One Youtuber that covers a lot of what you are talking about is JarekTheGamingDragon. Someone else mentioned Trepang2 for example and this was his review.

Sleeping Dogs was a lot of fun. Kind of like Grand Theft Auto but more serious and a focus on martial arts.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

All the article is trying to say is Cyberpunk took development expenses to another level.

He may have been jesting with the interviewer, but it’s not far from being the truth. It was revealed that year that Cyberpunk 2077 was a drastically expensive game to both develop and fix. It cost CD Projekt a whopping $125 million to fix the game and pump it with new content after it was released – the firm spent $21 million alone in marketing for the Phantom Liberty expansion. That’s more than some developers spend on an entire game.

By the time CD Projekt was ready to move away from Cyberpunk 2077, almost half a billion dollars had been invested in the game. If budget alone is enough to make a game ‘AAAAA’, CDP came close to that designation with Cyberpunk 2077.

I’m honestly surprised they’re still updating Java edition

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I know. I’ve seen a lot of videos on the differences between Java and Bedrock, how Bedrock came to be, modding on Java like Feed The Beast, and multiplayer servers like 2BT2 (for those that don’t know FitMC has some good vidoes on 2B2T; it’s a neat rabbit hole to go down if you want to kill sometime).

What I am saying is I am surprised that Microsoft is still updating Java when there’s so much money to be made nickle and diming players in Bedrock edition. Like paying for skins for example. It would definitely piss off a lot of the player base but I don’t know if it would cause them to lose money in the long run. I imagine a lot of casual players are content using Bedrock and unaware of why Java is important.

@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Does it have official support though?

Edit: To be clear this comment was referencing what OP’s post was likely trying to convey. Of course Minecraft has been moddable on Java for years but as the Minecraft help page says it isn’t officially supported. I know about data packs and their support/limitations.

@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah what I was asking about is official support in Java; that’s probably what OP is referencing. I looked it up and the answer is no.

It’s a bit like saying Skyrim didn’t have mod support in 2011 when it released until 2017 when Creation Club content was added. Of course there were mods in 2011 but not officially supported ones.

I feel like Minecraft surges in popularity pretty regularly. As long as people continue streaming it and posting videos of it I think that’ll remain the same. I don’t know if someone who is looking for a taste of what they saw online will know the limitations of Bedrock. They might just pick it up because it’s available on whatever platform they use.

I suppose killing Java might put a stop to the content that is being created with Minecraft and that might cause it lose its relevance but I don’t know if a majority of content creators are using Java or Bedrock.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Achievement Hunter is what made me wonder. I knew they used Java for Galacticraft but I thought they used Bedrock for pretty much everything else.

I also don’t know how popular streaming Bedrock multiplayer servers is. I think they are called Realms.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

When did he do that? I’m real out of the loop when it comes to modding Minecraft

CorrodedCranium, (edited )
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I never thought adding a paywall was necessary. I was more thinking along the lines of a game being made easier to mod and its developers embracing the idea of modding like you kind of mentioned. This could be done by releasing tools to make it easier like Cities: Skylines 2’s recently released editor and Hatred adding Workshop support. I don’t know if official mod support Java would entail something like a built in mod manager, updates to improve modding capabilities, or some kind of universal package for mod files.

This doesn’t need to be done through a service that the developer has any control over. SimCity 2000 had a Build Architect Tool players could use in the mid 90s and sites like ModDB and the Nexus exist.

I’m not sure what the latter is called, but I’m quite sure there’d be a massive uproar if MS/MJ did that for java edition. I know I’d never play the game again, that’s for sure.

There will always be the option of raw dogging files into the game directory or developing external tools like people did with Mass Effect.

Someone else linked one related modding but there are several other Minecraft communities that are more niche. There’s one specifically for seeds for example.

Do you mind talking a bit more about the Morrowind multiplayer? I’d be interested to hear how it works and your experience

CorrodedCranium,

What do you like about Control? That’s one game I’ve been thinking about revisiting

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

One thing I’ve gotten into doing is instead of starting a new game I just run off in some random direction for an hour. It’s neat to stumble across things you built years ago

I definitely get what you mean

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Do you play any other Doom WADs?

