ShellMonkey, do games w 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux?

Well I see it I repos and app stores, not real sure of the development, last update on the Google store was Feb 2024. Still seems to work when I’ve played with it

I’ve been trying to get a good domain authed nix set up for a while. Alternately, if I could set up a gaming server using sunshine/moonlight.

ShellMonkey, do games w Do you wish that you could recycle games?

Little free digital libraries if you like. It’d be possible to do once the DRM is gone, if only there was a platform that made selling without the locks a major part of the pitch…

Functionally though it is possible, ebook lending exists already, but from what I gather proper libraries pay some sizable fee for the right to do so. There’s no reason other digital media couldn’t do the same.

ShellMonkey, do games w What games have you sunk the most time into?
@ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com avatar

For me a lot of it is in trying to maximize efficiencies. Setting up task duties and resources where you have plenty enough but not overloading your storage. Defensive position designs to counter any possible situation. Layouts to the base to allow free movement.

Lot of others try for specific artistic ideas or scenario goals, but I’m something of engineer minded player.

Rimworld, way too much Rimworld. A big part of it is that I’ll often have it one a second computer during the workday just on pause to pop in during downtime but I guess that still counts as playtime just being loaded.

ShellMonkey, do gaming w Why video game preservation is important?
@ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com avatar

Similar to why a recording of classic films are important. They serve as cultural touchpoints connecting individual experiences from a time and place long past. We retell stories from written literature for centuries and those are relatively difficult to preserve historically where video games are just a matter of storing a ROM on some file system

ShellMonkey, do gaming w Let's discuss: Final Fantasy

Frankly fo my time, best gaming series ever. With a few exceptions each one stands alone as it’s own story, but there are the ever present threads that in some cases turned into almost easter-egg items in a given game. Where are Biggs and Wedge going to show up this time? Can I get my hands on a choccobo? Hey Cid, thanks for the airship…

I guess do you mean with the cartoonish demeanor or just boxing ones as a whole? Have seen a few on playstation systems like knockout kings but they try and be all serious with it.

ShellMonkey, do gaming w Am I the only person that feels that retro games are better?
@ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com avatar

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for and what you consider flashy. I tend to do most of mine from GOG these days just out of a preference for avoiding DRM on principal. Found a few interesting ones just of the ‘cheap enough that it doesn’t matter if it’s not great’ types.

A major marker of quality for me tends to be if something just feels polished, like the menus make sense rather than looking like someone just stuck things where they could without though, but it could still run on a potato without making things melt.

Hardly the only, but not always the case either. I’d put some of it down to rose-colored nostalgia, some to the given fact that so much today is buying a base framework game and then selling 276 ‘addons’ to make it complete, and part to that back when systems didn’t have the power they do now developers couldn’t rely so much on all the flashy imagery and effects so they put more effort into the story and unique gameplay. A lot of smaller studio games pull that latter part off today still, but they’re sometimes harder to find.
