Katana314,

I’m kind of okay with them going whichever way they have creative ideas. Even RE’s action design has been really fun except when they tried to “streamline” it in RE6.

Katana314,

Generally, devs have felt very pressured when given multiple release date goals. By that I mean getting out a playable E3 demo, a “beta”, a demo, an early access for preorders…

It means if, say, the character has always had a clipping issue with their holster but it’s not a priority, the team can focus on important work/bugs first and their QA just kind of acknowledges the weird holster. But anytime they’re releasing, every detail like that has to be trimmed up for however many levels are coming out.

So yeah, I’m in favor of them avoiding any marketing betas if it helps them.

Steam Summer Sale - Top Deals angielski

Initial scrolling of the Steam Summer Sale seems pretty lackluster, but digging through the comments sections in other threads, a few gems have stood out, and it doesn’t appear we have a thread dedicated to this yet, so post what you think are the best deals here!...

Katana314,

As someone who never touched the difficulty, I think my smooth experience came down to considering the encounters more, not dial-mashing the controller. Some fights work a lot better with certain equipment. There’s three kinds of defense suitable for certain attacks: Shield, dodging, and sprinting (a certain enemy has a long gun attack, for instance, that’s good for sprinting).

I think I did struggle a bit at an eventual “rush” segment, but that’s coming up near the end of the game.

Katana314,

I’m trying this game on PSN, but often the dealer is just throwing high numbers at me and I can’t see any economic way I can match them with my own summons. Two bears in a row; what do?

It’s my common issue with Roguelikes. You’re replaying the first level a lot and things don’t really develop much very quickly. I kinda just gave up.

Katana314,

All I really know about this game is the ridiculously stylized animations in its cutscenes and fight moves, which has definitely made me want to try it out.

Katana314,

These days most apps vaguely related to gaming have a DVR function, so that might not be a pressing thing to keep it for. Xbox game bar and soon Steam get that function.

Katana314,

Hopefully the rise of this feature doesn’t mean people accidentally have 8 DVRs running on their gameplay through various gaming apps (not to mention Windows’ Xbox Game Bar does this too)

Katana314,

I’d go one further: The movement can come across as whiney and impossible to please when it echoes the message in a super-blanket way in places it doesn’t make sense, like this one.

It’s like protesting government actions with “All government should be abolished so we can ALL BE FREE”.

Katana314,

Welcome to getting old.

Katana314,

Which, in a way, makes it weird that I’ve felt okay with FFXIV. It’s a very different form of satisfaction to its gameplay.

Katana314,

I’ve pretty much abandoned Xbox over this issue, and I’ve been an apologist for them for a lot of things.

Katana314,

The thing is, if a game releases on Series X without any bonus bells and whistles like (pick one) 4K, 60fps, or ray tracing, it’s kind of failed the move to next gen. If it then cannot scale any of those things back for the Series S, then it’s failed at designing scalability.

The new consoles do not exist to serve programmer inefficiency.

Katana314,

Xbox has a packaged release system designed for that. Since the Series S isn’t really meant to go over 1080p, developers are encouraged to only include smaller versions of textures since anything too detailed would be wasted.

PS5, by contrast, tends to have simplified video settings panels so gamers can prioritize what they want - be that raytracing, 4K, or 60fps. Often, just having the extra power doesn’t necessarily matter if the game is coded against taking advantage of it. (I think Bloodborne is infamous for this - it hasn’t gotten an update, so even on PS5, everyone must play it locked at 30fps).

Katana314,

Similar to how the PS5 had “8K” on the box; it’s only technically capable of that for the sake of videos, but most games tend to go a bit smaller resolution for practical rendering.

Katana314,

I mean…I think yes, at some point a marketing department made that claim, which is unfortunate because that’s ultimately far from reality and most people know it. The claims made of the Series X and PS5 are also usually exaggerated, because most salespeople can get away with prefixing any claim with the words “up to”.

Katana314,

What I want out of romance in games is to have it take you by surprise, which often means it’s not a “romance option”. Some of the best character scenes I’ve seen wrapped some other major plot point into the fact that one person cares a bit too deeply about another, and processes it all very suddenly.

So I’m fine with this removal. All those romance choices in RPGs like Fallout and Skyrim felt ultra shallow to me. Even BG3 just seems like raw wish fulfillment from a horny cast.