CorrodedCranium,

I’ve been playing The Witcher 2 but I feel like I’m kind of forcing myself. I got distracted and started playing Returnal and resumed working on my big hole in Minecraft

I think my favorite was Lego Island Xtreme Stunts when I was a kid. I know there’s a PS2 version and I am wondering how different it is compared to the PC version.

I also played Lego Island 2: The Brickster’s Revenge on my GBA. It was really restricted on what you could do. Its big focus was on mini games if I remember correctly.

For those interested MattKC has been decompiling the original Lego Island which could lead to an open source engine recreation being developed in the future.

As for Control 2 and project Condor, both were announced back in November 2022. They are, however, likely still some significant way off, with Control 2 confirmed to still be in the the “proof-of-concept” stage last October

Sounds like we are still a ways out from Control 2.

While I did like the gameplay and environment of Control I really don’t think the story was all that memorable. I don’t know how they would out do the original.

Alpha Protocol. A spy RPG released by Obsidian. I’ve only really gotten past the tutorial so far and I have no idea if I’m going to enjoy it. It uses the Fallout 4/LA Noire style dialogue system where you don’t really know what your character is going to say that I really hate.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

So far it’s been pretty good. I find the patrols NPCs do a little odd. Kind of jerky and I can never really tell if they are going to see me. There haven’t been a lot of super unexpected outbursts from the protagonist thankfully so I feel like you might be right. Everything has been pretty subtle. I’m not choosing the Aggressive option and just having the protagonist responding with “Fuck you”.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I feel similar going back to the PS3/Xbox 360 era when so many games had that piss/shit filter. Ex. Grand Theft Auto 4 and Resident Evil 5

The article is leading me to think we’re going to get another The Outer Worlds experience where your actions don’t really have an affect on the world until the very end.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I don’t know. When I was helping factions it only felt noticeable when they showed up to help at the end.

I haven’t replayed it because it felt like there wouldn’t be a lot of deviation between paths I choose to take.

It’s kind of like Dishonored’s chaos level system that can result in additional enemies and a different ending. It makes it feel like more of an adventure game than an RPG.

This is all obviously subjective but when people were hyping it up to have Fallout New Vegas levels of choice I felt let down.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I think it’s a matter of expectations. When people were referring to The Outer Worlds as “Fallout but in space” in the lead up to the games release I think that set the bar quiet high and don’t feel as if some of the themes you’d see in Fallout were there or at least weren’t presented in a similar way.

I don’t think many people hate the game. I spent over 50 hours playing it and beat the DLCs. I just don’t think it’s a game that I would go out of my way to recommend.

It’s like people hate it because it’s not the massive open world of fallout new Vegas, but people tend to not realize or I guess forget, there was a stupid amount of just walking from point a to point b in that game only to get to a super linear quest line. The outer worlds does a great job of simplifying the world in a meaningful way.

It’s been about three years since I played The Outer Worlds but I feel I feel like I recall the quests being broken up into regional chunks. There weren’t a ton of loading screens which was nice but I felt like it cut back on the amount of depth the world had.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I really dislike the X is the Y killer angle. It’s such clickbait and immediately puts fans on the Y side on the defensive. It’s helping no one.

Unless it’s an indie dev I don’t even care what else a developer has produced previously. With such large teams there’s too many cooks in the kitchen and it only takes one of them to sour the game.

Get the PS5 now or wait for the pro?

I’m looking to get back into console gaming. PlayStation has been around for most of my life and I always played on that console. I am conflicted if I should wait for the PS5 PRO or just go get the PS5 now because what would be the net benefit of waiting versus getting a console now. What do you all think about this conundrum?...

CorrodedCranium, (edited )
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I think it depends on if there are games exclusive to one versus the other that you’re interested in.

By that logic also if you own a PS4 because some games still crossover

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I’m surprised they didn’t see this coming. A lot of people had high expectations because of the impact the first game had and if it wasn’t better in every way there was bound to be some negative feedback.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Gamers in general are just very entitled, and very unforgiving

Didn’t the sequel have some pretty large problems on launch?

CorrodedCranium, (edited )
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Isn’t that just a more extreme version of negative feedback?

