jordanlund, do games w Xbox Drops Work on ‘Contraband’ Video Game After Four Years

No, I have just been working in software development for 13 years.

If I spent six years on a project and could not demonstrate core functionality after all that time, I’d be fired too.

I’m not defending anyone, I’m attacking shitty game development.

When the first teaser came out, people went “Well, that’s pretty, but what’s the game?”

Then, reportedly, the whole thing was rebooted in 2021 and we still weren’t able to see what the game mechanic was.

I get it, it LOOKED great, but as a potential player I need to know what the actual fuck I’m doing. What’s the goal? What am I supposed to do? What are the tools I have to do that?

Everwild Devs: 🤷‍♂️

If the suits were screwing around and changing things, we STILL should have seen what the actual game was before and after the changes. We never did. Never will.

That’s not a corporate problem, it’s a development problem.

Compare that to a teaser for a game that actually released:

It shouldn’t take 6 years to demo a basic gameplay loop. If you don’t have a demonstrable gameplay loop after 6 years, yes, that’s a management problem, but it’s also a dev problem.

All we got to saw of Everwild was pretty, but it was never clear what the game actually was and the developer wasn’t clear either.

And apparently Everwild was officially dropped last month too.

Can’t say I’m surprised… after 6 years there was no gameplay footage and the impression was “Well, it’s pretty but what is the actual game?”

jordanlund, do games w Can an American explain to me what's with the grooves on PS1 NTSC cases?
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

I think it was just a design differentiator. Saturn and Sega CD cases looked like oversized CD cases.

The first 100 or so PS1 games in 1995 and 1996 were in the long boxes, then they shifted to the CD cases.

Yeah, at launch in 1995 they were all like that.

It’s a holdover from the original PS1 long boxes:

Fable 2 largely was just as good as one with one added bonus… for me at least.

The cutscenes were all done in engine, with all the same rules that the game has.

So running into the final boss fight, I had run out of healing items, so I ate ALL my food and drank ALL my beer and wine before starting the final fight.

Cut scene starts. Villain starts his villiain monologue as villains do. My character proceeds to puke all over his shoes.

Games are entertainment. When you’re playing a game and you are presented with:

Terrible choice #1
Terrible choice #2
Terrible choice #3
Just godawful choice #1
What the fuck is even this choice? #1

That’s not entertaining. I can get where some people might derive some kind of enjoyment from that, I don’t.

@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The Destiny and Destiny 2 expansions were great… right up until the one that removed 1/2 the game.

The story and engagement. Ultima IV let you talk to literally every NPC in the game, everyone had a name and a job and something to say.

Phantasy Star II was essentially ripped off for Final Fantasy VII to the point where from the minute they introduced Aerith I was like “Well, shit, better not give HER anything I want to keep, she’s dead 1/2 way through the game.” (That was Nei in PSII).

To be clear, those are just the first two off the top of my head, there were other excellent, excellent RPGs.

I really liked the gold box D&D games from SSI - Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades. They don’t hold up well now due to all being turn based RPGs. There is a Steam Collection of ALL of that.

Speaking of, before Fallout, there was Wasteland which has had a modern reboot and sequel. Also a great game that had copy protection built into a story book full of backstory paragraphs.

For JRPGs, it’s hard to go wrong with Suikoden 1 and 2, recently re-released on PS5, drop dead gorgeous RPGs. The Golden Sun games were great too.

I’ve played probably hundreds of RPGs since the start. Disco Elysium isn’t even top 10. It LOOKS great, the writing is dogshit.

The thing that killed it for me was the timer. “xx Days Remaining”.

OMG - Mass Effect 3, yes.

I’d add Fable III. I got it in a “Buy 2, get 1 for $5” sale and I STILL felt ripped off.
