NuPNuA,

There does seem to be some people out there who are just radiating negativity about this game even more so than most.

I played a good few hours last night and it’s Skyrim in Space which is what I wanted.

I don’t know if it’s the Xbox console exclusivity that’s bringing fanboys out the woodwork or just that people like to attack a big, hyped up release like they did with Cyberpunk, but it’s brought out the worst in people.

NuPNuA,

Given that MS have put a lot of work into making your digital 360 titles work on Series s/x and even upgrading some of them, I don’t think that’s a concern with all publishers.

NuPNuA,

The way I see it, piracy is fine, but only once the format is dead. I recently hacked both my 3DS and Vita to access the whole libraries since those formats are dead with ones digital store switched off and the other half dead and barely functioning.

But yeah, pay for new releases.

NuPNuA,

It’s a first party title used to drive Gamepass subs now, they have different metrics for success. Not to mention you can play it streaming on multiple services too and on console. They’ll be fine not appealing to people stuck a decade back tech wise.

NuPNuA,

The Series S is still current Gen tech running at a lower power profile. A lower end PC may be using a previous gen CPU or GPU making it harder to optimise.

NuPNuA,

That depends what you’re going in expecting. Bethesda have been very clear that this isn’t a Space Opera but more hard-sci-fi. I don’t expect cities on every planet and alien political intrigue. I expect a cold, barren and uncaring universe that humans are trying to tame.

NuPNuA,

Fun is subjective though isn’t it?

NuPNuA,

If you’re on gamepass you only pay the 30 extra not full price. I didn’t either but was tempted.

NuPNuA,

Isn’t essentially just going to be an extension of Codemasters existing rally games? With EA as the publisher now?

NuPNuA,

Wasn’t there a threat of a game VA strike a few years ago and it turned out that some of the bigger names like Troy Baker aren’t in the Union?0

NuPNuA,

Aside from Square, MS seem to have a good relationship with most Japanese publishers at the moment. Bamco, Capcom, Konami and Sega all support the format with Sega seemingly all in on Gamepass (the Yakuza franchise has been a mainstay on there since I signed up four odd years ago). Capcom just put a game on GP day one.

NuPNuA,

Is it that hard in the days of solid state NVME drives? You just pop open the hatch and pop them in the slot.

NuPNuA,

Given that Starfield has a requirement for an SSD even in minimum requirements, would even USB3 be fast enough?

NuPNuA,

Fair enough, I imagine the potential audience of people who both have that tech (and are aware of if rather than it just coming with their machine) and also don’t have enough internal memory to install a game is quite small in the grand scheme of things and a hard sell for a publisher.

NuPNuA,

It’s still more work to fine tune your settings that simply selecting, performance or quality on console. Lots of us don’t want that agg with every new game.

NuPNuA,

Everything has the right to exist, whether it can financially justify the development costs is anoyjer matter.

NuPNuA,

I’ve played this on my deck, and it is playable, but the frame rate was not stable unless it capped it 30 and the graphics had to be dialed back a bit. If the S can hit 60 then it’s already a better version.

NuPNuA,

It’s one game. By and large developers have managed to get games running pretty well and feature complete ok the S. Some really impressive attempts like the Cyberpunk version. Everyone is thowing the baby out with the bathwater over one game.

NuPNuA,

All sorts of “impossible” poets were being made to switch a few years ago. Witcher 3, Doom, Wolfenstein 2, etc. The games have moved on to the point it’s not feasible anymore, but they would put them on there if they could.

NuPNuA,

I was just playing it from a mates library, going to wait for the Series X version now to carry on. Cheers though.

NuPNuA,

Quite frankly, I don’t think that’s true.

We’ve got games coming out at the moment that use Unreal 5 and it’s next gen features that are still coming out on the S like Immortals or Remnant 2. They have reduced fidelity on the S as expected but they still run fine there. BG3 is literally held up over one issue, the split-screen, that they’re apparently still working on to see if they can patch it back in post launch, MS clearly just let them launch without it to take a win back from Sony.

NuPNuA,

Why? If the game has been targetted at 30 though development and everything built around that it should be fine.

NuPNuA,

As naff as a Solo film was, they actually closed that plot hole and clarified he was talking about distance.

NuPNuA,

Didn’t realise that, makes more sense.

NuPNuA,

I admit, not having a PS5 I haven’t played FFXVI yet, but sometimes these things are world building around a more personal story which is what I understand the game to be from other people talking about it, just because something features in a world, doesn’t mean it needs to be further explored if that’s not the story that’s been written. Just because thats am element that interests Kotaku writers more due to there nationality and politics, doesn’t mean it was the story the writers set out to tell.

