One of the biggest mistakes I keep seeing devs make is listening to the no-lifers who live on social media. Especially the content whiners: fuck content, make the game work right first.
UI elements and text should be made to be resizeable and customizable wherever possible. I don’t care if it becomes an ugly blocky mess so long as I can read it.
Personally I have excellent vision but I’m colorblind and sometimes I don’t even know what I’m missing lol.
Not sure how a dev can change fast-paced gameplay without seriously altering the nature of the game, but remappable controls should be the norm, and flashing lights have been known to cause issues for so damn long that it’s baffling that they keep doing it.
Unreadable text is something I know a bit about though. I’ve done some accessibility work for web UIs in the past and I can offer some guidance. Text should have good contrast with the background, said background should be static or even one solid color, text should be large and comfortable to read, and use normal fonts rather than dumb or fancy shit.
Roberts is the king of focusing on the wrong shit. Build out the gameplay loops before tacking on dumb shit? Nah let’s put milk and cookies in this bitch.
This is actually one of the changes I like least. I love survival games (one of my favourite games ever is Wurm Online/Wurm Unlimited and it’s hardcore) and play modded Arma so I know how fun this level of immersion can be, but it just feels awful in SC. Stock up on snacks and water, go to warp to mission, get sucked out of the ship. Ok start the recall timer… get the ship back, load it up again, warp out and back, can’t rearm or refuel. Welp junk all my stuff again and relog because nothing but my running costs are persistent (nuking any semblance of immersion). Warp timers clocking 20 minutes? Yep you’re playing SC. Guy hotdrops on you while you’re trying to have fun and blows your ship up before you can even see him coming? Very immersive, especially because you know he got nothing out of it other than the satisfaction that you didn’t get to have fun.
Adding food and health bars while none of this rest of this works right feels like shit.
Same I was an OG kickstarter and after seeing the glacial development of the arena prototype I checked out. Came back for the persistent universe, it was so buggy as to be unplayable, checked out again (and sold my “lifetime insurance” too, made several times what I spent on that).
I just don’t see this going anywhere as long as Chris Roberts keeps focusing on dumb shit and not the core gameplay. It has become evident that Freelancer being as good as it is was a happy accident.
Unreal isn’t by itself capable of the systems that allow Starfield to work the way it does, and would require serious modifications to do so
Can you back that up? Nothing I’ve seen of Starfield indicates it couldn’t be done in UE.
Please check out Angels Fall First and Renegade X, they’re made with Unreal Engine 3 and are not AAA titles, so they can give you a glimpse of what even older versions of UE can do.
Yeah they’re going to do the absolute bare minimum they can to bring in pve players without actually giving them what they want as if this game isn’t dead af
Please the game is already dead. Last time I hopped on (about a year ago?) I got into 3 back-to-back fights with unkillable ships and players due to cheats. Fuck that noise, PvE or nothing.
Epic Game Store is focused so hard on making it good for devs but they have also intentionally neutered it for gamers. Does it even run on Linux yet? We all know that’s the direction Valve is taking things and it’s why Microsoft is starting to panic.
