The Alters just released, is AA, weird, and very good! Indies are definitely the home for weird experimental shit but I feel like there are going to be more strange, niche games being made for larger budgets as the AAA space splinters and devours itself.
Hell yeah DQM! I imagine an alternate universe where that game took off instead of pokemon. So much fun and I still play it (and the sequels) regularly.
The thing for me wasn’t so much the game choice but the placement. It feels like they took a big bag of 100 of the best games and randomly picked them out one at a time. If you start to ask is Y really better than X on this list then it starts to make less and less sense.
I think there is a stark distinction between “really fun” and “one of the best games ever”. This list contains almost nothing which pushed against the barriers of gaming either now or in the past.
This one is good but Hungry Cat Nonograms is the best mobile picross game imo. Thousands of puzzles, amazing controls, beautiful art. It has ads which can be removed with a single in-app purchase. Been playing for almost 8 years and they’re still releasing weekly content.
