Hi, I’m working on a fiction project set in a rebuilding society 100 years out. It’s fairly utopian so people are prioritizing restoring and improving train infrastructure and service pretty significantly. American cities have high speed rail connecting them, and because I’m building this story out of my daydreams, defunct...
I could see repurpose from subway equipment, since it’s already powered and usually set up for short trains. America doesn’t have too many above-ground EMU (electric multiple-unit) models to work with; the 50-year-old Metroliner comes to mind, and some Pennsylvania Railroad predecessors.
The infamous British Rail Pacers were effectively bus bodies with flanged eheels, so that sort of retooling has precedent.
Are you thinking battery, third rail, or cantenary? The latter two are much more infrastructure heavy so you might not see them at the outer edges of a network.
Locomotive hauled trains might be another viable option, one small battery-powered engine (see Norfolk Southern 999) and one or two ancient coaches.
That feels like an interesting political/economic angle-- a territory’s power could be implied by how far its neighbours will extend wires towards it. Getting the train reliably to Boston might be worth wiring all the way and paying for the electricity, but we can roll the dice on batteries to Albany.
Happy new year guys!😀 Just now, it hit midnight here, and it’s officially 2025. I was playing Pennon and Battle, and I realized it’s the last game I played in 2024!! That gave it a different kind of meaning. Now I’m curious, what was the last game you played in 2024?
Vampire’s Dawn 3. I suspect I’m exhausting my opportunities to powerlevel through the content, being that my party reached level 86 and never having seen any zone tagged at a level over 85. I might have to use gasp strategy to finish it.
I wonder if part of the emotional risk is due to the general social stigma attached to porn. It becomes something that has to be explained and justified.
If done to grand excess, deepfakes could crash the market on that, so to speak. Yeah, everyone saw your face on an AI-generated video. They also saw Ruth Bader Ginsburg, their Aunt Matilda, and for good measure, Barry Bonds, and that was just a typical Thursday.
The shock value is burnt through, and “I got deepfaked” ends with a social stigma on the level of “I got in a shouting match with a cashier” or “I stumbled into work an hour late recently.”
Personally, it’s Faith from Farcry 5 for me. Uninteresting dialog that can be summed up to “I was bullied once” and that’s it. Literally every other character is so much more interesting. Jacob gives you a sequence where you run through a gulag which he then uses against you, John tries to kill you and is openly hateful...
I will agree with you. Quake came out and really stretched the hardware of the time.
I can remember timedemos on a 486/80-- a slow machine for the time, but one that would not be absurd for an ordinary home user- and it was pulling less than 1 frame per second, on a machine where Heretic was playable and had a richer, more exciting world. I could see, yes, the enemies are actually made of polygons instead of scaling sprites, but you gave up so much else for it.
I wonder if multiplayer, even more than the “true 3D” is what gave it the sticking power. The lack of story and olive drab level design didn’t matter there as much.
Pulling off a game of pretty vast scope, supporting several very different host platforms, on a multi-year development timeline, and having it thrive in a hypercompetitive market is still an impressive technical achievement.
If all they wanted was to deliver “casino for horny teenage boys”, they could have done far less and still achieved that goal.
