On the Game Boy Advance, there’s Punch King

…and Wade Hixton’s Counter Punch.

I haven’t played either of them, so no promises that they’re good!

Metroid II is my all-time favorite game in the series. It introduces her ship, introduces her iconic look, and is the last game in the series to not include the “break this with this item” blocks. I just love everything about that game.

Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu

FYI we got this game when we we got our Switch and it sat, untouched, for YEARS, until I finally picked it up a few months ago. Honestly, I REALLY enjoyed it! BUT… the first 30 minutes to an hour are very poorly done, and are soooo boring. After that it hooked me.

As someone who’s favorite game in the series is the original Pokémon Red, I think this remake was quite well done. It looks great (much better than Sword / Shield in my opinion), and really trims out a lot of the fluff and grind of the classic games.

Also if he’s playing, you can use the second controller to join him and casually help him catch and battle Pokémon. It’s cute. :)

Let me know if you want any more in depth review or info.

I recently discovered IsabelleChiming and I am in love. They do remakes of classic gaming soundtracks.

…and I wrote the soundtrack to the recent Game Boy Color homebrew game, Dangan GB2, if you’re interested… 👀

I can’t see the name Apogee without hearing the fanfare.

I miss Wacky Wheels.

I came here to say the original NES Metroid game! Metroids still terrify me. 😆

But yeah, Metroid Fusion was so scary it caused me to take a three year break before I could finish it. 😅

It’s from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, if anyone else was as confused as I was. 😅

Quest for Camelot

Oh, interesting! It’s a top down Zelda-like action adventure game. It’s actually not too bad! It’s also one of the most common, absolute cheapest GBC cartridges you can buy. 😅

Played 8 hours last night so this is a very early impression

HOLY CRAP it takes like 25 minutes to play through DuckTales on the NES, I guess I’m not used to modern games. 😆

Anyway, thanks for the great write-up!

I always find it fascinating when they have to make a trailer for an incredibly violent video game but still have it be approved for general audiences. It has to be edited to perfection, down to the frame, to show violence without any of the violence. 😅

It was years after the Switch came out that I finally decided to get one, and honestly the one game that combined me to get it was Link’s Awakening. I love that game so much!

Over the years, I ended up spending the most time playing Animal Crossing. I beat Mario Odyssey and it was nice. I really could not get into Breath of the Wild at all, or the sequel.

What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

I think the most common answer is going to be Tears of the Kingdom, and that is one for me that stands out for sure, but I will try to add some more unique inputs as well. Many are games that came out longer than a year ago, but i didnt get around to playing until more recently....

The Guardian Legend for NES. I never heard of it until about a month ago and I am OBSESSED. I played through it on an emulator, bought the cartridge, and now I’m playing through it again on an NES. It’s a combination of Zelda 1 exploration and a vertical shoot 'em up with a dash of metroidvania, set on a futuristic space station. I can go on and on about how good it is so I’m working on a long form review as I play through it again.

I really enjoy the “Was it good?” series by Josh Strife! I guess technically they aren’t long plays, he plays through older, fondly remembered games, trims the recordings, and adds great commentary. The videos are still quite long though. I especially enjoyed his commentary of Tomb Raider (the original).

…I guess I’ll also mention, I also do some let’s plays with my friend 👀 but I don’t think they’re really anything special. We just enjoy retro video games and chatting!

What are your favorite games to play on it? :)

I still have and play games regularly on my original Game Boy but I got to try the Analogue Pocket at a friend’s house, it was really nice!

That’s so fun!

By the way I recently played through both CD-i games, Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon, and I legit LOVE them. Once I understood the controls and the gameplay that the developers were going for it all just kind of clicked. If you have any interest in giving them a real try, I recommend downloading the remastered versions for PC and checking them out. :)

This sounds like a fun project! :) I’ve only played one game in this genre, Cave Noire for Game Boy. It has randomly generated dungeons. It’s turn based. There’s no stats to level up, instead the player just has to improve their own gameplay strategy. There’s 40 stages (to put it simply), each getting a little harder. After you beat a stage the game saves and you never have to play that one again. How would you classify it?
