Gran Turismo 7 has received far less post-launch support than Gran Turismo Sport
Gran Turismo 7 is 17 months old and there is one complaint from its fans that keeps popping up. The post-release support is terrible.
I’m not even going to go into the shocking state of the in-game economy or issues that have been present in the game since launch. Looking at you Split-screen.
Today we’re going to look at post-release content updates. Namely new tracks.
Gran Turismo 7 launched on March 4th 2022 with just 4 new tracks that weren’t in Gran Turismo Sport. High Speed Ring, Deep Forrest, Trial Mountain and Daytona Speedway.
This worried some fans at the time of release but developers Polyphony Digital assured people that there would be a steady stream of post-launch content similar to what we saw with Gran Turismo Sport.
Fast forward 17 months and just three new tracks have been added to GT7. There have been updated layouts to existing tracks but for brand new locations we’ve had only three.
In comparison when Gran Turismo Sport was 17 months old it had received 11 brand new tracks plus several layouts to existing circuits.
GT Sports first new track landed just two months after release with the inclusion of Kyoto Driving Park on December 22nd 2017. Then just one month later Monza was added to the game.
I’m the months that followed there was no more than a two month gap between new tracks being added to GT Sport.
If we look at Gran Turismo 7 there was a three month wait until Watkins Glenn was added with update 1.17 on June 23rd. Then a long 5 months later Road Atlanta was added with update 1.26 in November 2022.
Three months after update 1.26 the third and most recent track was added. A controversial reimagining of the classic Gran Turismo circuit Grand Valley in February 2023.
We’re now 6 months out from the last circuit being added to Gran Turismo 7 with no signs of another anytime soon.
What’s more concerning is only three more tracks would come to GT Sport after its 17 month on sale before Polyphony Digital turned all of their attention to developing GT7.
That means that potentially Gran Turismo 7 could have as little as another 9 moths of post-release support before they concentrate entirely on developing Gran Turismo 8.
What about new cars I hear you ask. Well in Gran Turismo Sports first 12 months on sale 102 new cars were added to the game. So far, as of update 1.36 some 17 months post-launch just 54 new vehicles have been added to GT7.
Unfortunately this slow drip feed of content shows no sign of changing anytime soon and as communication from Polyphony Digital to its customers is close to non-existent I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t already full steam ahead on GT8.
There is slim chance that a big drop of new content is being held for a potential Spec II update which, if it follows the precedent set by GT Sport, could be released as soon as March 2024. But that would mean a full year and change between new tacks being added to the game.
It really does feel like Polyphony Digital simply don’t care about Gran Turismo 7 or it’s fans.
