Larian doesn’t lock your save files to an online server. You can jump into appdata and save scum manually even in honour mode.

Nothing stops you from busting your games on other platforms when available. I always choose GOG over steam personally. What cut they take from publishers isn’t consumers’ concern.

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

They aren’t exclusionary.

I think Phil like most executives prioritise whatever they think will be best for their career, regardless of what their preference is

UndercoverUlrikHD,

Wrath of the righteous runs pretty poorly in my experience, no really playable without a graphic cards. Kingmaker works better though

“ignoring the major players in the industry”

UE5 had turned into the standard whether you like it or not. I personally don’t like the engine, but that doesn’t mean I’ll lie about its position in the market, and neither should you. You aren’t doing Godot any favours with it

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

Your preference doesn’t dictate what’s industry standard is my point. It would be like someone only playing exclusively Total War games claiming the Warscape Engine is industry standard, sounds pretty stupid doesn’t it.

The last AAA game I bought was Fallen Order,

A shame you missed out on Baldurs Gate 3 then. Alan Wake also got great criticism.

Lol, alright dude

Sega sells off Relic Entertainment, will axe 240 jobs (www.gamedeveloper.com) angielski

Canada-based studio Relic Entertainment, which recently released Company of Heroes 3, did receive some good news in the midst of these layoffs. The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it is becoming an independent studio thanks to the help of “an external investor” who went unnamed.

UndercoverUlrikHD,

Eh, CA pretty much aced their DLC strategy for warhammer 2. It’s with Warhammer 3 that they fell of a cliff. And three kingdoms barely got any DLC before getting cancelled.

They’ll probably work on another divinity game, but I’d love them trying out a game based on pathfinder.

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

I guess people just have different preferences. To me, the chaos of DoS turned rather monotone. You could get rich by betting that every combat encounter would end with half the map on fire. It was a real issue that Larian fixed in bg3 thankfully.

And have you payed pathfinder wrath of the righteous? In my opinion, the combat experience is better than DoS 2 and bg3. I will say that I enjoyed the freedom of movement in DoS 2 though, it made positioning a core part of the combat.

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

Environmental flatness isn’t really tied to the game mechanics/rules though. Larian are just using a better engine with a larger budget than their competitors

In what way is protecting your game from piracy related to a broken ip model?

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

I don’t see what that have with ip laws to do, and pc gaming for the most part do not have service issues.

UndercoverUlrikHD,

I fail to see how this applies to denuvo creating software to make it easier to identify leakers

UndercoverUlrikHD,

Favourite is a strange term to use about companies, but in terms of how interested I would be if all I was told it was a game from X, it would likely go like this.

  1. Valve
  2. CDPR
  3. Guerrilla Games
  4. Naughty Dog

Right now, you assholes are telling the world that the strong and powerful get special terms, while 30% is for the little people.

Sheesh, I agree that equalising the cut valve takes would be great, but what’s up with that language in a private email.

This continuous evolution has actually seen Joel getting up at unsociable hours to sort out situations when the Helldivers 2 team realised the game wasn’t as balanced as it could be. “There have been some sudden moments where maybe one planet was too easy or one was too hard and [Joel] had to get up in the middle of the night to give the Automatons a bit of reinforcement so the players don’t take [the planet] too quickly,” Pilestedt said.

That’s honestly messed up and embarrassing for their developers. Writing a decent director shouldn’t be that hard.

Would have to be either the switch for Mario Kart, Super Smash and Nintendo sports when family is visiting or PS3 for FIFA World Cup 2010 when the lads are visiting. I suspect the switch would age better, though 2010 World Cup is an absolute gem.

I don’t think the single player game selection matters that much as it would grow stale with time anyway.

Since Microsoft has access to your entire windows system, there’s no harm letting every other company have it too then?

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

And now that MS is talking about putting their experiences on other platforms, people are upset with them? That they’ve somehow lost their way, that the brand is dying?

Those people are “invested” in the xbox eco system I would assume

  1. We didn’t need to rely on fakery like DLSS and frame generation to get playable frame rates.

If truly believe what you wrote, then you should never look into the details of how a game world is rendered. It’s fakery stacked upon fakery that somehow looks great. If anything, the current move of ray tracing with upscaling is less fakery than what was before.

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

That’s the point

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

But there’s a stark difference between optimization like culling, occlusion planes, LOD-s, half-res rendering of costly FX (like AO) and using a crutch like lowering the rendering resolution of the whole frame to try and make up for bad optimization or crap hardware.

