Hypothetically I don’t see a problem with things like a new entry in Elder Scrolls. The problem (to me) seems more like constantly remaking Skyrim into new editions and for each new console.

Slenderman. The OG. I didn’t like horror of any type and was always so scared. I was in early college years and chaperoning for a church trip and the two kids in my room were high schoolers I was friends with. They wanted to okay it but we’re too scared. Idk what, something about them being too scared to play and making me do it gave me the courage to. Slenderman just looked so goofy in this game. I finally couldn’t take it seriously. These two kids were like cowering behind the hotel bed though lol.

Later it was Amnesia: the Dark Descent. It was tough but I got through it. I played it during 4he middle of the day with the lights on lol. I would pause whenever anything scary happened but I got through it!

Anno 1800 was available for purchase on Steam prior to release but at some point they made a deal with Epic to sell it there for a year. Then it was removed from Steam. If you already bought it you could use it on Steam but everyone else had to wait. You could also directly buy it from Ubisoft’s own store Uplay so in the most strict sense it was not an exclusive contract but pretty damn close. Also it wasn’t a secret. The company talked about it. They had to, because it was literally available for pre purchase on Steam and then suddenly wasn’t.

I disagree. They’re pretty good about not shoving shovelware in your face. I don’t think games should be prevented from entry to the store just because they’re perceived low quality. Where would you draw the line?

I feel you, I’m not denying a correlation between free assets and shovelware but why punish good quality games using free assets? Steam has a pretty generous (relatively speaking) refund policy letting you refund games you’ve bought in the past week that you have played for less than two hours. I feel like most games and especially shovelware games you can know if they’re shit in under two hours. Better to let too many shitty games in and not risk keeping a good one out and let folks get refunds for shitty games than to potentially keep good games out because they don’t meet some weird criteria they can’t quite meet.

BG3 one is so true. The game is clunky and finicky as hell. Everyone praising it as being polished breaks my brain.

Inventory is clunky as fuck. When I Ctrl click multiple items and pick up and add to wares nearly 100% of the time it fails on the first and I have to do it a second time. Dragging items to other characters when inventories are filtered will actually swap with the item that would be in that slot of their pack without the filter rather than the one showing. Opening containers (especially the ones that need an item inserted like puzzles) get covered by the main inventory and I have to drag them over. Everything with moving items around just feels slow as hell in general. I can’t manage characters’ inventory unless they’re in the party so I have to go through the dialogue to kick someone out then let someone join which isn’t all that long but can add up when they’re on opposite sides of camp and you realize you forgot something. The search is nice but why not let us search camp inventory too, that’s where most of my crap is. Items in containers in your inventory can help with clutter but they aren’t added to the hot bar automatically.

Last night I had two enemies spasm out of existence. One of them was so glitched that the game crashed when I killed them. I’ve had multiple enemies just sit as round for nearly ten seconds or more trying to decide what to do before they do it sometimes even at the end of their turn. When dealing with elevation in battles it is absolutely awful to try and target shit above you, there’s no way to have the camera “move up a floor”, you can sort of get around this by selecting an enemy on that floor but it’s tricky. Trying to do anything precise in combat is a pain. There’s no easy way to get you character to jump the maximum distance without moving first for example. Also it’s an annoying choice to make jumping take movement like 5e but also take a bonus action like D&D One, it should be one or the other, not both. There’s no easy way to save 10 ft of movement at the end, you’ll move 20 ft only to realize you have 9.9 ft of movement left and don’t have 10 ft for the jump.

There’s no way to demo what a dye will look like before using it. There’s no way to know if an item it’s dyed and with what. There’s no way to add wares to the barter screen (which is what the name wares seems to imply to me), only on the trade screen.

I’ve had a few dialogues that were confusing and seemed to rely on events that didn’t happen. Astarion told me he was a vampire then later but me but still acted like it was a big reveal moment. When clearing out the Githyanki creche multiple characters said something about how it’s a good thing we didn’t nuke them or something? That was never an option I saw. No idea what they’re talking about.

Characters will willfully walk into things that damage them including spotted traps and AOE spells from the battle they were in rather than walk around them. This is not in turn based mode, this is real time. When in real time why not just walk around it rather than mindlessly walk towards the player? Even if you want to blame me for the traps saying I should be in turn based mode (which is silly because they know the trap is there, it is spotted) when a battle ends with an AOE damage effect still on the field they automatically enter turn based mode and walk to me through it and take damage.

I’ve had times where I told them to walk somewhere only for the game to say I can’t get there so I have to figure out a tricky jump. Then everyone will walk around some nearby path and get to me without doing a jump at all.

Lit areas around characters die to weapons or spells do not show up with the clear outline that stationary lights have when in stealth mode.

