Maybe it's time for Kbin and Mbin to be a single project, in the end they are the same thing, just that Mbin has more people actively working on it, so they are faster with pull requests. There is no big philosophical problem, just a maintenance one.

Seraph,
@Seraph@kbin.social avatar

This would be great! Can you merge after a fork?

There's also the issue if Ernest isn't around who gives others willing to be on the dev team permissions so they can assist.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

many forks have merged improvements from the other project in both directions when the licenses allow for it.

    I haven't dug into it, but I think that activity is just because it's forked?

    Aatube, (edited )
    @Aatube@kbin.social avatar

    Are you sure that's not just because mbin was syncing changes from kbin? https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/231 seems to be the only commit ernest has actually made to mbin directly

    HarkMahlberg, (edited ) w Is Ernest still here?
    @HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

    The nature of software development and internet communities has always been transient - frameworks and projects and websites have all come and gone. Despite how unlikely it may seem, even Facebook is not immune to becoming dust in the wind someday. God knows I've started my fair share of hobby projects and left them behind in states ranging from broken to buggy, so I should be the last person to throw stones. I know how it feels to just hit a complete motivational brick wall, or to have so many other things come up in life that my little project is the last thing on my mind.

    For as long as I can remember, from the days of PHP bulletin boards to Reddit to kbin, I've never had only a single profile. So I think it's not a bad idea to prepare for the possibility that kbin doesn't last forever - literally nothing does. Nor do I think that's a foregone conclusion! But even if Ernest has moved on, or he's tied down by other matters, I think what he built is inspiring. I legitimately believe that kbin is cool tech, far far cooler than Bitcoin or VR or AI. Maybe someone else spins up a kbin instance, or mbin becomes the new de facto standard, but I don't mind running this account for as long kbin.social sticks around... no matter how many 503's I see lol.

    I recognize each and every other commenter in this thread, y'all are prolific contributors. So if you are leaving, at least link your new profile in your bio.

    facebook's already past it's peak and declining. meta's lucky they own instagram because that's actually popular

    QualifiedKitten,

    Oh, the irony! I'm trying to upvote your comment, but keep getting an error.

    I signed up here and Lemmy.world (same username), at roughly the same time, and have mostly used this account. Only in the past few days have I been leaning on lemmy.world, and giving some thoughts as to where my new backup might be. I really do appreciate the added benefits of 3rd party apps, but I'm definitely going to keep checking in here, and hoping I'll be back to using this account (almost) exclusively again soon. I don't even use the microblogging side of things here, but I've really enjoyed the vibes of Ernest and the local community.

    FarraigePlaisteach, w Federation Delays

    I’ve been waiting for my account deletion request to be accepted for a while now. Maybe a few weeks.

    I like Kbin in theory, but the spam is too distracting for me. I’m not in a position to volunteer either.

    GeekFTW,
    @GeekFTW@kbin.social avatar

    Hell I've had magazine deletion requests sitting around for months, since before ernest disappeared lol.

    I run @SquaredCircle here and with all this never-ending breaking I've been spending the last 3 days testing out Federation between 4-5 other lemmy and mbin instances trying to find a place to move my account and the community as a whole.

    bluGill, w I Still Like Kbin.social

    One day is annoying, but bearable. much longer and I won't have a choice but switch. I like kbin, but the mbin team says some things that I find concerning about kbin - I wish the two could patch up their differences.

    FfaerieOxide,
    @FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

    I couldn't find any decent k/m bin instances when I was looking during the most recent outage.

    olorin99,
    @olorin99@kbin.earth avatar

    I'm curious what counts as a decent instance for you?

    FfaerieOxide,
    @FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

    I'm curious what counts as a decent instance for you?

    Open signups, non-US servers, GDPR-compliant, file uploads, local magazines among other attributes.

    Also if you visit an instance and it appears that whoever runs it never even conceived you might not be viewing it from a phone, that's a turn off.

    wagesj45,
    @wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

    the mbin team says some things that I find concerning about kbin

    What are they saying?

    bluGill,

    kbin doesn't accept contributions. It is a one person project despit appearing to be community driven.

    I don't know what is true but that is a concerning accusation.

