The problem is that the battle system is slow. Other games in the genre know how to speed things up. Pokemon insists on providing information one message box at a time. If they fix that, they could make the game feel faster.
Give all players a pause limit. A certain number of minutes per game and per pause, and a number of pauses. Players can’t pause anymore after going over their time limit or pause count limit. The game resumes after a pause’s time limit is reached.
Pausing should happen after a delay of a certain number of seconds. So a player hits pause, countdown starts before actually pausing.
Resuming from a pause also has a timer.
Players’ pause stats are retained. People who take more pauses or spend more time pausing the game get matched with each other.

Some history is in order. The two most influential JRPG developers are Square Enix and Nihon Falcom. Square Enix gave us Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
Uhh… credibility lost. They’re saying history is in order and they immediately begin by rewriting history.
Squaresoft and Enix were two different companies for decades, particularly when they were giving us Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
