It seems like every other week a game studio is massively laying off employees; sometimes after years of development. What I’m reading is that it’s a quick way to lower expenses and pad the investors’ pockets, flooding the market with developers and reducing their value, to then hire them back a few months later at lower...
People that don’t know of this (or don’t care) will indiscriminately buy their products. To unseat them it would require a handheld that targets the same market and a killer game for that handheld.
They make a TV show out of everything nowadays, don’t they?

Of course. It’s just unoriginal. But that’s fine. I don’t have to watch it.

Now that’s a good client! I’ll see what happens. If I get getting questions about “why are you doing this” and “how are you doing this?”, I’ll just go back to the spoiler and people using broken clients can block me if they like.
It’s an open world game series with 4 games. It’s been so long since I played them, I barely remember what happened and where it’s canon or not. So, I’m practically in the same boat 🙂
Anything closed-source (designs, code, documentation, …) should be forced to be opensourced after either obsoletion/deprecation or a fixed time period, whichever happens first.
That’s legal? Can a contract be changed willy nilly in the US like that? In the EU it’s a least a month’s notice and in some EU countries even 3 months notice!
That’s precisely it. Maybe I should add a blurb about that 🤔 (for later)

IMO worker-owned businesses should be the future. There should also be a forced role-switch or shadowing for managers and workers, so that both understand better what each others respective jobs look like. Managers often think they should be earning their money because their work is more important and set the salaries as such: “Without me, you wouldn’t know what to do, so my job is more important should be compensated more”. They are out of touch with their workers and their realities.
I doubt that the license you include will have any influence on people doing scraping for commercial AI :(
That doesn’t deter me. It’s just a keystroke to insert 🤷 If someday I read that the EU or the US decided anything can be used to train AI, then I’d stop.
How hard is it for game devs to organize themselves and start companies that respect them? Worker-owned game studios. Is that hard? Are they unionizing?
Inspired by a discussion I had elsewhere and the article “Women in Games swaps male and female voices to highlight harassment in gaming”, how about we start a voice modulation challenge where you have to play at least one online game with a voice modulator to sound like a girl?...
It’s not about experimentation, but awareness. Experiencing life as a woman IRL is not easy - you can’t get a sex change on a whim or quickly hop into a female body. In an online game however, changing your voice is the probably the most convincing way to do so and it’s quite easy.
If even a small percentage of men experiencing the other side of the coin became active in improving the gaming space, it would be something.
Waiting and hoping for better moderation tools and clear community standards is non-active course of “action”. It’s like saying "I’m not going to vote because the system is shit 🙅 " and expecting it to get better.
But my point was that imo, everyone that cares about the problem is already aware of it, and more awareness doesn’t solve the problem either.
I’m not sure that’s true. Yes people who care are aware, but I’d argue there are many who don’t now and aren’t aware. I for example didn’t know the impact was measurable in performance. My gullet has been open a few times while gaming online and the regret kicked in not long after, but using my mic has been so rare, I wouldn’t have been able to tie the shitty responses to decreased performance.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the “gamer girls suck because they’re women” crowd joining the challenge figured out that they were part of the performance problem. That is if they had the ability to self-reflect, which probably the minority has.
At a certain point, awareness becomes preaching to the choir. The assholes who are causing the problem won’t change their behavior unless they are forced to.
Oh, in that regard, yes, I agree. At the very base level, assholes will be assholes and those people can only be forced or kicked out
If your view is that most people are self-centered and nasty I think you maybe need to socialize with different people. Like you said the anonymity of the internet dehumanizes people and encourages more toxic behavior, I don’t believe most people really are so toxic though.
It comes from real life experience. Growing up where I did was eye-opening to human misery and cruelty. Sadly, other people had it even worse than I did. I’ll stop there before I get too negative.
