I’ll write something here later probably. In the meantime, hi to whoever’s reading this I hope you get a chance to enjoy something kind today :)

Games you really want to play, but can't or won't?

Diablo IV, for me. I love the Diablo series and just a bit ago, I sank 2 hours down to get my necromancer character up and set in Diablo II Resurrection. I have Diablo III and its expansion too, but they're online only and I almost can't be bothered to go through that. I've beaten it a long time ago....

Ori and the Blind Forest, and other metroidvania/pseudo-soulslikes with pretty art and stories.

I just don’t have the patience to “git gud” anymore.

Day 559 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

Today’s game is Cult of the Lamb. I’d like to apologize to this game, as when i first saw it, I wrote it off as just being a “Here’s a cute thing + satanism” kind of game. I don’t mean it as a bad thing or some sort of jab to say “this thing bad”, but it is not my personal taste. I decided to give it a try though...

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Say goodbye to whatever in-game morals you think you have. CotL is wildly addicting in an amusing way.

You’re pretty much right on the money that the lamb is kind of a “blank slate” for a player self-insert. Freedom of choice (for you, not your followers, ofc) is the name of the game.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Point no. 2 is why I couldn’t get through Witcher 1. There’s only so many times I can fight 3-5 sewer monsters to get enough XP to not die in chapter…4? 5?

Switch 2 Sales Reportedly Struggled Over The Christmas Period (www.nintendolife.com)

I like how this article does not talk about the anti consumer practices engaged in by Nintendo, that might push some customers away from their consoles. /s Nintendo can disable your Switch 2 for piracy in the U.S., but not in Europe, as confirmed by its EULA. There is already a switch in my household, but the price along with...

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Same. I was able to get like 10 long-wishlisted games for ~$100 with the Steam Winter Sale, too. Nintendo would never.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar
  • Just Crow Things
  • PowerWash Simulator
  • Wanderstop
  • Thank Goodness You’re Here!
  • Night in the Woods
  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure
  • Cinnabunny
  • Unbox the Room
  • April Grove

and I guess no. 10 was a copy of Coral Island I was gifted, oops lol

At some point I still want LAN Party Adventures, and The Lonesome Guild but those will wait until the next sale. In the meantime I have plenty to sink my teeth (thumbs?) into!

Broadfern,

Privatize the profits, socialize the losses.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

I’d add Moonlighter 2 in there as well.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Depends what you’re looking for.

Adventure/RPGs: Oblivion remaster and Avowed both came out with pretty good ratings overall. Ghost of Tsushima was also a big hit last year, came out in May 2024.

Multiplayer indies had a good year as well - Repo, Peak, and Escape from Duckov have been popular.

Cozy/niche games: Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Deltarune, Slime Rancher 2.

Niche games I’ve personally enjoyed and/or want to get: Mudborne, Cryptmaster, Dungeons of Hinterberg, LAN Party Adventures, The Lonesome Guild, and Little Rocket Lab.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

If you haven’t already bought a switch 2, just get a Steam Deck if you want another handheld.

Valve also won’t remotely brick your entire device if they think you got an unlicensed cartridge.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Bind one of the back buttons to tilde (~) and then pull up your steam keyboard, if you’re talking about console cheats (like in Skyrim or Fallout).

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Unskippable cutscenes absolutely need to die. Even on the first playthrough - give me the info I need in a notes section or something, but do not waste my limited time on this coil with slow “exposition.”

I usually quit those when they get too grating and move on, but it’s frustrating nonetheless.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Lack of accessibility options, not unlike you.

Most games are better about this now, but subtitles, difficulty options, and the ability to turn off flashing lights are critical to the point I can’t play for long, sometimes at all without them.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

God forbid they just shut down the chat function??? Ffs

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Got back into Stardew Valley, this time with ~300 mods and a bunch of expansions and no visible end to the timesink yet.

And… all the Nintendo Adults have made it clear over the decades that “Corporations aren’t your friends. Except for the one with Mario.

I must be in a hell of a bubble but the stereotypes I’m familiar with are as follows:

  1. “Nobody hates Nintendo more than Nintendo fans” and
  2. “Nobody hates Nintendo fans more than Nintendo.”

They make it impossible to enjoy damn near any of their older games without piracy. Their hardware is objectively worse performing than other consoles of the time. And they price gouge like a mfer.

I still play my Switch and my old 3DS but I’m doing my damnedest not to give them another cent directly if I can help it.

ROG Xbox Ally runs better on Linux than the Windows it ships with — new test shows up to 32% higher FPS, with more stable framerates and quicker sleep resume times (www.tomshardware.com)

In a not-so-scientific benchmark conducted by YouTuber Cyber Dopamine, the Rog Xbox Ally managed to perform better without Windows, the operating system it ships with out of the box. Cyber installed Bazzite, a popular Linux distro for handhelds built specifically to offer that console-esque, seamless experience. Visually,...

All positive publicity is good, the more people outside our little niche bubble are exposed to it the better.

Killing Windows influence in gaming wherever possible is an improvement.

Isn’t part of the Kickstarter ToS that you understand there’s a chance the project won’t come to fruition?

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Nah I’m not gonna pay $80 for unoptimized copy-paste spyware my man thanks

The people I’ve known who speak like this are decidedly not furries.

This reads like terminally online technically-conservative-but-not-full-nazi edgelord. The type who hates the government and is very pro 2A/anti-welfare but gets an itchy finger at KKK rhetoric and would have joined the Union in the (first) Civil War. Also strangely typically in high favor of bodily autonomy because “that’s not my or the government’s fucking business.”