Katana314,

There’s a game with pre-rendered backgrounds called Alisa. I always really enjoyed the pre-render look. The excitement of reaching a “cinematic FMV” that moves the story in a PS1 game is very different from standard cutscenes.

Katana314,

Unfortunately that’s one of few games I think I’d need a new GPU for - the demo did not run well.

I’ve been making a list for games like that, and the thing is, it’s not very long, so a new GPU may not be soon.

Katana314,

So instead of DS4Windows4Linux, just DS4Linux. Makes sense.

Katana314,

There’s going to be a bunch of confusion abound in fan discussions, as each of the characters appearing in this game get different names from the fan translation.

Katana314,

I hate to say this, but I doubt that will ever happen.

It’s the ‘Kingdom Hearts’ issue. When you build on a plot thread across multiple games, you devalue a number of entries as a result. People want the modern convenience and superior design of recent releases, but also don’t want to be left out of central information. It’s why it’s hard to get people into the Trails series. To Ace Attorney’s credit, something they’ve done right in their games is avoid spoiling the central culprit of past games in future ones, even going so far as to only reference vague turnouts of past cases.

It really, really doesn’t help that a large number of people consider AJ:AA to be one of the least satisfying games in the series (in part only because they almost all hit a high bar). So if anyone were to skip a game, that might be it.

Katana314,

We’re three replies deep and you haven’t sourced any instances of her actually attacking/harassing people. Gonna call bs here.

Katana314,

If this helps the flame train derail a bit:

Most Source engine game trailers, like Half-Life 2, are “pre-rendered”. If you record a sequence of gameplay as a “demo” (kb-level file that records player movement in a level) then you can record that demo into a video at a much slower rate than the gameplay, capturing every frame; as well as add camera motions to it. There are guides for individuals to do this using the “startmovie” command.

It’s just a logical way to ensure the video is seamlessly presented, especially since framerate optimization comes late in development.

Katana314,

Incoming: Games that look just as good as launch PS4, but with far, far less time spent on optimization.

Katana314,

I think it’s vehement disagreement with the premise, or in other words “We don’t need a PS5 Pro”.

One explanation for the sentiment is that people have already invested a significant chunk of their limited savings into the mammoth PS5 - and want that to provide them some of the best games on offer. They’re worried that after a Pro, they will become second citizen or get downscaled games.

Even if you provide an answer like “But that won’t happen”…they don’t trust that answer. Trust is not common in consumer sentiment right now.

Katana314,

Man I’m still trying to get one part for a gun that only spawns in a certain kind of weekly mission.

I log on, see that mission isn’t available, log off. Such engage, much gameplay.

Katana314,

Yes, but we didn’t have AAAAA gaming standards back then. Do you think they could have made a masterpiece like Skull & Bones in those days?

Katana314,

I guarantee you that would be boring as fuck.

Might as well play with cheats on if you just don’t want to think at all. Thankfully, Doom Eternal has them in the game, you just need to unlock them.

Katana314,

I’ll admit I’ve been in that crowd that believed they saw early efforts like horse armor and Bioware’s infamous pay-to-continue Dragon Age quests, and backed off - resolving they need to shift monetization elsewhere like skins. Seems I was wrong.

You could argue given Starfield’s overall failures, it’s still in the sector of terribly-designed monetization that just gets forgotten by history, much like most mobile games. But, we’re still in the process of writing that history.

Katana314,

Trails in the Sky definitely comes to mind. But if you browse Square Enix’s catalogue, there’s probably plenty that fulfill it. Final Fantasy stands out because it’s a little less tropey.

Katana314,

From what little I know, it’s basically Far Cry 7 with branding. Some people enjoy that, I got tired of the primitive style weapons in FCPrimal.

Katana314,

If they add any patches, then Series S owners won’t be able to install it at all, much less own any other games.

Microsoft announces a disc-less Xbox Series X console in white (www.theverge.com)

The new console option won’t include a disc drive, and will be entirely all-digital. Inside it’s identical to the Xbox Series X, with the same performance for existing Xbox games. This new white model will be available with 1TB of storage later this year, priced at $449.99....

Katana314,
  • For anyone done buying discs, it’s a removed point of failure in the device. The Series S sold well, so if your point is “No one wants a digital console”, then no, you are wrong.
  • People wanted more storage in existing models
  • For a lot of people, the $100 difference between models is a heavy consideration. Anything that can get trimmed out may make them more likely to buy.
Katana314,

It’s be nice for social networks to have features where you can just pattern-match off of idiot dogwhistle comments like Sweet Baby and automatically block users bringing them up. I have to do it for YouTube and thankfully the incel videos have toned down a little, but every once in a while I get a “Men are OPPRESSED”.