There is not a stark difference if you were to describe the techniques objectively and not twist it to what you feel they’re like.

There are so many steps in the render pipeline where native resolution isn’t used. Yet I don’t here the crowd complaining about shadow map size or how reflections are half res. Upscaling is just another tool that allows us to create better looking frames at playable refresh rates. Compare Alan Wake or Avatar with DLSS with any other game without DLSS and they will still come out on top.

DLSS has it’s place for 150…200€ entry-level GPU-s trying to drive a 2.5k monitor, not 700€ “midrange” cards.

Just because you’re unhappy with Nvidia’s pricing strategy doesn’t mean you should slander new render techniques. You’re mixing two different topics.

    I can imagine Rocksteady could have made a solid game in the vein of the Arkham series if WB execs with zero competence didn’t interfere. A real waste of talent.

    Late for what?

    UndercoverUlrikHD,
    @UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

    Late for what though? Unless you got hours of spare time to play every day, there’s more great games to play than one got time to play. The graphics is still top of the class and the gameplay is modern, the game isn’t outdated whenever it arrives on PC.

    UndercoverUlrikHD,

    When it comes to combat and character creation, I’d argue the Pathfinder games surpasses BG3. BG3 obviously looks better and has a more interactive world, but the combat is lacking compared to the builds you can do in Pathfinder. More races, way more classes, more intricate builds, higher level cap, etc…

    For people that are more into combat and kiting out your characters, I think they’ll enjoy those games more. Not too say BG3 is bad or anything.

    UndercoverUlrikHD,
    @UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

    the combat in Baldur’s Gate 3 is far more interactive and dynamic. It’s also way more accessible.

    I agree, they also solved the “everything is on fire” problem that Divinity had with its element interactions. And it is what I hope the most Owlcat takes inspiration from.

    It still feels like the game is lacking in the combat diversity department compared to Pathfinder. From the way you buff characters before a dungeon/combat to how you can specialise your characters. Some of it may just be product of how Pathfinder and D&D 5ed are, and some of it may be a product of trying to make it more accessible as you put it, at the cost of choice and complexity.

    As an example, there’s a giant spider that wanders around on webs and summons smaller spiders from eggs, you can sneak around to destroy the eggs before combat to stop summoning and destroy the webs whilst the spider is on them to cause it to drop and take extreme damage.

    Yeah, never got to fight that boss. Started (and ended) the combat by eldritch blasting the poor baby over the edge into the abyss when I first saw it.

    No doubt BG3 is a better game for the general gaming crowd, but if combat and complex character building is your jam, I’d say Pathfinder might be a more enjoyable game.

    Lich seems like they have some cool unique options for them. Did you go with all the undead companions?

    So far only done Azata and Aeon runs, been thinking about doing a more evil mythic path later in the year when I got time.

    Just tried the portal: revolution. Obviously missing GLaDOS’ voice, but the puzzle are neat so far.

    UndercoverUlrikHD,
    @UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

    Doesn’t the game run natively on Linux? Surprised the Deck would run into issues.

    the puzzles are SUPER hard though, way harder than Revolution.

    I feel pretty rusty just doing the puzzles in revolution, not sure I would have the time for even harder ones 😬

    I’m sure a fair chunk of people are like me that don’t care about RGB and only got it because it’s easier/cheaper to get components with RGB than without. And I’m not downloading bloatware just to turn it off.

    Skyrim for sure, nothing gets you more prepared to start a new adventure than that.

    Honorable mention to the Last of Us after you’ve completed the game and are just sitting there, staring at the screen and wondering what to do next.

    Storytelling/quests that surpassed anything its modern contemporaries had to offer. Add in a beautiful open world with alright combat and it’s a hit in my books. Time also wasn’t an issue back in those days as I were still in high school when it launched.

    UndercoverUlrikHD,
    @UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

    Absolutely not. Their latest version of the RED engine is far better at utilising the resources available than UE5. UE5 is still to some degree limited by its render thread and doesn’t scale as well with more CPU cores the same way CP2077 does.

    Most UE5 also seems to launch with major performance issues, and many of the recently launched games will be borked for all eternity as shader compilation stutters aren’t something more powerful hardware will fix.

    It’s a real shame that the executives at CDPR doesn’t want to continue investing in the RED engine.

    Each time I check the r/totalwar subreddit, there seem to be another PR fuckup from CA. It’s really sad considering they were peaking just a few years ago with TWW2. Stopped maintaining my mods due to it.