It’s a weird middle ground but they do exist. Typically under 30 or over 50, relatively asocial white men.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Puritanism comes down to “happiness is bad.“

Not just sex; dancing, music, poetry, novels, games, decorations. Anything which takes joy in life and expression is forbidden.

Suffering while alive is seen as the proper punishment for being born human - seeing people and nature as beautiful and divine is legitimately blasphemy to these people.

[Spoiler] Day 404 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing (The Last of Us Part 2)

If i had more time i would have found a way to work a 404 joke into today, but i couldn’t come up with anything good that wouldn’t just be me suddenly switching gears to another game. Anyways, so it’s some more of The Last of Us Part 2. The main screenshot for today i actually only picked because damn, does it look really...

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

“404: witty joke not found” (I can delete this part of the comment afterward if you’d like)

Holy moly I didn’t realize the visual fidelity on this game. Thank you for sharing and keeping up on this project!

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Actually released in 2025?

Mudborne. I had to stop since the text was too small for me but I pushed through it for a couple weeks at least.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

The weird part is apparently Canada got hit by this as well.

I’d be curious what those “market conditions” are that screw over our northern neighbors too 🤔

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

It’s going to come down to anything with even a whisper of LGBTQ+/minority/disability/etc representation, just like with books.

They start with the “egregious” content (not that it’s necessarily right to remove that either), then narrow it down until it shapes up into hegemonic conformity and systemic oppression via media (there’s a term for it, kind of like stochastic violence but not quite that I can’t remember atm).

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Snake would also fall under that category

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

The compilation was released on September 18, 2020, and was available until March 31, 2021, when it was discontinued and removed from the Nintendo eShop.

Looks like it was on the eshop for a whopping six months. I think that makes it worse to be honest.

Fully agree. You as a consumer aren’t obligated to remember all of their slights in detail, though. That’s why we have Wikipedia 😎

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

TBF, even if they’re a shit company to their consumers it’s kind of funny for them to point out they still make boatloads of money while keeping employees since it makes others look bad.

“Efficiency” is smoke-blowing bull for the sake of putting a few more pennies in shareholder stocks. Stable profits are far more sustainable and better for the real economy (where real people spend real money) than infinite growth since having a regular paycheck allows people to continue buying things.

Open world RPGs need a standard feature whereby you can transfer your current clothing stats to any other equivalent piece of clothing in your inventory

I’m kinda sick of walking around Witcher 3’s world looking like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. I’m supposed to be a gruff and grizzled monster hunter, living in a filthy world and at the bottom of the social hierarchy, dishing out menacing threats in a monotone voice, yet I’m dressed in pristine baby blue prince pyjamas...

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

This is pure poetry. Brought a very literal tear to my eye.

Now that I can breathe again, yes absolutely this should 110% be standard QoL for next-gen RPGs. Hopefully.

I finished The Outer Worlds looking like a psycho in mismatched mascot hats and boots, rapid-switching in my inventory depending on the skill buff I needed for each dialogue check.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

God fucking forbid they make ES6

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

I hope you’re right and I hope it isn’t Starfield with magic.

Thank you

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Not who you asked, but I’m in the middle of a playthrough right now and yes that’s exactly it. The deck building doesn’t feel grindy like Pokémon though.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

“You’ve had the best, now try the rest.”

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

If I could afford to pirate games, it wouldn’t be indie games.

Indie devs are usually small and made up of equally(ish) poor people just trying to make a living. That money puts food on their table and keeps the studio running.

That said, I know some devs look at it as free advertising. Doesn’t make it great, but it’s a different perspective at least.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

The real reason I take my meds to be honest

Everybody 300 hours into Skyrim: what’s a main story?

Dharkstare, (edited ) to Gaming

I tried to mod Cyberpunk 2077 and it was not a smooth experience. I first tried using Vortex in Bottles but it wouldn't run. I then tried to use ProtonUp-QT but couldn't figure out exactly what to do. I discovered that there's a new NNM AppImage that's early in development that works with Cyberpunk.

I'll have to try again in the future and figure out how ProtonUp-QT, ProtonTricks, Steam Tinker Launcher, etc.

@games

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

That’s probably the way to go. I’ve tried using .dll-based mods with Proton/Winetricks/etc to little success so having a VM is smart if you’re able.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Slime Rancher, though most of my library is indie so I could list like ten others.

I won’t list out the “big” famous ones since those get covered anyway (Stardew, Undertale etc.)

There are plenty I love that have a little less polish but charm their way through, like Calico and Yonder. I also just played through Tunic and quite enjoyed it.

A solid indie publisher is Reddeer games - about half my switch titles are by them. Finji is another.

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Excuse you that is my emotional support Switch. It helps me feel better knowing I have the option to play if shit goes sideways, and tbf it has a couple times and those games came in handy to pass the time.

It’s like part of having a Swiss army knife or a first aid kit; if the day goes well you don’t need it but it helps way more if you have it on hand ¯*(ツ)*/¯

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Theoretically you can spin up a used thinkpad from a yard sale and run steam. Nintendo doesn’t (legally) run on anything that’s not Nintendo branded ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

Telling myself I’m saving money by going through my backlog and doing second/third playthroughs:

Broadfern,
@Broadfern@lemmy.world avatar

There’s very little in the article to indicate imminent demise. A few valid complaints, yes.

Games should be supported across all platforms but the article did not mention a viable alternative for Mac based gaming.

Extraneous launchers are an issue, but I’m not sure what Steam could do for that when they’re the storefront, not the developer.

The article also expresses a concern for continued dominance as a platform so it goes against the title as well.
