The open world itself is not fake, but IMO the game is "No True Open World Game" as long as it keeps hijacking you all the time. The world itself is pretty deec. If you're on PC you can try the Resistance mod, it lets you customize the game a lot including how intrusive the main quest is.

It's not uncommon, but can be very grating depending on the circumstances. Dogmeat and the other companions are immortal because Rule of Fun - losing them would suck, which is why it's limited to the more masochistic (not that there's anything wrong with that) difficulty settings. Far Cry games generally try to seem realistic apart from some trademark trippiness, so when you blast someone with a rocket and they just ignore it, it's a bit jarring.

In-universe I think the idea is that you're tripping balls, it's a go-to excuse for "why is this boss fight behaving weird" in the Far Cry series.

Exactly this, Far Cry 5 did "ludonarrative dissonance" in a big way. Also, fake open world. 3 and 4 just had a bunch of annoyingly stupid story developments: you going into some Obviously Bad Idea or Diabolus-ex-machina shit - which is still really grating if you're otherwise playing methodically and cautiously, but they happened during missions and didn't intrude on the rest of the game. 5's stupid unwinnable kidnapping parties and stupid mandatory "drug trips" sure did, though.

Modding that shit away, it's still a reasonable game, but ye gods the story was terribly executed.

Is it just an exaggeration, though? It is old. It is... kinda crappy. I've played and loved a bunch of Bethesda games, but they do tend to fuck up in some pretty characteristic ways. So characteristic that they happened in Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallouts 3, NV and 4, and now apparently Starfield. In my hour or so of gameplay I already encountered the "corpses somersaulting around" thing, a tradition since at least Skyrim.

Creation Engine... Creation Engine never changes.

That should help in theory, but Steam is infamous for this problem, too, so it can't be helping all that much.

Are user reviews on places like Metacritic or Steam ever relevant? Review bombing happens consistently any time anyone is slightly miffed at something, which in gaming is literally all the time.

I'm not exposed to that many "gamer takes" lately, luckily. I watched a recent dunkey video on Starfield reviews, that had some thumb-headed idiot screaming in falsetto about the pronoun switch (oh, the horror, for such a thing to exist! oh, the humanity!). Other than that I haven't seen that much complaining about that specific thing. While it could still be about that, I also think it could easily be getting underwhelming scores because it's... a bit underwhelming. (So far, anyway, I haven't played a lot yet)

The excuse is the engine they refuse to let die. It's not a good excuse, but that's a lot of the trademark Bethesda wonk.

It's a zachtronics-like, but in a side-scroller? I like coding games but am not sure the combination works just like that. Personally, I'd expect the coding to be relevant to the world, not an unrelated theoretical exercise. Project Euler randomly tacked onto Mario would be a nope for me, but using coding as a meaningful part of the game, so it does visible, tangible, useful or just cool things? Sign me the fuck up.

If you haven't tried playing Zachtronics games, I'd give them a try. They're a major subniche of "coding games" and could be good for some inspiration. They're all basically coding either in spirit (SpaceChem, Magnum Opus) or directly (TIS-100, Shenzhen IO, Exapunks...), usually with some twist. Their languages tend to be "fake assembly", simplified and stylized.

Personally I've rarely had as much fun coding as in my early ComputerCraft days (computers/robots in Minecraft) because it... did stuff. I was already a coder, but was not used to seeing it translated into "physical" actions. Like the difference of learning/teaching Python with text-based UIs and exercises, vs a "robot" that drives around in the room and does things.

I've had some ideas along these lines myself, borrowing a lot of Zachlike inspiration, but I was going to go topdown or just omit the "overworld" entirely.

Gave Baldur's Gate 3 a try, I don't think it's for me. I didn't realize before starting that I absolutely fucking hate that kind of RNG, the Mindflayer "aesthetic" (body horror á la HR Giger-on-some-less-friendly-hallucinogenics? Check. Eye scream? Check. ), the threat of having content locked behind "lol, fuck you, you got the wrong dice roll hours ago", and, under the hood, a bunch of spreadsheet-esque mechanics I don't know jack about, never having played DnD.

Shame, seems like a lot of fun if you're into it.

Fair enough, I was just consciously avoiding "communist" because, I don't even know. Anything is socialist in American terms and I'm just confused, it seemed like "yur commie" would be slightly too on the nose. Not that I care too much when the context is someone's spamming game threads.
