What's your "this is totally fine and I'm going to have a great time" FPS (refresh rate). ?

For me, anything 25 FPS or higher is 100% fine and I’ll be enjoying my time. I never play competitive online shooter games ever, though. All single player ones like GOW and the likes. I game on a 60 Hz 4k monitor. GPU is AMD RX 6600 alongside Ryzen 7 5700G and 32GB RAM. My games are set to meduim most of the time at 4k....

JackbyDev,

Around maybe 40 or so I start to notice it. 50 and higher I’m content. My monitor only supports 60 Hz. Around 20 or less I’m annoyed. It’s tolerable for turn based games though. Not enjoyable, just tolerable.

JackbyDev,

Or even just “Has the menu been closed since it was saved?”

JackbyDev,

There’s also a place in hell for devs who don’t include a “save and quit” in rogue like games because they’re worried people will save scum. As if honest people who can’t devote enough time for a full playthrough are less important than people lying about progress in a non competitive single player game.

JackbyDev,

Literally a single boolean lol

JackbyDev,

People should only be buying EA titles if the current state of the game is worth the price they’re paying for it.

JackbyDev,

As a casual sims enjoyer, it genuinely does feel like they’re salty people liked Sims 3 more than Sims 4 and won’t release an “everything” version of it.

JackbyDev,

If you want this image to be more accurate, put the alien head right next to the muzzle.

JackbyDev,

Helldivers 2 has a super interesting damage model. You can really notice it with a sniper rifle against the bots. You can knock off so many parts of their body.

JackbyDev,

I think the game is meant to abstract away simultaneous actions. So it’s like the alien and you are moving at the same time, not like hitting a stationary target next to you.

But still, missing those 99% hits like this hurt.

JackbyDev,

Why not? On the same way you don’t need amazing art to make a fun game, you don’t need amazing code either. If the game is fun then it’s a success.

JackbyDev,

I was knee deep in a plot to get one of my children on the throne of France in CK3 when I stopped playing. I was doing something like setting up a matrilineal marriage with the very old king’s grandson of his second born son while plotting to murder the firstborn son. The king’s firstborn son managed to pop out an heir which I had to murder as well. What was funny was how om board all of the baby king’s court was with murdering him. Basically everyone joined in lol.

JackbyDev,

Oh shit, is it? Should I check it out? I could go for some zen!

JackbyDev,

“I know I never get it, but the game and dev both say it really is 1 in 4! So surely I should buy this!”

Nope!

🤡

JackbyDev,

I got a new 3070 ti GPU back in like 2022 but my CPU is from 2009 so a lot of stuff has been bottle necked. I got everything but the case for my new computer. It will be here Saturday. I’m so excited!

I’m looking forward to Death Stranding and Helldivers 2 which both physically couldn’t run on my CPU because they used instructions made after 2011 or something. Elden Ring wouldn’t get more than like 20 to 25 FPS for me. So many little things I’m looking forward to.

I’m hoping they work with Linux, though.

JackbyDev,

As great as Gaben and Valve are his word doesn’t mean anything (it’s not a personal attack either, it’s just that it isn’t anything binding). Luckily if they fail to keep their promises (or legally cannot) then the crack community will step in. I’m pretty sure they cracked Steam DRM ages ago. I remember a friend using it for Left 4 Dead back in the day.

JackbyDev, (edited )

I totally understand your point, but when people talk about “you own nothing” they don’t really mean you “own” the content on physical media, they mean it doesn’t have DRM that requires an online service. You’re technically correct, but your pedantry is making you miss the forest for the trees, basically.

JackbyDev,

What they mean is that technically you still are being granted a license to use it. The same was true for things like DVD movies. They’re technically correct, but missing the point.

JackbyDev,

People here claim, that just because GOG cannot remote wipe your drive, people buying off GOG have a perpetual right to the games they’ve bought.

I think it’s pretty clear from context that they mean they have the ability to perpetually play the games because of the lack of DRM, not the right.

JackbyDev,

Nobody is saying otherwise.

JackbyDev,

Nobody is saying otherwise.

JackbyDev,

GOG is the only big option if you want to own the games you purchase.

I think it’s pretty clear from context that they mean they have the ability to perpetually play the games because of the lack of DRM, not the right.

JackbyDev,

No it’s not. If Steam goes down you cannot keep playing your games without using a crack to get around the DRM.

JackbyDev,

Luigi Mangione played Among Us, an assassination game!

JackbyDev,

It’s near the line, I agree, I see your point, but it’s just the terminology and no gambling mechanics. You don’t set the ante, you just play. They could change the name ante to level and it would be the same. It’s not like you look at your stuff and decide how much you’re willing to risk. (You could argue skipping blinds is this sort of risk analysis like gambling but that’s hardly unique to Balatro.) There is no benefit from stopping earlier because if you lose on ante one or lose on ante seven it’s the same outcome. Also, if you choose to restart one ante one or ante seven it’s the same outcome. Because it’s just a score keeping mechanism. Nothing more.

JackbyDev,

It’s fun until you close the shop and realize what the boss is and can’t reopen the shop lol.

JackbyDev,

Makes me wonder if the report was for something like itch.io/blah but it took the whole site down. If they’re not being dishonest, I could see going to registrar about a site imitating to be yours for phishing.

Funko still deserves some flak for, at least, using an automated tool (or a setting) that is so insanely aggressive. Maybe the registrar holds some blame too.

JackbyDev,

Hey, so if BrandShield is being honest, what’s Itch’s registrar? What do they have to say? 🍿 This keeps getting deeper.

