Your favorite video game doesn't need a remake | Digital Trends (www.digitaltrends.com) angielski

Curious about y’alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze...

cbarrick, (edited )

\1. Many retro games were made for CRT TVs at 480p. Updating the graphics stack modern TVs is valuable, even if nothing else is changed.

\2. All of my old consoles only have analog A/V outputs. And my TV only has one analog A/V input. The mess of adapter cables and swapping is annoying. I want the convenience of playing on a system that I already have plugged in.

\3. I don’t even still have some of the consoles that play my favorite classic games, and getting retro hardware is sometimes difficult. Especially things like N64 controllers with good joysticks.

Studios don’t need to do a full blown remake to solve these problems. But I’m also not going to say the Crash and Spyro remakes weren’t welcome. Nintendo’s Virtual Console emulators toe this line pretty well.

But studios should still put in effort to make these classic games more accessible to modern audiences, and if that means a remake, that’s fine with me.

(I’m mostly thinking about the GameCube/PS2 generation and earlier. I don’t see much value in remakes of the Wii/PS3 generation yet.)

cbarrick,

TIL. Thanks for the correction.

cbarrick,

Nintendo has shown they have no interest in making real console hardware

Ah yes, the no true Scotsman argument.

Nintendo doesn’t make hardware to compete with Sony and Microsoft, despite having the best selling console hardware all-time, among the current generation, and among several previous generations.

You don’t have to be a graphical powerhouse to compete with PlayStation and Xbox…

cbarrick,

Wirtual makes great videos.

Glad to see him releasing more to his main channel.

cbarrick,

Cheating is such a hard problem.

Like, this is what leads to invasive client-side anti-cheat. Which also happens to be one of the main blockers for OS portability.

But if you make it so that the server has to constantly validate the game state, you get terrible lag.

You really have to design your game well to deter cheaters. And you have to empower server moderators to ban cheaters. This sorta implies releasing the servers so that communities can run their own instances, because these studios don’t have the resources to handle moderation themselves.

cbarrick,

Ooo. This could mean a macOS port support with Proton and Rosetta 2.

Rosetta 2 only supports 64 bit apps.

The Bluey run memed so hard. After the run, people were shouting “hooray!” after every significant event in other games, e.g. when collecting shines in Super Mario Sunshine.

The Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart 64 runs both had great commentary.

Super Mario 64 Drum% was great. CZR did a 16 star run with a drum kit.

This was my first time seeing Cocoon, and my mind was blown. Orb!

The Super Metroid TAS was awesome.

The Metroid Dread race was nail biting. 2s difference over a 1h50m race.

Go! Go! Hamster Chef. No spoilers. You should watch it.

Edit: add some more stuff above.

cbarrick,

Those Nintendo releases this year we’re bangers:

  • Tears of the Kingdom
  • Super Mario Wonder
  • Pikmin 4
  • Super Mario RPG Remake
  • Metroid Prime Remastered

Plus the DLCs for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came out this year.

Great year for gaming IMO. But yeah, all of these are niche enough that I wouldn’t expect any of them to be top sellers.

On the other hand, I know at least one non-gamer that got a Switch just to play Hogwarts Legacy.

cbarrick,

Tunic was fun. Monkey Ball was pure adrenaline.

Looking forward to Sonic Adventure 2 and Metroid Dread. Oh, and Elden Ring.

cbarrick,

They didn’t even read the headline.

The headline clearly says that Hasbro (owners of WotC/D&D) did layoffs, not Larian Studios (creators of Balder’s Gate 3).

Recommend a game for me to play with my partner angielski

My partner and I occasionally play games together, but they pretty much only play word puzzle games on their own. I’m not very good at word games though, and they don’t have very good spatial skills, so we frequently find ourselves mismatched. We have a switch and a single decent gaming pc, and a pretty old laptop....

cbarrick,

+1 for Portal 2.

OP, the co-op campaign for Portal 2 is a separate story from the single player campaign.

It’s a puzzle game at it’s heart, wrapped in the control scheme of an FPS.

cbarrick,

TTYD is a masterpiece.

The story, I thought, was more compelling than PM. The movement abilities were wonderful. And the graphics upgrade of the GCN is surprisingly a very welcome addition.

Just like PM, it’s a bit of a slow start plot wise.

cbarrick,

The plush stands firmly at 10 ¼ inch length and 4 ¾ inches wide, which is quite a bit below average for your standard Wiglett. It’s held up by a large, sack-like base. Its long, pale shaft will no doubt delight company when you display it for all to see. The store page notes that its body is bendable, so it should stay rigid and erect as you pose it into different configurations. Meanwhile, its soft body invites you to take it into bed with you so you can spend all night together.