The post the article is talking about does mention toxicity in the community and hints at it being directed at the devs but how much of that is people debating and talking about gripes they have with the game versus crude personal attacks?

All I was saying is this game received a lot of attention and hype so I felt like this was kind of an inevitably. They were never going to please everyone.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I wonder how much of the negative feedback is The Sims style issues where a lot of content is either going to be patched in later or come in as DLC but in the meantime something just feels like it’s missing.

A slightly separate issue than just bugs but then again didn’t some traffic issues in the original game get fixed that way?

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

There’s always going to be a small group of people who take things too far once a game gets popular enough. I don’t think it’s right but I’d say it’s to be expected

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I get it but I feel like a vast majority of the criticism they are getting doesn’t fall under the extreme category or into bullying.

Some people might be making Gmanlives-style quips in the Steam reviews that might make themselves feel good but I think a majority of it’s just general disappointment and people expressing it.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Yeah I think that goes with people voicing their disappointment. It’s like with Fallout 76 a lot of the community was split on it. Even now defending it can lead to dog piling.

People are debating in the community. It might not make for a super fun place to be that’s kind of just the reality of it for now.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Try to remember there’s a distinction between reasoned debate, like what you and I are doing right now, and trolling. Which I’m sure we could both switch to if we felt like it.

Criticism, for it to be useful, does have certain delivery requirements. The critic, in order to not be shit, has a certain responsibility to their criticism.

I don’t think the bar is that high or that a majority of the negative discussion falls under bullying. It’s a lot of people disappointed in a game and voicing their frustration.

Saying a game sucks and has no redeeming qualities and encouraging them to get a refund when they ask for any kind of tech support for it on Reddit is kind of unoriginal and lazy but I don’t think that classifies as bullying.

For example this is from Reddit about someone liking the game. You get good responses like this

Subjectively or objectively?

Objectively it’s far from what they’ve promised, full of bugs and hardly optimized.

It’s also a promising platform that could evolve into an objectively amazing game somewhere down the road.

If you — subjectively — enjoy it in its current state that’s great!

But you do get some less constructive comments like

I bought CS2 and it’s utter shit.

But now I feel like a sucker to open CS1 again.

End result: I gave up on Cities Skyline completely. May fall out of habit of playing it at all.

CS2 could, but not certainly, be the death of the franchise if more people act like me

And

I could name a hundred things off the top of my head that could be better in this game. I still have a hundred hours though

Even sorting by controversial on Reddit it’s really not that bad. It sounds like there are some posts being removed but a majority of it is people voicing their frustration with modding support taking so long to implement and the game feeling like it’s lacking in some department.

Does it have to go full gamergate for you think its a problematic situation or something?

I feel like were going in circles here. I already acknowledged that there are going to be people that take it to the extreme and that’s wrong but it’s a very percentage of people.

Now, gamers are a tough bunch. If a community is losing community, I think we can make some inferences about whats going on, and it’s probably not a bunch of well-reasoned and nuanced debate.

I disagree. You see communities around games slow down all the time when new games, updates, and DLC steal the spotlight. A lot of the time you just need to wait for things to shift in a different direction. In the meantime people are going to sporadically talk about how they feel about the game and debate updates that come out.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Even then can you think of some examples from their forum? Going to it myself is feeding my error messages likely due to my VPN or browser configuration

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I really don’t care one way or the other. I think AI being used is an inevitability. I think it would only really be relevant if Microsoft had a policy against AI being used in games for things like asset generation for example.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I’m not defending Microsoft. They’re a soulless corporation releasing an ad around a holiday where a lot of people have time off and recently received gift cards and spending cash. I don’t think them paying for an artist one time when they hope to use AI for a majority of their throwaway adverts really matters.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

The article I linked with the post was about that. I still can’t think of a lot of other examples though

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Kind of related but it’s playable using ScummVM if you want to play on it on your phone, 3DS, Vita, PSP, and a few other platforms.

Argonaut Games’ cult classic survival horror FPS Alien Resurrection has been hiding a secret for 23 years: it contains a cheat code that lets you play backup disks on PS1 without having to mod the hardware at all.