JackbyDev,

Those subdomains are not managed or controlled by the registrar

I might be getting the terminology wrong, I’ve not had to work too closely with the specifics of subdomains in my career, lol. But you can definitely have blah.itch.io points to a different IP than itch.io and that’s done through DNS. So if they suspected blah.itch.io to be a phishing site imitating Funko’s site, it makes sense that they’d report it to the people controlling that.

And yeah, it looks like Itch does use sub domains for user pages instead of URL paths. xk.itch.io So if some user’s page was trying to imitate Funk’s site then I could see this line of thought. I’d need to see the page that was supposedly imitating and what it was imitating to really make a judgement call though.

JackbyDev,

So now we know that Brandshield is knowingly making false accusations that have potentially serious consequences for their victims.

They said their platform is “AI driven” which could very easily imply this was an automated process with no human making a decision. It’s still bad, but a different kind of bad than “knowingly” making a decision.

JackbyDev,

I’m not trying to exonerate them of any blame, I’m just saying “knowingly” implies a human looking at something and making a decision as opposed to a machine making a mistake.

JackbyDev,

I’m not trying to exonerate them of any blame

JackbyDev,

Balatro. I only own it on Android. I don’t think the experience is significantly reduced on Android as opposed to PC/other platforms.

JackbyDev,

It’s still useful because others will have the same question.

JackbyDev,

I don’t necessarily see the problem. It’s not like every construction is up to code.

Is Kickstarter Still Viable for Video Games? (www.youtube.com) angielski

I researched hundreds of Kickstarter campaigns since 2021 to find the most successful, tracking how much money they earned, how many backers they had, their country of origin, and whether or not they’ve since released. What I found might surprise you! Or it might not! Or maybe you’ll be mildly interested!

JackbyDev,

Haven’t watched the vid yet, but my opinion on Kickstarter is that funding anything other than things like board games isn’t worth the risk. With simple physical objects they’re done and just need money to begin mass production.

I hate when a PC game is ONLY available on Epic Games store (lemmy.world) angielski

Nothing more disappointing to me than seeing a game I might enjoy… and then it’s only available on PC on Epic Games store. Why can’t it be available on Epic, Xbox game store and Steam? It’s so annoying, like you have no choice but to use Epic… which I would literally do ANYTHING not to use.

JackbyDev,

With regards to

People don’t want monopolies because companies can abuse their position to hurt consumers.

It’s important to remember that it’s not only buyers, but developers that use Steam. Steam is currently involved in a lawsuit with developers.

The “commission” would be Valve’s cut on sales made through Steam, which starts at 30% and drops to 20% as sales increase. Valve defended the percentage as “industry standard” when Wolfire’s lawsuit was first filed, but that’s no longer the case: The Epic Games Store and Microsoft both take just 12% of sales made through their stores.

pcgamer.com/…/the-antitrust-lawsuit-against-steam…

Also relevant, from 2021 but the same lawsuit,

The Wolfire lawsuit estimates that Valve controls “approximately 75 percent” of the $30 billion market for PC game sales, a number that lines up with other public estimates of Steam’s dominance.

arstechnica.com/…/humble-bundle-creator-brings-an…

I like Steam, I’m not hating on Steam, but rushing to defend it from people saying it’s a monopoly (or calling Epic Games Store a monopoly) is very much denying reality.

JackbyDev,

Anyone believing Steam isn’t a monopoly is seriously uninformed on the topic or letting their enjoy enjoyment of the platform cloud their view of reality.

While it sucks to have games get exclusivity agreements with EGS when EGS sucks compared to Steam, it doesn’t suddenly mean that Steam isn’t a monopoly.

JackbyDev,

It’s important to remember that it’s not only buyers, but developers that use Steam. Steam is currently involved in a lawsuit with developers.

Actually, it’s generally publishers, not developers that end up paying the 30% cut.

I’m keeping the model simple by equating publisher with developer. Basically, you’ve got the consumer, the store, and the supplier. That some (most) developer studios go through a publisher for funding is a business practice that’s actually unrelated to Steam. Especially because they allow indie content.

JackbyDev,

Calling denuvo malware is sort of leaning towards hyperbole (barely), but, holy shit, “monitor ram”? That’s literally spyware.

JackbyDev,

Exactly!

JackbyDev,

It was interesting learning about the insane shit firewalls and drivers did prior to vista.

JackbyDev,

First I’m hearing of it.

JackbyDev,

I definitely remember they had drugs to make them affectionate of and protectors of the Little Sisters. With things like concept art it’s hard to know how early in the process it was. Big Daddy’s could’ve been nothing more than “boss type enemy with old timey diving suit.” They could’ve been concepting their origins and purpose as well. The “guns” the middle and left are holding could also look like a tool. It could be something that serves as both. The mech suit from Aliens comes to mind, which was essentially the equivalent of fighting a bear with a forklift lol. Or maybe something like the rail spike gun from Fallout is a better comparison.

It could also be that they planned on each Big Daddy being a little different, or at least more different types than there were. I just double checked the wiki and there were two in the first game: the Bouncer (the iconic one from the cover) and Rosie. Also, it’s saying the original candidates for the Big Daddy program were criminals and dissidents. The idea that in the right wing dystopia of Rapture they’d force invalids into the Big Daddy program to make them “useful” isn’t terribly far fetched.

Maybe it was scrapped because there weren’t many spaces where wheelchair bound enemies made sense.
