I don’t really understand how people make the review threads, but we’re sitting at a 77 on OpenCritic right now. Many were worried about game performance after the recommended specs were released, but it looks like it’s even worse than we expected. It sounds like the game is mostly a solid release except for the...
I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....
I like the part about how it reminds me of Minecraft, but in space and with tools/weapons that never break and the ability to add more inventory slots. (There are less material options for building player housing though, but at least this limitation has led to some very creative community bases.) That, and I always find it rewarding to discover as many of a planet’s plant and animal species as possible to earn those chip things you can learn crafting recipes with, and many of the planets’ terrain looks pretty awesome since while it is all procedural copypasta, there are countless possible combinations of available ores, rock models/colors/usefulness, terrain color, animal appearances/traits, plant products, hazards, etc. You can use all of this to determine which planets near your spawnpoint are useful and which ones are useless, out of millions of possible planets. I also like how after coming back to that game after more than a year, I found that unearthing the buried tech things gives you 4 of that data thing you need to complete all the tech-trees in the early game instead of just 1. And unlike many games, they update all platforms at the same time, which is great since I find the console controls on the Switch edition easier to remember than the PC controls.
But I do wish the planets had more than just one climate and biome so they’d be more realistic and those 2 undiscovered rare polar animals keeping you from earning lots of nanites would be less painful to track down. My current home planet is a swamp world that has Florida-like temperatures even at the poles and on mountains.
One of the big winners of the Unity debacle is the free and open source Godot Engine, which has seen its funding soar to a much more impressive level as Unity basically gave them free advertising.
Long-term I think corporate tech as we know it is screwed. Their explosive growth from the pandemic making everyone terminally online is drying up as more and more people go back to touching grass, so now the bill’s coming due and it’s only a matter of time now before Unreal also does something stupid we can’t even imagine for a quick buck
All the cool companies are doing it, tech companies eating tide pods for fear of death is a based sigma gigachad (and all the other words zoomers use) move now!
Yeah, discs are still a thing for Xbox and PS5, steam decks just download these really big folders for each game’s files to your SD card like our PCs do and the Switch has its tiny cartridges you keep in a little box in your carrying case like previous nintendo handhelds.
This should be illegal, companies should be forced to open-source games (or at least provide the code to people who bought it) if they decide to discontinue it, so people can preserve it on their own....
This is why I always look for cartridge-based Switch ports of games I play, so they’ll be mine long after the online play ceases, they can no longer be legally purchased and my current device reaches the end of its product life. It also helps that game cards last longer than optical discs
But hey, at least they didn’t give it a set end date; from the very start of their “strike” the reddit mods straight up admitted that they couldn’t stay away from their unpaid powertrips and leave their octogenerian mothers’ basements for more than 2 days, and instantly folded at a single empty threat to take away the only thing in their lives that’ll ever give them purpose and make them feel like they wield power over others.
Now it’s down to just the low-effort memes, ”religious people bad”/“reddit good everywhere else bad” circlejerks, unhelpful advice, and edgy 14 year olds who just discovered politics, thinking homophobia and fragile masculinity are “based” and that they’re communist because they hate their home country because something something pronouns, know 2 russian words (both obscenities), have been playing too many WW2-themed games and say comrade every 4 seconds all despite coming from money themselves and supporting a war being waged by a far-right regime.
And they know precisely what’s at stake, and that in any case continuing to use an engine now run by dangerous morons intent on destroying it for a quick buck will not be an option, as we all know Unity will strive for its stated goal of screwing them over like this, be it suddenly and shamelessly like they’re hoping to do or by slowly boiling the frog over many years. And then those devs would lose everything.
The devs can’t afford to fold. The other forum’s powermods folded because they not only could’ve afforded to, but also because upon realizing just how expendable they were, they didn’t want to risk losing the source of their god complex. That, and given that site’s users’ history of bringing feathers to knife fights their failure to enact the change they wanted was hardly surprising.
Nah it’s just a skill issue, Steam Workshop modders have been carrying the franchises of incompetent studios like Bethesda and Paradox for ages and as others here have stated, they’ve already modded this problem away within the first week of this game being on Steam.
