BumpingFuglies,

To me, the obvious answer is to do away with the concept of “gender” altogether. It’s a societal construct that doesn’t really need to exist in video game character creation, anyway.

Everybody is born one of two biological sexes: male or female. There. Those are your choices. Call it “apparent sex” and include a pronoun option to allow for players who want to roleplay gender nonconforming characters.

BumpingFuglies,

Technically there is an extremely small amount of people born as both sexes (intersex), but they tend to have appearances that favor one sex over the other, so from a game development perspective, they’re covered by having two sex options.

BumpingFuglies, (edited )

How so? Biological sex is a quantifiable fact. Every sexually reproducing species on the planet has two sexes, easily identified by gamete size - males have small gametes and females have large gametes.

I don’t wanna start a flame war, but the science on this is sound. Sure, in science, nothing is absolute, but there’s never been any evidence of more than two sexes.

BumpingFuglies,

Eek, this reads like a white person getting upset about someone using “black” instead of “African American”

Who’s being excluded here? My suggestion was to change ‘sex’ in video game character creation to ‘apparent sex.’

BumpingFuglies,

Man, I thought I’d found my people in this community, but my perfectly civil comment discussing scientific definitions of ‘sex’ was removed. That shows that this is likely just another echo chamber that can’t abide civil conversation around scientific facts when said facts make people feel icky.

The worst part is I’m on your side. I’m all in on inclusivity and representation. I’m trans. I’m bisexual. I’m just open-minded, seemingly unlike whichever mod removed my comment.

You, apotheotic, seem civil enough. I was looking forward to discussing biological sex with you, maybe expanding my understanding in the process, but it’s not worth trying to have a conversation if I have to worry about my responses being unceremoniously removed. For what it’s worth, your reply has inspired me to do some more reading on the subject.

Reddit mod practices seem to have bled into every corner of Lemmy. Community: blocked. Good riddance.

BumpingFuglies,

Such a dumb move. This won’t help sales, but it certainly will hurt them (though, to be fair, probably not much). Sex sells. And the people who are offended by this wouldn’t have bought the game in the first place.

I’m just so annoyed by this recent resurgence of Puritan-esque prudishness. Humans are sexual beings! We shouldn’t be ashamed of or offended by sexuality; we should embrace it! And if people are worried about unequal representation, the solution is simple: put sexy men in the game, too, and maybe an option for players to toggle either. Everybody wins.

BumpingFuglies,

I don’t know the game well - never played its original release and I likely won’t play this remake - but from what I understand, the women in question are zombies, so consent isn’t really a factor.

If anything, removing this feature slightly reduces immersion and significantly changes the main character’s personality. I can understand why someone who was a fan of the original would be hesitant to get the remake, since the main character is a different person, morally speaking.

It’s like Star Wars - Han shot first, and changing that doesn’t change the story in any real way, but it significantly changes Han’s character.

BumpingFuglies,

Cold, actually.

Getting the Skyrim itch again... Any mod recommendations to freshen it up? angielski

Previously I’ve been pretty gentle with modding that game - things like SkyUI to make it a bit more PC friendly, utility mods like the one limits soul gems to ONLY being filled with their highest tier (no more wasting a grand by filling it with a mudcrab). Also LockPick Pro to effectively skip lockpicking, cuz I hate...

BumpingFuglies,

If you really want a fresh experience and don’t wanna spend more time modding than actually playing, I cannot recommend more strongly Wabbajack. It’s a fully automated modlist installer with a huge gallery of available lists.

Some of the available modlists are foundational, giving you just the essentials (Engine tweaks, HD assets, community bug fixes, etc.), and some are total conversions, turning the game into a fully-realized modern third-person action game, with controls, animations, and graphics as good as any modern game.

It does everything for you, from installing Mod Organizer 2 to creating game launch shortcuts, and everything in between. All you have to do is log into Nexus (and whatever other mod sites your modlist of choice might use). It’s worth getting Nexus Premium at least temporarily to speed up the process.

Here is the Skyrim Special Edition modlist gallery.

BumpingFuglies,

The important distinction, I believe, is that Kai Winn and Dukat were villains, characters designed to be hated. Wesley was supposed to be a precocious scamp, bringing levity and juvenility to an otherwise dry and mature crew, but just ended up being… Wesley.

BumpingFuglies,

I don’t consider Star Wars to be sci-fi. It’s a futuristic space fantasy.

Also, Star Trek Enterprise is one of the best Trek series, IMO. Top 5.

There’ve been a few great games to recently release out of Early Access, so these:

  • Secrets of Grindea, a SNES-style action RPG with tongue-in-cheek writing and open character progression
  • Spiritfall, a platform fighter roguelite
  • Spell Disk, a roguelite with an interesting, intricate spell chain system
BumpingFuglies,

So excited for this! I bought into the beta about a decade ago and have been reading the dev logs on secretsofgrindea.com every so often since then.

It’s a top-notch classic-style isometric RPG with tongue-in-cheek writing, great character building, and a roguelike mode.

BumpingFuglies,

I played a little bit on my Steam Deck during my lunch break at work. 1.0 massively improved controller and Linux support, so it runs on the Deck perfectly out of the box now!

The one thing it’s missing is a way to turn in place. Makes precision aiming very difficult with a controller.

BumpingFuglies,

For me, it has been and probably always will be Azure Dreams on PS1. An early mystery dungeon with elements of monster catcher, town builder, and dating simulator. Had a decent amount of replayability due to exclusive romance paths and procedurally generated dungeons.

The only way to play it nowadays is using an emulator, as it was a rare find even in its heyday.

BumpingFuglies,

Interesting. I didn’t even know the Mana games had multiplayer. I’ve always played them for the replayability and character building (and the story, of course).

Being able to play the fan translation of Seiken Densetsu 3 in the early aughts was what really cemented my love for the series. I was ecstatic to learn that its remake was made so faithfully.

BumpingFuglies,

indie

You keep using that word, AAA developer/publisher Square Enix. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

BumpingFuglies,

You’ve just unlocked a painful childhood memory of mine. A childhood friend pronounced Sephiroth as “Seph-eye-roth” and Tifa as “Tiffay”

Oddly, he got Aerith right.

BumpingFuglies,

Yoko? Oh, no. It’s Yoku’s Island Express, and it’s fantastic.

BumpingFuglies,

Incorrect. Vanilla, unmodded Skyrim is one of the best games of all time, despite the issues. Mods just bring it from a 9/10 to an 11/10.

See? I can voice my opinions as if they’re objective fact, too.

BumpingFuglies,

Nobody’s said the game was flawless, but I, at least, never experienced any bugs or design issues that detracted from the overall incredible experience.

Nobody in their right mind will pretend there weren’t bugs, or that the quests or talent trees or crafting or alchemy were well made

You’re conflating facts with opinion. I thought the quests and perk trees were, for the most part, very well made.

BumpingFuglies,

Personally, I think it’s absurd to remove a mod that harms nobody. As a nonbinary person, I was ecstatic to see “they/them” as a pronoun choice, but I understand that having to choose pronouns can be triggering for some people, just as much as not having the option can be triggering for others. Why not let people play the game the way they want? Isn’t that the appeal of a Bethesda game, after all?

I’m pretty sure Nexus Mods admins have the ability to lock comments on a mod - why not just do that for controversial mods like this one? People who want it could still use it, just without the hatred and vitriol that might otherwise be in the comments.

BumpingFuglies,

Ah, I didn’t realize. That is definitely good justification for removing the mod.