NuPNuA,

Yeah, I did see Steph Stirling’s video and I do get the arguments, but personally I don’t agree that just because it’s an element in the world building and the backstory of the main character it has to be a driving element of the plot.

Look at it like X-Men, being feared and hunted by humanity is sort of X-Men lore, but it isn’t the driving force of every story. Sometimes they’re just off having adventures in space or whatever.

NuPNuA,

At least they no have MS money behind them so they can go that last mile and tidy things up now. Much like Bethesda here too, under Zenimax Starfield would have been out last year with all those bugs and issues still in place.

NuPNuA,

When were games ever like that. Even in the microcomputer era sole bedroom coders were still selling their titles to publishers to make some money out of it. What your suggesting sounds like a horrible experience where everything is stuck in early access forever but with less reason for people to finish their project as no one has put money down.

NuPNuA,

As far as I understand Bethesda have actually got a relatively small team for the size of games they make but it’s made up of lots of people who have been there for a long time so they have a good knowledge base with less people, rather than just brute forcing it by throwing 5000 people at a game like Ubisoft. Also we have no way of knowing what their contacts with Zenimax/MS say about sales bonuses.

NuPNuA,

They’ve got a FO4 next gen patch due at some point two that some of them are probably working on.

NuPNuA,

You know Bethesda have other projects in the works that their staff probably moved too. Fallout 4 is getting a next gen patch and ES6 is in pre-production.

NuPNuA,

Even share ware was usually a portion of the game and you had to pay for the rest wasn’t it?

NuPNuA,

I didn’t really see much of a point made, just some hippy-dippy, information wants to be free man, fantasy utopia that will never work.

NuPNuA,

Well done, you deprived one of the good developers/publishers making full games with no microtransactions any compensation for their work.

NuPNuA,

That shouldn’t really effect anything but first party titles. Larian don’t care about Sony’s loss on the machine.

NuPNuA,

But Larian have already paid for that license, you’re not hurting WotC by not buying the game.

NuPNuA,

I’m technically working right now so don’t have time to dog up the tweet, but in reply to someone claiming that Lairan were funded by WotC to make the game, their CEO replied stating they approached them and paid for the rights, rather than WotC coming to them. Maybe there is a clause in the contract that WotC get a small percentage on a certain amount of sales nut from what it sounds like the ink was dry on the rights before development began

NuPNuA,

Yeah, but Larian shouldn’t care if Sony get 30% of £50 or £70 to make up their PS5 losses.

NuPNuA,

Do you not understand how IP we works? MS publish a minimal amount of the actual titles on the 360, the remainder belong to third party publishers that woukd never agree to this. MS have already tried to bring the whole 360 catalogue to the S/X back cat but can’t get a lot of these publishers to sign off on the adaptations needed to get them running.

NuPNuA,

Aside from games where the lisences have expired like Forza, most first party games are back cat on the series S/X aren’t they?

NuPNuA,

First party are largely covered though right. It’s third party they can’t get the rights to repackage that cause the issue.

NuPNuA,

Given that there’s plenty of PCs out there with lower spec than the S they still need to scale their game for, I doubt it will be as big an issue as people make out. BG3 is an odd outlier as they’ve put a splitscreenode in the console game that the PC version doesn’t have and that’s what’s holding things up.

NuPNuA,

Wasn’t the general idea that direct storage means data moves from the SDD to the GPU skipping RAM, hence the need for less. It’s possible Larian aren’t used to dealing with direct storage since the PC doesn’t have it in most systems even now and so just brute forced things the old way on PS5? That’s why MS engineers have to go and show them how to use the new architecture.

NuPNuA,

I didn’t even see a local multiplayer option when I was playing on the deck?

NuPNuA,

How did they manage that, the Deck doesn’t usually get bespoke builds.

NuPNuA,

Seems canonical based on the death star in Ep4.

Gambling sites are already taking bets on who will replace Charles Martinet as the voice of Mario (gonintendo.com)

Bovada, an online betting site, is already taking bets for who people think will be revealed as the voice of Mario. While we honestly have no idea who’s taking the reigns, Bovada has quite a ludicrous list of choices to pick from:...

NuPNuA,

Technically only 1 & 4 ever had story expansions, 1 had the two London packs and 4 had Ballard of Gay Tony and Lost and the Damned. 2,3, VC and SA never got any additional content unless you count the PSP games that used the maps with new missions.
