The more ad-riddled they make the platform to try and monetise users, the more they make adblocks necessary to even be usable.
I didn’t use to both with adblockers. I didn’t like ads, but they didn’t affect me enough for me to go through any effort blocking them.
Now I use blockers everywhere, on every platform. Even for creators I like, because I know how little they actually make for ads - so how bout instead of watching 12 hours of ads so they can get 2c, I just send them a dollar or buy their merch every once in a while to not watch ads at all? Etc.
Ads could have had a place. There are ads that serve a purpose, that have minimal disruption but still give businesses a way to develop awareness for those who might want to use them.
Movie trailers (including when they stopped trailing movies and started leading them) are examples of ‘acceptable ads’ to me. When I purchase something from a store and they include a printed card from their sponsor. When sports teams have logos for being sponsored. A work van with the business logo parked while out on call. Etc.
But the internet’s online ads? Email spam? Telemarketing? These are forms of advertising that are actively hostile, and they’ve become the default. So now a user that wants to be on the internet at all is best served by block all ads, including the ones that would’ve otherwise been reasonable.
Google will never make me feel guilty for blocking ads when they’re already making their search engine unusable, too.
Sounds like the death knell for YT… what’s the point of a centralized platform, if we’re back to links to discover content. They could link to PeerTube.

They get jackshit from me now at all. At least before they may have made some revenue from me for viewing the videos, now I am a ghost. No money for anyone. (and in case you are gonna say - I dont care content makers are losing, they are all dumbarses, and if they are supporting yt still and not posting elsewhere, then they are just stupid cunts. The only reason google is doing this is to make more money off of the people who make content, but not upset their already unstable revenue income. If the content providers get antsy and leave, YT loses.

You had me until here. If you want to monetize online video content or get widespread appeal, YouTube is pretty much the viable choice atm, save for Twitch which only works if you’re a streamer or Nebula, which even then it alone doesn’t suffice and is very specific. If you plan on trying to “make it big” using PeerTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, etc. alone, your aspirations may as well be dead on arrival.
Not losing sleep over the money content creators lose over you using adblock is fine, I personally don’t put too much importance on it myself. But to call them all dumbasses or stupid cunts is just unreasonable, given the lack of a proper, popular alternative for most of them to do what they do.
I don’t agree with the name calling, but many content creators have already set a website, with some outside revenue sources like Patreon, selling merchandise, or other stuff.
They can’t leave the most popular platform, but they can set up alternatives for when it stops being the most popular, and in the meantime also target people who are leaving it already.
Oh yeah, I agree it’s a wise decision for any content creator, especially those who want to make a living from it, to diversify their sources of income. Backing up all content they post on YouTube to other sites as well is also really nice as it contributes to the push away from YouTube without having to risk little on their part as well
Proton VPN is probably one of the best VPNs out there. Has open source clients, is based in Switzerland so under their strong jurisdiction for privacy and data protection, doesn’t keep logs or sell data, has good speeds, includes useful features, etc. I’d definitely recommend it, as well as Proton’s other products.
I feel like we can ignore this and it’ll mostly be a non-issue. Hopefully I don’t have to eat those words later.
YouTube can detect common current adblocking methods, and use this to hinder you now, prompting to comply with them. If you do, they win. You pay for no ads or you have an exception in your adblocker.
As another comment mentioned, it’s a cat and mouse game. Adblockers will get ahead of it. So just wait it out.
I have a script I used to auto download new stuff from my subscriptions using yt-dlp. I never watch videos on youtube anymore because it’s just garbage, buffering all the time or just straight up not playing content. The only thing I miss is sponsor block but I don’t care that much

I have the script running every five minutes so I get a desktop notification telling me there’s a new video downloaded and by who. It takes some time for the sponsorblock segments to show up
I’ll make an updated lemmy post as well but for now it’s an old reddit post of mine. There’s also some great alternatives that I think are easier to set up if you don’t mind managing a separate subscriptions list - I made this script specifically because none of the options I’d seen were able to take your subscriptions from youtube and check them.
May be worth trying to set up with one of the alternative youtube frontends that have been popping up so you can use those accounts. I think it depends on if yt-dlp allows it as that’s what’s doing all the work here.
It feels similar to that old guy with all the classic cars rotting in the back 40 who refuses to sell at any sane price. Not analogous, exactly, but it’s the same feeling of frustration.
That’s my uncle! He has an half dozen rusty cars with broken engine in his garden and refuses to sell for sane prices. He always complains the retirement money is not enough for a living, but can’t get rid of that trash. My mom found someone wanting to buy one of those for 3000 euro, he said “but you can see listings for 50k for this car”. Dude, 50k is for museum-grade collectible car, and a listing doesn’t mean that will actually sell for that price.

I got another good example: I‘m in the market for a garden plot (I live in a city with no perspective on getting my own house soon).
There are waiting lists that are years if not decades long. All while gardens get sold/rented out behind the curtain and worst of all: abandoned ones rotting away or being used as scrap yards by companies (which should be illegal).
It just makes me so sad. We have so much stuff we could solve if you could just go to your local government rep and tell them to change this, state your reasons and watch it change.

AirVPN is great when paired with your own clients, like Wireguard or Passepartout, and you want to take advantage of its indefinite port forwarding. The clients aren’t user friendly.
Basically saying you download either Wireguard or OpenVPN (from their official websites) and download a config from airvpn, then load that config into either WG or OpenVPN depending on what you got.

No longer true for new user/new account at the moment. New account gets limited 5 ports. And to point out, technically it’s 20 ports for old users, not indefinite.
