Good write up! It certainly made me nostalgic for the games of that era.

I expected this to be bashing from the title, but it took a pleasant turn. Makes me want to play the game now.

who the fuck even wants cross play this badly? minecraft bedrock exists seemingly solely for cross play , and anytime i play minecraft with someone they specifically want to play java. i’m convinced the largest market share of cross play users is young folks with no real control over what play they play on.

Lojcs,

What does cross play have to do with this?

sugar_in_your_tea,

That’s the excuse those companies give for it. There’s nothing stopping someone like Microsoft from making “Bedrock” and “Java” Minecraft versions play together. Just establish an API and make separate clients if needed.

Lojcs,

Bedrock and java have different behaviors in many things. Not to mention different mod scenes. Those two are very much different games imo.

But still I don’t see what that has to do with always online. Crossplay doesn’t need you to be always online

sugar_in_your_tea,

And those separate behaviors would be minimized if they supported cross play between Java and Bedrock.

As for cross play and always online, you’re absolutely right that it doesn’t require it, but it makes things a little simpler. If a game requires you to login with the server on startup, that check only has to happen once, instead of happening when you engage with the multiplayer mode. It also makes it so the game can integrate social aspects pretty easily (friend X is online, do you want to play together?).

So if a game offers multiplayer as it’s intended main gameplay, then it can make sense to require always online.

That said, I still hate it. I would prefer companies be forced to support offline play if they offer a significant single player experience. I know it’s something I consider when buying a game (I play with my Steam Deck offline quite frequently), and ideally game stores would have similar requirements as well.

Voroxpete, w Jagged Alliance 3 Reviews | OpenCritic

Here’s my review; the game is awesome.

It’s not for everyone. The combat is extremely tactical; you have different firemodes, different ammo types, the ability to set overwatch zones, different stances, stealth, the ability to choose exactly what body part you’re aiming at (you can literally shoot people in the junk), and the game expects you to fully utilize all of these tools right off the bat.

This is a total sandbox. There are quests that will be presented to give you some guidance, and the game starts you off on a very small island compared to the rest of the map, but other than that there is zero handholding. You’ll get advice, you’ll get hints, but you’re fully allowed to fuck up in any way you like from the moment you press start (down to and including fucking up your team selection). Helpfully though, the game does keep an extensive history of autosaves, including your last three turns in combat.

Thing is, if this game is for you, then everything I just described sounds fucking awesome.

And let me tell you, it is fucking awesome. This game is like Elden Ring as a tactical squad based RPG. It presents you with an array of tools, and a vast world to use them in, and then just says “Go, have fun!” and takes all the constraints away that most games like this would have.

Aside from the lack of hand holding, the B one other thing that will turn some people off is the tone. What Jagged Alliance has always gone for is “pastiche of eighties action movies.” This is Rambo meets Die Hard meets The Expendables. The dialogue is cheesy as fuck. Every character is a stereotype, including the westerners. Most of them are awful people, because they’re mercenaries. You’re literally funded by blood diamonds. But, FWIW, your enemies are explicitly fascists. You’re basically killing West African Jan 6ers. So that’s neat.

The humour is mostly dumb. The writing is cornball. And I completely get that for some people this goofy tone might feel strongly at odds with the brutally unforgiving combat. That’s just how it be I guess, and if you can’t jam with that, I understand.

The one other point of contention I’ve seen in a lot of reviews is the lack of a hit percentage. The game gives you a detailed breakdown of every single factor that affects your shot, but never the actual numbers. This is a conscious design choice. If you hate it, the game is extremely modabble and there’s already a mod for that. But I’m begging you to please try playing as is first. I didn’t know how I’d feel about the lack of hard numbers but going in, but now I absolutely love it. It’s so freeing. I find myself actually thinking about the tactics I’m using, looking at the battlefield and the enemies instead of just running down a spreadsheet.

What was promised where? Because yeah, get capable technical team together who are excited to share a project they’re working on, and they are bound to be optimistic about what could be realistically implemented over a long timeframe. Nothing but the official release product information should be considered a promise, and nothing but unsponsored, unaffiliated reviews should be taken as proof.

I highly doubt that any pre-launch ‘promises’ were made with an intention to decieve.

  • aSingularFemboyHooter,

But it’s pretty realistic and happens all the time. I don’t see what’s ‘bootlicky’ about not trusting ‘promises’ by corporations years before release that are not protected under laws like the Trades Description Act.

I don’t know what was supposedly promised, because I didn’t follow interviews and stuff leading up to it, I just bought the game based on what was actually delivered in the end, which is how all purchases should really be made.

Stuff mentioned during development should never be taken as a promise, no matter how trustworthy or honest the developer is. This is just the simple reality of long projects.

It’s also why we don’t hear from devs as much these days, instead it’s mostly PR people, as too much weight is put on off-hand quotes.

Studios like CDPR have nothing to gain, and lots to lose, by deliberately over-promising.

    Tencha,

I would guess of us already moved on. We bought the game on launch, got a shitty, barely working experience. Then after finishing it or not, we moved on. Now, every few months there’s always some posts about about the game finally being good, even years after its release. But I only remember my shitty experience because I moved on. I couldn’t care less about the game at this point.

    picnic,

    Oh well patientgamers always win.

While I loved the cyberpunk's premise, idea and atmosphere since the game's announcement, I sticked to the "no preorders ever" rule and because of reviews decided to just wait them to patch it.

Still haven't played it, but likely now I can add it to my wishlist and when the time's right, I'll try it out.

    sciawp,

This is the way. Just picked it up on steam summer sale since I hear the new dlc is coming soon with a lot of changes to the base game.

I have critiques but overall it’s a really beautiful game with good characters and story. The gameplay is interesting and varied enough, too. I’ve still encountered a quite a few crazy bugs but nothing too frustrating.

I hope they do more with this franchise because I really like what they have set out to make and I’d love to see it even more fleshed out in the future

I've never played a Jagged Alliance game, but I'm a huge fan of Haemimont for Tropico and Surviving Mars. Even though this is a totally different genre, the fact that OG Jagged Alliance fans are hyped about this game's reception is pretty much making this a must play for me.

avatar, w Team Fortress 2 reaches new player count record at 250k players

I loaded up TF2 a few months ago just for a quick game, expecting to get into yet another round of I’m-so-over-it 2fort.

What happened instead of that was a completely nostalgic get-into-any-map-I-wanted round after round of full servers like I’d never put the game away. Dustbowl, Gravelpit, Steel, trying to re-learn all the maps, finding other players who had long since figured out new clever ways to use weapons and classes that I’d always thought of as sub-standard.

And I’m in a region where there should be less players.

As someone who bought a physical disc copy of The Orange Box on launch day, it…kinda slays me that TF2 is still running. It’s a very different game than it was in my day, and it is just wild hearing kids younger than the game talking about it. Gaming almost always moves on faster than this.

That launch day was amazing. We had a 2 day LAN party that weekend and played TF2 almost exclusively. This was with a group that had formed around TFC. Then about 6 years after launch I introduced my son to it and he became hooked and we played for years together. There’s a certain magic to all versions of TF that just doesn’t exist in other games.

(it’s probably the well balanced gameplay and dedicated servers)