This is all shit just off the top of my head. I’m fully aware a lot of it is minor. I’m fully aware a lot of it can be somewhat avoided or dealt with. It just frustrates me to no end to see people defending this game as if their baby is being attacked. Here’s the thing: I love this game! I’ve been enjoying it a lot! But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have bugs. It doesn’t mean it is above criticism. A game can be a great game and still have flaws. It just irks me to no end to see how so many of the reviews of the game call it polished when it’s just not. Especially when the context of a lot of the reviews are spinning a narrative that this game should set a new standard that triple A studios have failed to meet. This feels like every Bethesda game (pre Fallout 76) did on launch: a ton of promise and a lot of fun but very rough around the edges. And I don’t appreciate it when fans of the game mock and victim blame me for problems in the game.

The game rules here are actually very different. I play a ton of 5e D&D and it’s close enough to be useful but different enough to trip me up. S great example I just found out last night after over 80 hours of play as a Paladin: the smite spells last 10 turns and apply to each attack. In 5e the smite spells only affect one attack and are usually worse than divine smite (which isn’t a spell be uses a spell slot) because divine smite you decide to use when you hit so it never wastes a spell slot while the others can miss.

I would copy it but the fucking D&D Beyond app prevents copying. The smite spells in 5e say “on the next hit” basically. A lot of spells in BG3 have simplified descriptions and it’s hard to know when it is different language or a different effect.

I’ve had teams not bother to keep proper history when moving from subversion to git and I’ve also had a DevOps team entirely wipe the history of a new project just because cloning took a long time (and refused to attempt shallow cloning).

So the idea that a company just lets their code “rot” to the point of not even having it anymore because it’s just some legacy thing from over a decade ago is totally unsurprising to me.

Gamers are loving Baldur’s Gate 3 and wowee wow they’re really loving it. It’s a good game.

However some gamers have been SLAMMING the game on Twitter (X). It turns out, Lae’zel may have been too horny due to a bug!

This game is in the height of fanboy denialism. Any criticism, no matter how small or how valid is met with rejection and blaming. It’s like you have to preface and end everything with “I am loving the game and recommend it” or else people will downvote you for not liking the game.

It’s so upsetting seeing this game get praised as one of the most polished games. I guess the bar really is that low these days. I’m glad they’re actively fixing stuff but there’s a lot to fix.

For xcom2 you need to immediately research the upgraded weapons as soon as you begin your campaign. It feels counter intuitive because it takes so long but it really puts you into the correct pace. I don’t remember when it best to upgrade them again or armor but that’s the best start. Also aggressively use grenades because they’re guaranteed hits.

For BG3, be sad there is no overwatch, sorry, I mean readied action like in D&D.

I hate games that don’t give any indication of when you’re supposed to do it. They’ll give you some tutorial on it and say “right before you’re hit” but good luck figuring out if you’re doing it too late or too early.

Don’t waste my time. That’s my biggest thing in games. Death Stranding was fun but holy shit. Everything had animations. Just sooooo many. It made even the most simple tasks take so long. Why do I need to see so much when I deliver a box? Why do I need to see Sam get in a truck? It irks me so much.

The Estus Flask in Dark Souls was great. You couldn’t spam a million of them on a boss fight but you also got them all back when you were safe. There wereots of things to dislike but that was a major positive. And to your point, it’s not buried in a menu either. It’s just right there.

You’re viewing games as perfect and the designers’ vision as always correct. That’s not always true. Take XCom 2. Many people may tell you that ironman mode (prevents save scumming) is the only real way to play but the game is buggy as hell. Not only do things not always work right sometimes the game just crashes. A buddy of mine has lost multiple save files because of it. The game doesn’t force you to use ironman mode so it’s not a counterargument to what you’re saying but it is illustrative of the point I’m making about games not being perfect.

Also, why do you view save scumming as the dominant strategy? In reality, many difficult and unforgiving games all but force players to use specific strategies to win. Everything you’re saying about gamers avoiding fun choices for optimum ones is not unique to save scumming. Many games already force players to do this and things like save scumming can actually allow players to try different builds that are less optimal.

It’s like someone saying the only true way to enjoy a book is by physically reading a physical copy and that audiobooks are more optimal and therefore less fun. No. Different people just want different things.

Many of the B side challenges in Celeste I played with the 90% speed accessibility option. Trying for 30 minutes to try and get a single damn strawberry was just too much for me. I still had a blast playing it.

They could make it like a prequel to one of the games so there’s a slightly more concrete story. Using non linear storytelling could make it feel confusing but that might be annoying. Season 1 of The Witcher I didn’t full understand until my second viewing.

Legality aside because I’m sure there’s always going to be some random law that they will use (or twist) to fight this… With 3DS I remember there was a community provided cloud cracking service. I’m guessing it was either some comically weak algorithm or they found some vulnerability they were able to exploit.

But even then that’s not really a good comparison because if there was some master key (I don’t know the specifics) it is still physically on your 3DS and they weren’t sending them around (or worse, hosting it on a store).

The situation sucks but I understand it from Valve’s point of view. It’s not about whether they think it is okay or not, it’s about them being concerned about liability from Nintendo who are well known for protecting their IP.
