NuPNuA,

At home, I can’t get Zelda anywhere else so I play it on the handheld on the sofa. Even PC games get played that way since the Steam Deck came out since I sit at a desk for work all day anyway.

NuPNuA,

Isn’t Hi-Fi Rush Steam Deck Verifed?

NuPNuA,

Good for them, they came out of nowhere with this game and smashed it, great gameplay, unique art, good sense of humour.

NuPNuA,

I’m pretty sure it was in her Uterus rather than up the Arse wasn’t it?

NuPNuA,

Data Plan? Who’s home internet has data limits on 2023?

NuPNuA,

Isn’t the size of your PC storage entirely user controlable? If you want 6x the memory you had in 2008 when F3 came out you could have it. The Xbox model at the time came with a 20gb hard drive on the standard model and 120gb for an Elite. So they’ve definitely exponentially grown to 512gb/1tb this gen.

NuPNuA,

This seems to be a point across all media at the moment, people watching/listening on sub-par equipment then complaining because the content is designed for higher quality gear.

“This film was too dark on my laptop screen” when it’s designed for a HDR enabled screen, “Nolan’s sound was mangled though my TV speakers” when it’s designed for at least a decent DTS set up. Etc. The same thing now seems to have infected games, “why is this 2023 game not designed for my 2018 rig and it’s limitations”.

NuPNuA,

The OP intimated they received funding from WotC to make the game. They didn’t.

NuPNuA,

I think they’ve justifiably earned some of the ire aimed at them. Kotaku that is, not women.

NuPNuA,

That model has been tried in the past and it didn’t work because no one was making any licensing costs from the games produced to pump into R&D to progress the platform. Remember the 3D0?

The reason a PS can’t play an Xbox game is because Sony don’t have access or the legal right to implement the hardware or software environment that MS have patented for the Xbox.

NuPNuA,

That’s just middleware isn’t it? Plenty of it exists but you still need to optimise the outcome to each hardware setup.

NuPNuA,

I play games with my mates on PC and PS all the time despite being on Xbox, it’s called crossplay.

NuPNuA,

Then who gets the licensing costs for the Dev kits? Who gets the 30% cut of the digital store? Who gets the cut of accessories sold? Each game sold? Who’s responsible for updating the OS?

The console market works how it does because they sell the tech at a loss and make up money on the ongoing sales. The 3DO tried the open source model in the early 90s and ended up with ridiculously pricey consoles as all the manufacturers needed to make their profit upfront. Eventually, there will be no price difference between a console and a PC if equivilent specs.

NuPNuA,

It’s a different model entirely, most copies of windows sold will never have a game installed on them bar the pack-ins. No one is buying a console to do spreadsheets.

NuPNuA,

I’m amazed everyone seems to have forgotten the open nature was an Achilles heel for the 3DO model, then it occured to me that the console is 30 years old and I’m even older lol.

The fact is that the console market works how it does, advanced tach at reasonable prices, because the platform holders make money on an ongoing basis from each user. Getting rid of that model will mean consoles selling for the same price as equivilent specced PCs at launch.

NuPNuA,

Why? What’s in it for them? The whole model is based on having a walled garden they make money on post console sale.

NuPNuA,

The Steam Deck is a PC at the end of the day though which has always been a different model. They still lock the main OS to their store despite it being more open if you want to dig deeper.

NuPNuA,

None of which changes the fact that the console market is driven by platform holders selling consoles for low profit or even a loss and making it up on the back end with their cut of all games, accessories, etc released for the format.

NuPNuA,

I’m not an achievement/trophy hunter personally but I can see some people’s issue there. The whole point of them is to indicate you’ve done something particular in game. If it’s just reaching a point in a story or whatever no big deal, but if it’s something that requires some skill, having it available when you can turn off the need for all those skills does undermine the system a bit.

As a recovering video game addict, what is the best way to avoid 'the jitters' when exposed something that reminds you of gaming?

To preface, this post isn’t a bash on gaming. I’ve been gaming since I was 3 years old on the NES. It was (and still is) a part of my life. That said, while I turned out ok in the end, I would play games every free moment I had. I’ve spent thousands of hours in World of Warcraft during the TBC-WotLK era. My pattern would...

NuPNuA,

Not to dismiss your issues mate, but I don’t know if a gaming sub is the best place to ask. Most of us in here probably put a few hours a day into games ourselves without considering it an issue.

NuPNuA,

Or your mate Dealer Dave how to get off the smack, lol.

The Steam Deck is changing how normies think of gaming PCs.

Just thought I’d share something I thought was pretty interesting. I have a mother in law who is… well let’s just say she’s a stereotypical older mom who doesn’t own a computer, just an iPad. During the pandemic, she started getting into Nintendo games and bought herself a Switch. Fast forward a few years later and...

NuPNuA,

It is odd being in the gen X and millenial cohorts and being two generations trapped between ones that either had little to no experience with computers or have only used smart tech that simplified everything down.

NuPNuA,

Eh, it’s not always great, Baldurs Gate 3 is “Varifed”, but it took some fiddling with the settings to get it toba stable 30 with decent lod on my deck.

NuPNuA,

All sorts of hobbies use the term to describe people who aren’t fully into something but have a passing interest, it’s a pretty standard phrase.

