Depends on the game. If audio is a huge part I use my headset, but most games I play these days I have on mute or close to (old school Runescape, Minecraft, TrackMania). Baldur’s gate 3 and counter strike 2 are both fine on my laptop speakers although they do fairly good directional audio as long as it isn’t in a horrible room for audio.
When I played Forza horizon that was mostly on mute too, or at least quiet enough to not be the primary audio.
I’ve tried using a headset for games but after like an hour or so it just feels like shit.
I bought a Retroid 3+ a while ago. It was an interesting experiment, but ultimately a pain in the ass to configure.
Ideally I just want to select a rom or game and play. I really don’t enjoy spending hours in settings and tweaking every detail to get a have to run decently. I don’t need AAA, but GameCube and PS2 would be cool.
Is that a thing? Or am I doomed to hangout in RetroArch settings?
GameCube and PS2 are a breeze to set up. I never use RetroArch for either of them, all you need to do is set the bios for PS2, change the input (AYN will automatically be set, but I find its better safe than sorry as it can make the odd error when configuring input for you!), choose your upscaling and go!
GCN was even easier, input and upscale, then play!
I’ll be writing up a thorough guide/games/settings post, I’ll find you an link you when I do if you’d like? But for PS2 and GCN its the work of 2 mins at the most on each :)
Since I do audio stuff, for my headphones I use a Shure SRH440A. It does a very good job from what I can tell and for my regular speakers I use a Logitech G560 but I’m thinking of changing these out for a set of studio monitors since they’re randomly disconnecting all the time.
At my gaming PC, I got Logitech G560 speakers and also a G733 headset. Both were gifts. I slightly prefer the headset (used to gaming with headphones after decades), but the speakers are nice to give my ears a temporary rest plus them lighting up the wall behind the monitor is cool.
On the TV, an Ultimea soundbar + rear speakers set. Cheapest I could find with surround where subwoofer and rears are wireless as due to my living room layout running cables there would be impractical. Not the best soujd but worlds better than the TV itself and good enough for all my gaming needs.
Sweet! Didn’t even know Logitech makes speakers! Wireless sound has come a long way, in my opinion. I don’t think one would notice any difference playing games anyway. Really wish I could try gaming with a subwoofer! :)
S760D (5.1) from edifier. It punches far above its weight imo. I use a sennheiser pc37x if I need to be in voice chat but as good as headphones sound I don’t necessarily want to be wearing them all day.
5.1 sound system from DaLi (Danish Loudspeakers). Even the Oberon series is fine for ambience. Love losing myself in Zelda BotW and its weather effects. A good subwoofer adds a lot to the experience aswell.
I think the steam deck might be worth it for the sake of giving her the option to play stuff that’s isn’t on switch.
Like, sure, maybe she never ends up caring about anything but first party Nintendo originals. But, giving that option opens up a world of possibility.
I have a little cousin, he’s not exactly the most technical, not the most patient with such things, he calls me a lot for help with stuff. But he’s on a laptop instead of a switch or a console because he wanted to play modded Minecraft, i’ve seen him grow a lot in being willing to understand this stuff because he was given an opportunity and a reason to engage with it.
If you want any games for switch to work as intended, without a bunch of lag or any major fiddling to get that one specific game to work, switch/2 is sadly the only way to go.
As for the deck route, absolutely depends on various things. Is she okay with piracy and will she know? Do y’all plan on using it just for switch emulation or are there other games on other consoles/Steam/other storefronts that are gonna be emulated/installed? If yes to questions like that, deck would be the way to go. More bang for your buck due to not being limited to a single games ecosystem.
Also, another thing to think about, is that there are current, IIRC, Zer0 switch 2 emulators that can do much of anything, so you’d have to emulate the switch 1 version of games on something like Ryubing Ryujinx. Do you wanna wait for a switch 2 emulator that might not be able to run that less popular title you like because they’re focusing on the big triple AAA titles? Good to keep this in mind, IMO.
I do miss that carefree goofing around. Now I need to design, plan, optimize, etc. I know how to do stuff (mostly), so there less exploration and discovery and more of just work.
But at least stuff I make now is better hah (or at least I hope so)
Invisible walls. And I’m not saying the ones that are like way up out of the way that you have to nearly use glitches to get to. I’m talking the “walking down a city street and then you’re stopped in the middle of the road for no reason” kind. Like, you put area there that I can see, I want to go there. If you don’t want me to go there at least put something there to indicate it’s the edge of the map.
Can you remote into a Steam Deck? I’m guessing yes but I’m not sure.
Switch 2 is an easy win in your mother’s case, though. People see emulation but they don’t see the hoops you have to jump through, and the Switch 2 is a solid machine, it just doesn’t have the breadth of games.
I kinda want a Deck (I only have a 3DSXL and Switch 1 for mobile gaming, not counting phones) but I’m also not discounting the Switch 2. On Switch, I almost exclusively play Animal Crossing, and the performance gains of the Switch 2 upgrade alone make it almost worth it for a game I play almost daily. But I’ve been playing for a year, I’m on my third island, and I’m afraid I’m starting to get tired of it. I know about the free hotel DLC/update coming in January, it’s basically a lite/free version of the Happy Home Paradise DLC (same mechanic), but I think it’ll be too little too late for me, let alone people who have been crossing since ACNH came out in 2020 — or longer, with previous titles. (I have the modded HShop version, Welcome Luxury, which supposedly fixes a lot of stuff, but I’ve had a hard time getting into it after being spoiled by New Horizons.)
