Bluescluestoothpaste, w Europa Universalis IV and Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You free on Epic Games this week

Am I crazy or is europa universalis just a worse version of crusader kings? Love crusader kings but mever tried EU because it just seems like the same game with less features?

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s the same engine, but the focus is different: CK is about the ruling dynasty, EU is about the country itself. Time period is also different (EU4 goes from 1444 to 1821),

A good example of that is that in EU4 your country can be the junior partner of a personal union, where it needs to fight against its rulers to get independence. You won’t see anything similar in CK3, because you are the ruling dynasty.

Bluescluestoothpaste,

I guess, idk that seems less fun to me lol. And in CK3 you can absolutely be a vassal of a larger kingdom and fight (or negotiate) for your independence.

And in CK3 you can absolutely be a vassal of a larger kingdom and fight (or negotiate) for your independence.

Yes but you can’t be a junior partner of a personal union, since this means that you (the dynasty) would be fighting yourself. On the other hand in EU4 this works fine since you’re the Senate government/country/state itself, not the king or the dynasty. It was just an example on the different focus, mind you.

On EU4 being less fun than CK3: personally I like EU4 better because I care far more about groups in Modern times interacting on a global level than individuals in Mediaeval times interacting on a regional level. And EU4 always involves some sort of “if I did this in real life I’d be a monster” decision, that actually makes me understand a lot of the shit that governments do, such as culturecide or backstabbing/Realpolitik.

But there’s no “right” choice, it’s different strokes for different folks.

This is awesome. To this day Rage is one of my favorite music tracks from any game.

Looks awesome! Glad to see quake getting more love.

NanoooK,

I would love for a remake of Quake III.

whataboutshutup,

To populate the community, maybe, but QuakeLive, original Q3 servers and open alternatives still have people. And what I love about them more than the idea of a remaster is that they aren’t gated by software or hardware. This possible remaster may require a W10-11 and lots of powerful hardware to show all these fancy things you, by default, disable to participate in competitive Quake.

Quake Champions (or how it’s called) is what current gen have instead, while old people don’t care having old Quake 3 Arena things running.

If you already own quake ii on steam this is a free update which is cool.

Altreus,

I just discovered this. Insane! Not that I’m complaining. Wanted to stream it but wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get it … Win!

Yay, muzzle flashes! So, anybody know if old mods will be compatible? Like, can we bring back Transformers Quake 2?

vd1n, w Quake II - Official Trailer (2023)

This is my favorite generation of graphic style. It’s simple and doesn’t get in the way of the game. I swear new games will add trash and random objects in your way just because…

In new games with up to date graphics I end up losing attention on the game and start looking at all the random objects.

Naked_Yoga,

Couldn’t agree more. That’s exactly what I felt like when Quake III came out… “Why is the screen so busy? So much garbage to distract from the game”.

Maybe I’m just old now, but damn I loved Q2.

Also, all of the mods were incredible. Hopefully they will work… I think I have my WOD paks around still.

BluePhoenix01, w Pikmin 4 tops the Japanese charts for the third week in a row

Is this game much better than the demo? I played the demo with my kid and overall the couch coop game with the dog seemed much weaker than Pikmin 3. Maybe it gets better?

DiddyFingers,
@DiddyFingers@lemdro.id avatar

I didn’t play the demo but I assume it’s gameplay very early in the game. My review is that the game starts too slow which is probably what you experienced. Overall it might be worse than Pikmin 3 Deluxe but Pikmin 4 is still a quality game that gets better when you’re around the mid-way point. It’s surprisingly long too (going for all treasure, not speedrunning) and overall I think it’s worth the price.

BluePhoenix01,

Thanks for the update! Right now it seems kid lost interest because of no co-op, but I’m sure that will change with time. It really seems like a solid game.

caballeroAguila,

The game itself is excellent but the coop is pretty weak. Versus battles are a lot of fun and better balanced than Pikmin 3.

BluePhoenix01,

That’s good to know, thank you!

whataboutshutup, w Quake II - Official Trailer (2023)

I loved Q1 and custom maps Machinehead (devs behind new Wolfenstein) added to it, but Q2 is fucking boring. Like, really, besides the cool engine, it was just a slow and unimpressive bullshit. Not a Doom 2 level of making a comeback. What I disliked the most, besides irritating enemies, is backtracking to previous maps. It could’ve been shown as creating a consistent world across maps, but in the end it’s just bad design.

I suggest to those reading it to take Q1 instead. Surprisingly, the remastered version runs on Linux without problems. As do many engines created by fans’ community. It’s just better.

jasondj,

I turned 10 in 1995, and had a decent (for the time) gaming PC. Quake, and Quake 2, were a huge part of my childhood.

I’d agree that Q1 is probably the better game all-in-all, especially for single-player. But for internet multiplayer, Q2 was genre-defining. It was the fast-paced arena FPS by which literally all games were compared until like UT2003.

Murdoc,

Yeah I felt that while Q2 was technically superior, it just lost all the charm that Q1 had, in the enemies, the general ambience, etc. It just seemed so generic to me. Happened to Blood 1 & 2 as well. It’s much like how many movies rely on special effects instead of their story and characters.

explodicle,

And the Q1 soundtrack was done by Trent Reznor, even better than the (still good) Q2 soundtrack.

Elderos, w Take-Two CEO: "We Ought To Be Monetizing 100% Of The Audience" For Mobile Games | GameSpot

Here’s how to monetize 100%% of your playerbase :

Charge a one-time premium to have access to the game forever at a reasonable, region-adjusted price that the average worker can afford, and then fuck off.

SnugZebras, w Quake 2 remaster released, includes Quake 2 64 and new expansion

Fuck yeah! Quake 5 when?

NuPNuA,

Also, get Quake 4 on Xbox back cat on ethe Activison deal is done as they’ll have access to Raven software then.

derin, w Obsidian says Avowed was originally co-op but it just wasn't Obsidian enough
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

Makes sense. I’m glad we’re not getting another multiplayer flop, and instead will get something the devs are more comfortable with making.

iltoroargento,
@iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Agreed. He shouldn’t have to hide, either, but that’s not where we are, apparently.

whataboutshutup,

He only needs to never come back, and for him it’s easy. It’s not yet that stage when they smuggle people back, rn they just clean up cultural landscape from ‘traitors’ to make it 100% sterile. Music scene is already like that.

jayandp,

What a relief. He must’ve dipped as soon as he saw where things were headed in Russia. I wonder where he got asylum? But at the same time I hope I never find out, for his sake.