NuPNuA,

There’s always going to be people interested on computing more so than their average cohort, if there weren’t boomers into it we wouldn’t have got anywhere with the tech to begin with.

However simply owning a computer between the 70s to 2010 odd meant you had to do a lot more problem solving and fiddling that lead to a better understanding of how stuff worked across the generation as a whole in comparison. Whether it was learning to use BASIC on your micro computer or having to mess about with drivers in Win 98.

NuPNuA,

Yeah, I guess this has always been an issue with tech though the ages, computers are just my point of reference.

Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

NuPNuA,

Steam Deck is shaping up to be the “Nintendo” of handheld PCs. Not the most powerful thing on the market, but cleverly put together with its own bespoke software that allows users to customise and tweak games at the system level via quick access to its features. Having windows on the other machines makes your access to games better but means you have to dig harder or install extra software to do what the deck does. To paraphrase Sega’s 90s marketing, It Does what Windon’t.

NuPNuA,

Nintendo smashing the console market twice with underpowered hardware proved that.

NuPNuA,

Yeah, that’s not going to happen in a world where Gamepass is their new focus and those apps only work on Windows.

NuPNuA,

The Nintendo effect. Not only is Steam a “brand” that people know and recognise and very well have a collection of games already on, they’ve designed their software to be very functional for people who don’t know how to go digging for all the hidden options in windows. I can muck about with things like the thermal power limit, frame rate and refresh rate locks, half rate shading, scaler options, from one button access to eh side menu on my deck.

NuPNuA,

Steam Deck still holds its own on new releases if you’re happy to downgrade them a bit. I’m getting a decent 30 FPS experience on BG3 right now at mid settings. As someone who’s primarily a console gamer used to not having the ultra settings on games, it works for me.

NuPNuA,

I mean, they’ll have to make some big changes to Gamepass before it becomes worse value than buying all those games outright. Most subs are still pretty good value now for the level of content, available, they’re just not as cheap as they were when they were driving users.

NuPNuA,

Get a PS5? I’ve been back and forth between the two platforms for several generations now depending on who’s offering the best service.

NuPNuA,

Isn’t it the split screen causing the issue, I don’t think the PC version has that. To be fair, the game does play on steam deck, but you have to knock some graphics down and lock it to 30 for a stable experience. Personally I don’t think all the panic about the series s is justified, some Devs like CDPR have done amazing optimisation for it and like you say, games will be designed for less powerful PCs for a while yet based on stream surveys.

Obviously there’s a bottleneck in BG3s design and the S hardware somewhere they’re trying to solve with MS to get the game out. It’s unfortunate that it means MS miss out on a surprise hit of the year at launch, but it’s not like their players are short of an RPG to play very soon.

NuPNuA,

In almost every other case, it is playing them. BG3 is one outlier.

NuPNuA,

Oh totally, this isn’t a good thing. At the least Xbox has its own, hopefully great, RPG coming out at the same time.

NuPNuA,

Also, get Quake 4 on Xbox back cat on ethe Activison deal is done as they’ll have access to Raven software then.

NuPNuA,

I sware that’s happened with all big games of late, Elden Ring, TotK, etc. A few Devs decide to be contraian to the praise and then the media decides it a huge backlash.

NuPNuA,

Without capitalism Tetris would have remained an obscure piece of shareware probably vaguely known outside of ex-soviet nations. It’s only the desire to monitise the IP that saw it on every platform under the sun and packaged with every Gameboy.

NuPNuA,

Yeah, the creator didn’t profit at the time because of communism and their belief that his creation belonged to the state. If he had been in a capitalist country at the time he could have copyrighted his game asap and exploited it for profit himself.

NuPNuA,

At the very least a smart creator in the US can go to a solicitor and make sure he isn’t being mugged off before they sign a deal, you didn’t have that that with the Soviet Government.

Yes lots of creators have been screwed by the people that worked for, notably in the comics field. But a lot of the time it’s because they signed a contract having no inkling how big the work would be.

NuPNuA,

I don’t believe some people were tricked but we’re a victim of their own success. Take Alan Moore and Watchman for example. He signed the deal that he would get the rights to the book back once it went out of print as that’s how the industry model worked at the time. The book was so popular that it’s stayed in print for the last 40 odd years, so the rights didn’t revert. Maybe DC should have renegotiated things in light of that, but I see that he and they went into the deal on good faith based on industry realities at the time.

NuPNuA,

Yeah, the fact that so many element of society have no sense of humour about themselves or the capability for self-deprecation anymore won’t help.

I don’t imagine it will even be “woke”, I imagine it will be bland and safe to avoid putting off any of the audience as it will have to recoup a huge development cost.

NuPNuA,

Fair dos, don’t know where I got the impression they both left from.

NuPNuA,

Well, aside from the old 2D London expansion they’ve never gone prior to the 80s, a 70s game could be fun.

Then again, it’s not like the US hasn’t had plenty to satarise since V came out in 2013, but as others have pointed out a lot of the groups wouldn’t take it in good humour any more. It would either be described as a woke commie simulator or fash adjacent

NuPNuA,

That’s how sub services always work. They get a user base via great introduction offers then slowly raise prices up to where they should be and hope enough people are brought into the ecosystem to not leave.

NuPNuA,

For the trial, the actual service is going up a couple of quid a month.

NuPNuA,

I’m in the UK so it depends on where you are. Where I live on top of London though it’s fine.
