Because people believe a VPN or a seedbox is gonna save them from legal repercussions. They paid for it with their real information and credit card too, for convenience. They compromised their private tracker identity and must abandon the trackers the moment the legal landscape incentives companies to pursue individual copyright infringements. But most probably won’t, and face the consequences if that ever happens.

@toxictenement@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

From what I have read on the upcoming implementation on i2p in qbit, I do not forsee it being adopted by the core torrent user base. The main issue I have with it is that while you can download from clearnet peers, you are only able to seed to other i2p peers. This completely eliminates any adoption by anyone using private trackers. Its not like the guys in brazil are going to jump through an extra hoop to hide their ip since they never needed to in the first place, so they can be ruled out for adoption as well. What I really fear is that its going to create a completely unnecessary schism in the userbase with a sort of ‘leechnet’ walled garden of i2p users which would hurt the greater availability of seeders. I also haven’t gotten a straight answer from anyone how ports are going to work in i2p, since normally its imperative to have a forwarded port in order to be a full participant. Unless i2p users can seed to clearnet users without issue, I am going to be worried about the impact on torrent health as a whole.

Why is it in Java??

There is a more performant C++ implementation but it’s been a long while since I’ve used either it or the java implementation. Worth checking out.

Probably mostly cause:

  • Slow speed unless you you keep your router 24/7
  • People are used to download torrents fast
  • Clearnet has much bigger torrent database

To anyone who isn’t interested in Japanese-style visual novels, I’d recommend Scarlet Hollow. It’s an “immersive horror-mystery” illustrated by Abby Howard (of The Last Halloween fame). It’s an episodic title (the first episode is free on Steam) and it is not finished yet.

The more ad-riddled they make the platform to try and monetise users, the more they make adblocks necessary to even be usable.

I didn’t use to both with adblockers. I didn’t like ads, but they didn’t affect me enough for me to go through any effort blocking them.

Now I use blockers everywhere, on every platform. Even for creators I like, because I know how little they actually make for ads - so how bout instead of watching 12 hours of ads so they can get 2c, I just send them a dollar or buy their merch every once in a while to not watch ads at all? Etc.

Ads could have had a place. There are ads that serve a purpose, that have minimal disruption but still give businesses a way to develop awareness for those who might want to use them.

Movie trailers (including when they stopped trailing movies and started leading them) are examples of ‘acceptable ads’ to me. When I purchase something from a store and they include a printed card from their sponsor. When sports teams have logos for being sponsored. A work van with the business logo parked while out on call. Etc.

But the internet’s online ads? Email spam? Telemarketing? These are forms of advertising that are actively hostile, and they’ve become the default. So now a user that wants to be on the internet at all is best served by block all ads, including the ones that would’ve otherwise been reasonable.

Google will never make me feel guilty for blocking ads when they’re already making their search engine unusable, too.

And while I’m at it, here’s the filters to add to your uBlock Origin’s MY FILTERS settings to block YT’s blocker:

youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false)

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)

youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, [])

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

Can’t they block the likes of Freetube, Newpipe, Revanced?

Anon,

These clients use the same set of APIs as the YouTube official client. Unlike the Twitter and Reddit clients which used APIs for 3rd-party.

BlackSam,

Newpipe doesn’t use youtube official API. It does webpage parsing afaik

Not the main point, but this is the first time I’ve seen “allowlisted”. Lol

…are they trying to avoid saying whitelisted because of the word “white”?

Andreas,
@Andreas@feddit.dk avatar

Yes, it started from this terminology change at Twitter in 2020. They’re the reason that version control systems call the primary branch ‘main’ instead of ‘master’ by default, because ‘master’ comes from the master/slave terminology that is used in electronics hardware design.

There’s a comment here saying that master/slave in hardware design is being replaced by primary/secondary because of the software trend, which I think is stupid. Master/slave works much better in that context because the master device controls the slave device. Primary/secondary implies that the slave device is a fallback of the master device.

sub_, do gaming w Visual Novel Recommendations~?

Zero Escape series: I love them, even ZTD. Some hated that ending, while I don’t think it’s that bad.

Infinity series:

  • Never7 is very slow, and romance heavy with bit sci-fi. I don’t like this game
  • Ever17 starts getting better, leaning more towards sci-fi, but can still be quite slow
  • Remember11 is the best among the infinity series, it’s sci-fi horror mystery. Some say the ending is kinda incomplete due to budget issue, I’d say that the ending is bit of cliffhanger, but the main story is more or less complete

Raging Loop: a really good supernatural horror mystery. Maybe even better than Zero Escape series. I highly recommend this.

Paranormasight: a solid horror mystery VN released this year, there’s some smart puzzle and writing, but the ending is kinda unfulfilling.

Meitantei Conan & Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbou: it’s fan translated DS game. I am a Kindaichi fan, and the Kindaichi section is good mystery. The Conan part is … well, I’m not into Case Closed, their mystery always feel bit geared towards kids.

Danganronpa series: There are parts of the games that I like, but somehow I couldn’t stand the annoying character tropes prevalent in the series, and also those fan-service-y part. Some people dislike the final ending, I’m ok with it.

Root Letter & Root Film: Root Letter starts out good, but somehow one of the endings ruined the whole game. Root Film starts off promising, but the deduction part is kinda stupid and boring. Also the ending is not good.

Policenauts & Snatcher: They are quite interesting. I enjoyed Policenauts quite a bit. Snatcher is good too.

Silver Case: couldn’t stand the banter and writing. Everything feels so slow, and very Suda51.

13 Sentinels Aegis Rim: quite a solid sci-fi kitchen sink visual novel. It does feel like they are biting more than they could chew though.

AI the Somnium File: okay sci-fi mystery VN, I don’t think it hits the high of Zero Escape.

Fatamorgana: I thought it was a murder mystery VN, didn’t realize it’s more romance, couldn’t get into it.

Steins; Gate: I tried to like this game so many times. Okabe the main character is very grating.

I’ve probably missed some, I recently bought Root Double, which is from the co-writer of the Infinity series, heard that it’s really good.
