Quite a good list, although without any real surprises, except for the cheeky inclusion of a recent fan-made PC port. I’m glad Kerbal Space Program is on it, but a few other personal favorites (and candidates for best game of all time) are absent, like The Talos Principle, BeamNG.drive, NEO Scavenger, World of Goo, Mafia,...
This popped up on my feed yesterday, so I tried it; and again today. Both times I’ve been guessing specific things, like movie titles or species of birds. That hasn’t been working out for me…
The root question of my comment is, why is Zelda’s saying her cake is bad vs Peach’s whose is delicious? I had to assume it’s from some newer iteration of the Zelda franchise that I’m not familiar with since the image of her appears newer than Mario 64. So if someone (me) did play Mario 64 and understood that reference, but doesn’t know the newer Zelda entries then this doesn’t entirely come together for that person (me again).
Then my mind jumped to- assuming that there is some zelda-franchise lore about her making a shitty cake, well, here is another franchise with another female character offering food to a male character with humorous undertones, and that could be used to riff on this meme that OP (or whoever) could make. “Dear Aragorn, Please come to Helm’s Deep. I’ve made a delicious stew for you. Yours truly, Eowyn” etc. Not really a stretch unless you’re artificially limiting yourself to nintendo franchises.
I may have been a bit buzzed when I posted my previous comment but I really don’t think its incoherent enough to be raked over the coals for.
It’s one of the most important game franchises of all time and I’m really glad that I experienced the original when it was new (well, I was a bit late to it, but time moved slower then), and at a time when it had a formative effect on my life.
I was playing Doom 1/2 when I was 10-12 years old, at friends houses who had the right computer OS+specs to run it. I wouldn’t say it was solely responsible for setting me on the path towards other adjacent media like horror movies, metal/punk music, etc but it was definitely an important stepping stone along the way.
That said, I didn’t spend too much time with it compared to other games. I was never very good at it, preferring instead to watch my friends play since they’d had more practice time. Over time we gravitated towards newer games, and my time with Doom was over for a while. (I was disappointed by Doom 3’s gameplay, possibly exacerbated once again by my computer being underpowered for the technical requirements to enjoy it)
Fast forward to 2020 and we’re all in pandemic lockdown. So I fired up my ps4 and went looking for some “comfort games” to play - old stuff that I knew I’d enjoy and wouldn’t break the bank. Sure enough, I found a cheap Doom bundle: Doom 1, 2, 2016, and Eternal. We’re back, baby!
I ended up beating the original gen and their available Unity port WADs (e.g. BTSX) on Ultra Violence, beat 2016 and Eternal on Nightmare (no ultra nightmare for me, though I did put in some honest attempts). And Ultra Violence for the Eternal DLCs also. I still will pop on Eternal for some casual slaughter - I really love the dynamic combat.
Along the way I got interested in some Doomtubers as well- Zero Master to see, well, the master; but most importantly Decino who I still am playing catch-up with trying to get through all his content. My wife sees me watching his vids sometimes and “can’t believe you’re still watching Doom”.
For those who are traveling across the U.S., Terre Haute is on I-70, so you will probably drive through it. There’s not a huge number of reasons to stop (I know, I live here), but I highly recommend this one. It’s just off the interstate in a shopping mall, so it’s very easy to get to....
I’m starting to find that HUDs in games clutter the screen and take away from being fully immersed in the game. I like games that force you to pay attention to what’s going on in the game and not numbers/markers on the edges of the display. What are some of your favorite games to play with no HUD? Here are a few of mine:...
I know you can disable all HUD elements in Doom eternal, but you need to be pretty good at it already to be effective. So not a good candidate for a beginner, but it sure does look good if you can pull it off.
Vice city was never even close to my favorite, and I was really hoping for something else for gta6. That said- I was completely wrong and this looks amazing and I am fuckin excited for it