Katana314,

A lot of little things in the trailer really felt like it was a pre-animated demo. Things like using thermal vision to see arriving soldiers, the attentive scan mode in the streets, smooth civilian NPC actions (When you think about it, not many game studios make a calm, populous city street actually coded believably).

Maybe that’s too many years going back to the Killzone 2 trailer making me feel paranoid. Just not sure this game has truly exited development hell.

Katana314,

My question is, is he actively recording, or did they just do an audio touch-up on his old lines?

Katana314,

I guess it makes sense to give more rope to Skyrim’s creators, but…it seems more like those creatives have long since moved on.

Katana314,

There’s at least one audiolog in Eternal that suggests he is, against all odds, mostly human. I don’t know if they might be retconning that.

Katana314,

It’d be fun to make it halfway through the movie to reveal Bruce Wayne is a worthless playboy, and have Barry Allen show up and explain to the current Batman “I’m here to correct a mistake. In my timeline, that drunkard over there is Batman.” “I’m sorry, what?”

Katana314,

I can’t believe they got Akuma, from Tekken! /s

In all seriousness, there’s some characters like Yoshimitsu where I get genuinely confused which series he started in, since I usually see him in Soul Calibur.

Katana314,

The Ottoman Empire is suffering a plague of health concerns! With your modern science, you have determined this is because they apply glue to their pizzas. Do you wish to provide assistance by helping them click the squares that contain a motorcycle?

Katana314,

Some things to say back to this:

Most people now have the console they prefer, and it’s lasting them. They don’t necessarily need new consoles. This is true EVEN if that console is a PS4, Xbox One, or Switch. They don’t get everything, but a surprising number of major releases still come to all those destinations.

It’s still nicely convenient to have consoles for less setup and configuration. Some people manage really complex problems for their work and home projects already - a desktop computer may be beyond their tolerance.

Katana314,

I wonder how many tools Unreal has written to convert assets over from Unity setups…

Katana314,

Yes, there are many basic file types that would be easy. That said, 3D models and raw image textures are only a few basic examples of game assets. Many like customized materials or maps just save in an engine-specific format.

Hence the comment suggesting they have tools that at least closely convert what someone has from Unity.

Katana314,

I’ve had an idea for an open world game. Generally, people are “completionist” players that uncover every last rock. But then, they complain that uncovering every rock was boring.

So, the core of the game would revolve around a compelling “ball and chain” that prevents players from being completely free, at least during a first playthrough. You’re required to make steady progress due to story needs.

The idea I have is basically you play as a traveling doctor with a caravan, moving a patient around to new places that might have an herbal cure you need. There’s other adventures to help you, but a time limitation at work as well - just permissive enough to let you enjoy yourself but not to bore yourself through your own grinding choices.

Just the fact that it’s open world means it’ll probably never be made due to budget.

Katana314,

I’m a little surprised it’s that low. I mean, considering their cloud and hardware divisions they’d be getting, shouldn’t Valve pay a bit more than $16m to buy Microsoft?

Katana314,

What’s hard for some is easy for others, and vice versa. There’s definitely an appropriate level of intended challenge to any Soulslike game that makes it satisfying as you gradually overcome difficulties and adversity. Fall below that, for instance by spending 10 hours on the tutorial boss, OR breach that difficulty by never falling below 50% HP, and the experience loses luster.

No matter how much equipment is in it, Dark Souls is still on a pretty set level of difficulty, and it’s too high for a lot of people. Heck, there are other casual games out there that were “ultra hard” for some infrequent gamers I know.

Katana314,

I do not enjoy Soulslikes, but I really liked Tunic. Some things it has going for it:

  • It is extremely nonverbal, but what it does give you is invested in helping you figure out a path to success. By intention, that’s not always obvious. You may need to work out for yourself when to dodge or to block.
  • The atmosphere is bright and cheery, though it has its spooky and atmospheric bits.
  • The camera is top down, so you don’t need to manage the camera while playing.
  • Dying is not very punishing. You lose a bit of currency, which you can retain at the same spot; and that currency isn’t often critical to progress
