or playing on low overhead VMs might be necessary.

And, when you can, move somewhere that have good ISP that have no data cap.

PenguinTD,

Automation, procedural, visual programming. Or just world building game.

One example: store.steampowered.com/app/92800/SpaceChem/

Pretty much any game from that developer is procedural/automation related.

PenguinTD,

Just spend hours making my first character today and honestly at the end just go with some instinct choice.(not familiar with the 5e rules, haven’t played turned based RPG for a long time. I picked a High Elf/Dragonblood(Blue) Sorcerer focused on lightning spells. The last bit where you can allocate stat points I am at lost so I just go with recommended values. (ie. to go from 14->15 requires 2 points, that really throw me off and your main stat is at 16 “maxed”?? I thought 18 is the highest. Don’t have time to waste on creating a EA character. )

I want to quickly go around, get familiar with the system so when the game released in a week to start over.

PenguinTD,

That’s the only way when I did the character creation. But I am glad that we don’t have to do the dice roll one(which is a cheat engine magnet), so I guess it means in order to gain from 16->17 I would need to subtract more points from other stats just to level up 1 point.(cause that + button didn’t light up when I reduced 2 or 3 points from Wisdom) but it seems that’s very costly trade. A point to point seems more fair and let you create some crazy biased char out of gate.

PenguinTD,

yeah, putting some description on the side or in a “?” button would be nice.

PenguinTD,

It was the “traditional” pipeline and to be honest only good for the “publisher” and some big enough studio, but really aren’t that good for those job hunting game devs(and part of the churn and burn culture, can’t and won’t trying to form union if your turn over is high.)

It is how you get broken games every new release cause the guys that sticks around as supervisor didn’t actually code the previous games or know the actual workflow/pipeline that makes the last game(their last touching code/software might be like 10+ years ago), the middle leads etc might have burned out during last crunch and go to next company after their vacation because fuck this crunch thing I have a family, then then newbies wearing shiny shipped game under their belt move to next company for a better position/pay. So no one or very few actually knows how last time things were done and may or may not have a voice during decision making. Every game, you build the team almost ground up and thus, make similar and more mistakes with ever increasing pressure from schedule and scale.

It’s not an healthy cycle, it is something that creative industry should break away from.

PenguinTD,

Phil Spencer announces Call of Duty deal with PlayStation

“We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.”...

PenguinTD,

Pull a Titanfall to Apex(bad example but you know what I mean) now you don’t really have a CoD franchise. It’s like Battlefield is no longer the Battlefield we remember, just the names. They can just spin up another franchise “from the legendary CoD developers, blah blah…”, BUT it’s not CoD.

PenguinTD,

The common stance against DRM is not the “entitled” part, but to be able to keep playing it even if the companies involved are gone. For games with Denuvo or other DRM there are things like these to consider:

  • the Denuvo company’s server shuts off(whatever reason, blackout, maintenance, etc), your DRM now can’t verify if you have legit copy or not.
  • the game company shuts off, no one left to patch out DRM, your game is in limbo. (cause they have to pay Denuvo to keep the licensing/verification. )
  • your internet went off.(this part depends on game and how often they need to refresh the “valid” token)

With games that have no DRM you have none of the above concerns.

PenguinTD,

Steam has the stance that it will “release” a version where you just get valid license from the game you purchased and downloaded before they shutoff service should it belly up in the end. Epic does not really have the same thing announced anywhere, but I’d assume similar thing.(Note, Epic has more net worth than Valve, they can afford to shut EGS and still provide EOS/license check almost indefinitely even if they stopped selling games on EGS as a platform.) And it’s why steam has that 3rd party DRM tag/block on games.(I wish EGS has this tag or information as well)

Denuvo is quite different however cause:

  • it’s harder to patch out, and the platform do not have access to those part.
  • it adds additional game breaking point( say if you bought a game that has it and also “always online” you need game company, Denuvo, storefront platform and your internet up to play that game.)

I think steam and epic would have bot that buy and patch out the game’s DRM like day 1 after release, they don’t care cause majority of their user won’t bother downloading shady program from a shady website. The publishers however care and thus we have this issue of them “trusting” Denuvo to shield them from piracy during launch window.

I still vote with wallet and generally only buy single player game after they removed Denuvo or just buy those on PSN, cause I trust platform to last longer than Denuvo.

PenguinTD,

Yeah, I do believe some of the Denuvo implementation might be good or improved overtime, BUT, I don’t trust publisher or developer to remove it before they moved on to next project. (see some of the capcom games that was on GFWL example). So I just wait until they removed it or buy on different platform(PSN/Nintendo) that I trust won’t vanishes or stop support down the road. It is very tricky for consumer the more “3rd parties” is involved in your purchase.

PenguinTD,

It’s not, the environment/atmospheric fog/scatter is what makes your eye define scales on earth like environment. The 2022 screenshot has non of that and looks very bad CG vibe.

Multiplayer Co-op games

My friends and I have been exhausting our current library of games and are looking for suggestions. It tends to be pretty hard for us to all meet at the same time. Usually we prefer to do stuff that we can finish in one session on the weekends because one person might have to leave as another person joins. Don’t mind if its...

PenguinTD,

Starship Troopers: Extermination is PvE wave/extraction shooter, from the company that developed Squad. Looks pretty fun but if you are not into that universe nor have enough friends you’d need to rely on other players as well.( basically max 12 players in 3 teams atm.) Warning: early access so if you are not tolerant to EA type of development/update cycle just avoid.

There is a couple other PvE wave/extraction shooter as well, so give them a try.( Just google that term, usually around $30 and could go on sale.)

Rocket League, this one I played since launch and really good game to start before your group all come online and then move on to other games.(since it supports up to 4v4, but usually people only queue 2v2 or 3v3 matches.)