Just like how the traffic manager mod for Cities Skylines always updates only days after all the usually pointless shit Paradox keeps doing to their games’ mechanics every other week in those stupid nickel-and-diming “patches”, because they already know the other “sick man of the gaming industry” isn’t smart enough to implement speed limits, make roundabouts act like roundabouts, make cars honor emergency vehicle sirens, set up vehicle restrictions for industrial/maintenance roads or stop virtual vehicles from using only one lane on a 3-lane highway or EMTs from collectively booking it for a tiny downtown road that cycles about 3 ambulances per green when there’s an on-ramp right next to their hospital. There’s a reason why Cities Skylines has such negative reviews on the Amazon order page for its Switch cartridge compared to its Steam page; with Nintendo sending ninjas after anyone who so much as looks at their IPs funny, there is no such opportunity for modders to cover Paradox’s ass there. Steam’s encouragement of crowdsourced, third-party bug fixes is the only reason Paradox is relevant, and also why Bethesda is.

Minecraft Dungeons and Mariokart 8 Deluxe. I was just playing the latter with my mom, and ordered the steering wheel joycon attachments for it which will arrive tomorrow. (Perhaps I could also connect a joycon to my computer and use the Switch wheel to play BeamNG.)
Today I also got a copy of No Mans Sky (basically Space Minecraft) for my switch because I feel it’s better experienced with a hybrid console than with a keyboard and mouse.
Just got No Mans Sky for my Switch, having to update every time I insert the cartridge is a bit annoying but it’s so much better experienced on a console than on a computer.
Half its developers are probably on the sex offenders’ registry and can’t go within 300ft of schools. And now they’ll get to exploit even the kids whose parents won’t get them a computer yet
A patent filed by Nintendo suggests that they’re working on Hall Effect style joysticks for the Switch 2 that would eliminate stick drift almost entirely.
I hear you can get a replacement digital stick on amazon for the existing switch consoles. If the white ones that came with my oled switch ever get that drifting problem, I’m gonna buy one of those replacement stick components and send it and the drifting joycon to a tech repair shop I know of (that guy might have repaired like 200 of those already, pretty much everyone in my area these days owns a Switch). I don’t wanna risk shorting out a $70 controller doing it by myself
Just got an oled switch, I’ve only got one third-party game in my cartridge collection (of four game cards in total) and 2 digital third-party ones I can’t play from my account’s profile but that my mom bought for the family switch and re-downloaded on mine after I had her make a user profile on it. I’ve already bought Minecraft BE on a million different platforms and yet I almost always play java edition instead, and others that are available for Switch run just fine on my gaming PC.
The whole point of Nintendo devices is playing official, Nintendo-made games that can’t be found anywhere else.
Yeah I agree, the Switch family in general are mostly meant to play official games like Zelda, DK and Mario whose older incarnations were also designed for other small consoles that ran on battery power, and not-so-demanding third-party games that can be played without connection to power like Minecraft BE. They’re like a modern DS with a bigger screen that you can connect to a TV and play with detachable controllers, and never pretended to be anything more.
Or how that compares to my mom’s frustration when she got stuck on a really hard Donkey Kong Country level on the family switch’s retro emulator app and died a lot. (She’s really scary when angry, especially if it’s from playing difficult games)

I also just got a Switch OLED, which will arrive by mail in a few days (delayed due to almost being sold out). I’ve also gotten cartridges of Breath of the Wild and Minecraft Dungeons for it so I’m excited.
For those who have pre-ordered it is already here, the rest have to wait a little longer. Starfield is finally here! Have you bought it, why or why not? If you’ve already played it, what do you think of it? We are very curious!...
But Cities Skylines 1 is borderline unplayable outside of Steam because the non-steam players can’t use that one third-party traffic mod on the Steam Workshop that fixes the annoying only-one-lane traffic jams the devs did jack shit about until their recently-released sequel
On the rare occasion that I have the time, I sometimes play Stellaris. (I’ve never played till the end though, I couldn’t sustain attention THAT long, especially given all the BS they keep doing to the game mechanics so often it makes strategizing impossible in the long run unless you dedicate your life to the game.)
