Goronmon,

Without journalism (or just a third-party in general) providing perspectives and communication in some way, you are relying primarily on the information coming directly from the companies themselves.

In this case we see that Sony was willing to fabricate quotes about an interview.

Goronmon,

I guess it’s good to show contempt for your audience…

I don’t know. There have been plenty of times I’ve wondered if people in gaming communities actual enjoy games at all, instead of just talking about how bad they are.

Maybe they are just tapping into that market?

Goronmon,

That’s why my favorite book is Moby Dick. No froo-froo symbolism, just a good, simple tale about a man who hates an animal.

Goronmon,

I’m going to provide a different reply than the others.

Yes, I would consider 8 years a long time to make a game like Helldivers 2.

But all that means is that a studio in a good position to make that type of game would likely be able to do it in a much shorter amount of time.

In this case, we have a studio that was, in hindsight, too small and trying to be too ambitious in the game they were trying to make. So, trying to grow a studio at the same time you are trying to build an overly ambitious piece of software is going to have multiplying affects on how long said project will take.

Goronmon,

We also need people to realize that it’s not sustainable to expect free content while running an ad-blocker.

Goronmon,

I expect the “free” content business model to die off.

I don’t. I expect the vast majority of people will continue to demand free content while simultaneously complaining about the quality of said content.

Goronmon,

Agreed, ads are not the answer. Paying for content is the answer.

But people want their content to be free, while also being angry that their free content contains ads.

Goronmon,

What are you talking about that paid content has no ads?

The article that OP posted is on a site that allows you to pay and from what I can tell doesn’t have any obvious ads that I’ve seen.

But at the end of the day, find a site you like, pay for the content if you can and run an ad-blocker.

Goronmon,

OK? I was giving you an example of “paid content with no ads” that you claimed didn’t exist. What is confusing you?

Goronmon,

Ahh…I see where you got confused.

I was saying that people will run an ad-blocker, but also refuse to pay directly for content.

And then complain that nobody makes good content.

I’m saying that even when you buy expensive products, you still have ads.

Sure, but that’s not really related to the topic. “Why are there ads in the products I pay for?” is a different issue than "Why are there ads in the products I don’t pay for?

Goronmon,

Though Stardew Valley did not invent the farming genre…

Seems to say the exact opposite from what you are claiming?

Goronmon,

The cozy-game genre specifically is a relatively recent category, even if there are plenty of older games that could fit into it.

It definitely isn’t a term you would have seen back when Stardew Valley was released.

And then it says the reason that Hades 2 has resource gathering is because stardew valley influenced it…

That’s not how you should read this section of the article.

Though Stardew Valley did not invent the farming genre – and obviously took a lot of inspiration from Harvest Moon – it certainly triggered the avalanche of similar farming games that followed. On top of that, numerous games have farming and other life sim elements in them now, regardless of genre.

“On top of that” phrasing implies they are making a separate point.

Goronmon,

He is making something else, Haunted Chocolatier.

It looks like he’s effectively using Stardew Valley as a testing ground for features to see how they might work in that game.

So, not a direct sequel, but not a completely unrelated game either.

Goronmon,

All of which just happens to encourage mistakes that can only be fixed using items which are very limited without microtransactions.

This isn’t true.

Goronmon,

Wakestones are limited without microtransactions

But not that limited, you can find the shards and even wakestones from playing the game. Even the MTX alone you can only buy 5 max, which isn’t enough to ever make a difference in the game.

Goronmon,

Bummer that we have to wait on the patch for the Xbox version.

Goronmon,

I’m going to be honest, I have a hard time reading any usage of the word “gem” as something other than sarcasm these days, haha.

Goronmon,

Always interesting to read about some of the specific considerations to go into features that may not seem that complicated at first glance (especially to the layman).

Goronmon,

Looks like the character limit is too low to include all the current reviews.

Goronmon,

Sounds like a accurate sequel to me, haha.

Though the micro transactions seem pretty innocuous to me?

Goronmon,

The appearance change item can be purchased in-game and portcrystals are also findable in-game. So, at best, these items provide a small “headstart” to someone playing the game from scratch.

If anything, the biggest issue is that they are kind of a waste of money.