    Pamasich,

    The project definitely accepts contributions, the mbin devs have contributed to kbin before and a few weeks ago a minor code change was committed and merged by someone other than ernest.

    As I understand it, the issue is that people with merge permissions other than ernest are only allowed to merge their own pull requests, not those of third parties, which require a review from ernest.
    (At least that's what I've seen explained before, though I haven't seen any proof of it so I don't fully know if it's real.)

    This means a majority of contributors can't get their pull requests merged when ernest is gone. Which is why they went and made mbin when he was gone for months last time.

    originalucifer, w So blimey - what happened there?
    @originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

    its not the outage that bothers me, its the complete lack of communication.

    stopthatgirl7,
    !deleted7120 avatar

    Exactly this. There’s no way to know what’s going on when kbin goes down. It would be nice if there was a kbin Mastodon account or something people could check for information when the site is down.

    bridge_too_close, w So… what's going on?
    @bridge_too_close@kbin.social avatar

    I understand the desire to keep kbin a solo project in order to maintain control over it, but if this is going to see any success in the long term, then there needs to be a team. I like kbin over lemmy for the interface and mocroblog integration, but the spam and lack of updates are taking its toll. At the very least, there needs to be another admin or two to look after things whenever Ernest isn't around.

    fisco, w Anyway to get this spammer's account banned?

    JohnWorks, w Another Interstellar update: new icon, microblogging support, editing/deleting capabilities, youtube embedding, and more

    Has the kbin API been released? I didn’t know there was 3rd party apps for kbin yet.

    jwr1,
    @jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

    The kbin api has been out for a while, but there are some instances that still don't support it yet, including kbin.social. If you go to the login screen on the app, there's a list of recommended kbin instances that support both the API and external logins.

    JohnWorks,

    Ah gotcha guess I was thinking of kbin social then

    8BitFriendly,
    @8BitFriendly@kbin.social avatar

    @ernest When can we expect kbin.social to support the API and external logins?

    I really want to support Kbin and stay on your instance, but not having a mobile app is a serious deal-breaker. Supporting apps should get priority over introducing new kbin features IMHO. Kbin.social is the biggest instance, so I'd expect it to support all needed APIs?

    I hoped Artemis would deliver, but it didn't. Now Interstellar is my next resort. Today I even considered ... <whisper> returning to Reddit </whisper> for a brief moment.

    DracolaAdil, w [UPDATE] Issues with the functioning of kbin.social
    @DracolaAdil@kbin.social avatar

    Thanks a lot Ernest, you are the best.

    Yup, since last night using Kbin (on both the web app and Tundra) has been a lot smoother. I've only encountered a couple of error screens.

    If you wouldn't mind, what did happen to Kbin? Was it a Lemmy update...kbin specific problem?

    Anyway I just want to say thank and to make sure you take breaks whenever you can.

    leaskovski,
    @leaskovski@kbin.social avatar

    There's a 'jailbait' mag there that should just be deleted.

    daredevil,

    I've taken care of it. 🙂

    livus,
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    @daredevil hey how did you get rid of it altogether?

    I just noticed we had a "frenworld" (copy of a subreddit that was notoriously racist, antisemitic etc) and requested ownership thinking I could delete it but now it's listed as a magazine I mod and I can't seem to either delete it or detatch myself from it. I don't want it listed under mags I mod! Help!

    @Ernest @ernest @PugJesus

    PugJesus,
    @PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

    If memory serves the option is at the very bottom under the first page of the magazine panel.

    livus,
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    @PugJesus you mean the Delete button? I hit that but all it did was change it to a "Restore" button.

    I think this means people get "Empty" when they visit @frenworld. But the racist magazine is still listed on my profile as a magazine I moderate, which is the last thing I want.

    PugJesus,
    @PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

    Hm. The ones I deleted are removed from my profile.

    bluGill,

    Seems like names like that should be in a 'if you create the mag you are automatically banned ).

    Is this thread monitored? Asking because, from what I observed, that federated Hexbear(dot)net users and communities don't seem to be possible to block. Or should I use the contact form?

    xep,

    I've noticed this too. Is there any workaround? Some Hexbear users are egregious and clutter up posts with meaningless noise.
