Yeah I wish we could go back to a model like that, the way PC gaming used to be. The sticking point would be battle pass progression, as mush as I hate it and an FPS is pretty much doa without it, although Hell Let Loose allows for rank progression while playing on clan-rented servers so it should work in theory.
The types of cheats that anti cheat in kernel space are trying to detect don’t view the video feed as such. They hook the process directly to read the memory, and the chest developer has reverse engineered the game binary to find out what variables correspond to things like opposing players, then using that information they draw stuff like wall hacks on the screen.
But yeah I guess an fps developer could move to a GeForce now type of model to eliminate cheats like that, but then no one would play that fps because of the input lag issues.
I’m familiar with reveng from a malware and security testing point of view, using tools like IDA, Binja, Ghidra, etc., so I was aware that decompilers are taking the compiled assembly instructions, then recreating Intermediate Language and pseudo-C stuff without debugging info or original function names and stuff, but I was missing the key point of game assets not being distributable.

You should check out The Finals. Free to play, runs on Linux, guns feel and sound mint, dev studio made up of a bunch of former DICE devs. It’s not everyone’s bag of tea though there’s a lot of decision space in the main Cashout mode.

I was under the impression that the source code is copyrighted, as is the compiled build of the game, and that decompiling the game is a violation of the Terms of Service, which would make distributing it still illegal. I’d love to be wrong about this though.
I work on a computer at a desk all day. I’m do penetration testing and red team operations, so I spend a fuck ton of time doing training and development courses and labs which usually just involve typing a bunch of shit into a terminal window, both during work and on my own time (I genuinely enjoy it, it’s not a shitty workplace colonizing my off time situation), and I’ve played games my entire life.
Idk I’ve never had this problem. Screens recharge me, it’s people that drain me. I’d have the same flipped question for product vendors that are always at conferences and stuff, or business insurance sales people, just wondering how they get through all these small talk conversations, sales calls, dinners with clients, etc., without a chance to just sit behind a screen and answer people at whatever pace they need.
Oh. I have a variable height desk I got from DeskHaus. I love it. I’m standing a fair amount of the time I’m working. I have a decent SteelCase chair I bought during the beginning of covid. I got it from a refurb reseller, but even brand new it’s not their nicest chair, but it’s expensive enough and holding up well enough that I don’t see a reason to replace it yet. Standing through the workday helps me not feel exhausted and tired of sitting in the same chair for 12 hours since I haven’t been.
We’re reaching the end of the current season of THE FINALS, so I’ve been grinding for the last seasonal reward skin tier.
I’ve been kind of down on myself for getting sucked in to the seasonal cycle of modern FPS games and letting my single player stuff lay neglected, but the finals is such a phenomenal shooter I can’t help myself. I alternate between wanting more people to play and experience it because of how good it is, to being happy it’s small and not inundated with people. While the community can be a bit toxic, I get matched with a lot more just generally chill people than not, and more people on mic communicating about the game than I can remember in a really long time.
I need to get around to finishing bg3, and cp2077 now that I have a new gpu.
