It is still a fun game against everything people say. At least my SO and I have been enjoying our time with the game a lot

If any of you guys have a PS4 lying around gathering dust, consider jailbreaking it. Depending on the firmware, it is pretty easy to do and opens up a lot of possibilities. Surely better than being neglected :)

Edit: Firmwares up to 11.00 are jailbreakable as of recently. 11.00 is from around late 2022, so if you have a console that hasn’t been in use since then, there’s a good chance you can jailbreak it. Base model, Slim, or Pro - doesn’t matter

Well, obviously piracy if you’re into that. Apart from that, using cheats for games, dumping your physical games and having a permanent copy you can use without the CD and an active license (probably possible with a digital game too I assume? not sure), applying patches like a 60fps patch for Bloodborne, emulation of PS1, PS2, PSP and a bunch of other consoles etc etc.

Running Linux if you’re that kind of person :P

The HDD is replacable and afaik, you can insert an SSD too. Not sure about the sizes, but an internet search should point you the right direction.

Not familiar with NAS. Isn’t that some kind of server?

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Actually not anymore. There’s been a recent breakthrough that led to a new exploit up to 11.00 being possible now. 11.00 is from, like, late 2022 I think? Obviously not an option if your PS4 has been in regular use recently, but I lucked out and got an 11.00 console from a friend of mine who hadn’t been using the PS4 for a while.

If you’re on a newer firmware, there is no way of reverting back to 11.00, unfortunately, unless you’re up for some soldering.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Sadly, only around 40ish fps on a base model but very cool nonetheless. The framerate and semi-smoothness kinda puts it in an uncanny valley territory for me since it looks smoother but also not smoother at the same time coming from PS5 performance. Lies of P runs a lot better in comparison even though it’s graphically more demanding, I assume

Yes, it does. The standard method is to use a PC with Linux or Windows and install a program that triggers the jailbreak on your PS4 whilst connected to it via ethernet cable. Using a TV makes it a little more hassle-free depending on your setup since you’re turning on your TV anyways and don’t need to use the PC at all.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Have recently jailbroken my PS4 and am now contemplating rooting my TV as well. We bought it a couple of years ago and have never connected it to the internet, so the model plus WebOS version should be compatible with the root.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

You have access to specific homebrew apps that add features and allow for shenanigans like running an exploit off the TV itself instead of needing a PC like in this case

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

On the off-chance that anyone here tried the jailbreak method using your TV:

I was able to root my TV using rootmy.tv really easily and am now trying to connect my PC to the TV using SSH or telnet in order to run a couple commands and send the needed files to trigger the jailbreak. However, I can’t for the life of me connect using SSH or telnet - I get a “connection timeout” error everytime, making it impossible to log into root. The IP address and the port I enter are both correct (22 or 23 for the port depending on if SSH or telnet is chosen).

I tried a couple methods to install OpenSSH since in my research it looked like this might be an issue which also didn’t work, tried disabling my firewall, adding the program to the exception list in my firewall etc. - nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

Question for those that do: do you also pirate indie games? I am also inclined to just pirate Nintendo games as I already do on my 2DS, but I’d kinda feel bad about not giving money to actually good developers like Supergiant Games

Edit: Not sure about the downvotes. I’m asking a genuine question

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Yea no doubt. Do you usually buy games on sale or full retail price?

Pokemon? Sounds interesting. What was it about?

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Do you have a rundown of what that means? First time I’m hearing about this

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Oh wow. Are there any plans to have this removed? Isn’t this quite a major privacy concern?

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

I applied for a job as a QA at Nintendo and barely was not taken. Hearing about all of the bad experiences people have had working as QAs, maybe it’s for the better lol

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace comes to mind

Veteran Videogame Analyst: Subscription growth has flattened [in video games] (files.catbox.moe) angielski

Adding a bit more to the discussion on whether game subscription can be “the future”, it looks like despite the heavy push made in the past decade, subscriptions only make up 10% of total video game spending in the US....

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Worth noting that game trials on PS+ are kept behind the highest tier of PS+. Outside of that, there isn’t too much of interest encouraging you to pick up that subscription in my books since the classics Sony’s been putting publishing there aren’t really that good. Streaming PS5 games sounds nice but is highly dependent on your internet connection. Not sure if I’m missing anything.

I’m not getting my hopes up for the upcoming Fable installment on PS, but I’m getting my hopes up for the upcoming Fable installment on PS.

Disco Elysium - Switch or Xbox/PS5

As in the title - its on sale on all consoles at the moment for a very good price and I was wondering what console should I get it on. I like the idea of playing it on the go and I thought as it looks like it should run no difference what console im playing it. But I heard some mixed reviews regarding the performance on Switch.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Definitely watch some comparison videos of the performance and make a decision based on that. If you’re likely to play the game on the go, then go for the Switch version. I myself realised, however, that I wouldn’t be playing the game on the go at all since my SO was interested too, so I got the game for PS5 for the better performance.

I think the performance isn’t stellar on Switch, but you can make it work since nothing too crazy is going on in the game that would require perfect framerate and resolution - most of the game is reading anyway.

Enjoy your time, whichever version you choose!

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Dude, I only just played the games for the very first time earlier this year and I absolutely feel what you mean. It’s the very first piece of music you hear when you start the game, is used throughout the trilogy in pivotal moments, and is the very last theme that plays in the third game. So awesome

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

I do see that the narrative and the gameplay have some flaws, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the games and the ~100h it took me to finish the trilogy. The Citadel DLC was probably my favourite part of the entire series. I’d also probably put the games in my top x favourite games.

If you’re interested in Skyrim, Fudgemuppet is awesome. They’ve made content for what must be a decade now, discussing all kinds of aspects of Elder Scrolls games with a focus on Skyrim - from lore to builds to discussions of the upcoming TES IV. Can’t recommend them enough to get a good grasp on Elder Scrolls lore.

Ghostcharm is also an amazing content creator who makes, among other formats, “villainpedia” and “heropedia” entries for video game characters and explores the different facets and nuances of the discussed characters. Some of the characters are Glados from Portal, Mancar Cameron from Oblivion or even more nuanced characters like Arthas from the Warcraft series or the Daedric prince Sheogorath from the Elder Scrolls (more specifically the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion). Really interesting lore and analysis videos, huge recommendation.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Dude, I remember people going OFF on Returnal not offering any saves and people having to keep their consoles in rest mode for days at an end because they wouldn’t want their runs to end. I kept arguing with people on rexxit that any respectable rogue-lite/-like has a save function - STS, Hades, Dead Cells - yet they still kept arguing that implenting saves would “ruin the vision of the game” and “make it too easy”.

Guess what Housemarque did: they added a save on exit option. You can now suspend your run and finish it whenever. Not having to potentially brick your console just because you can’t save mid-game sure is a boon lol. The game sure got a lot easier with this implemented. /s

You might enjoy Frostpunk. It’s a very similar gameplay loop.

v4ld1z,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

That was my first thought! I’ve actually been recommended to try it sometime if I like Frostpunk. They seem quite similar in gameplay from what I’ve seen and heard.
