Coelacanth, do games w Would you considering watching playthroughs of a game the same as playing that game?

It’s not really the same, but it can be enjoyable in its own way. I watch a lot of Let’s Plays, but I tend to do so mostly for games I’ve already played myself, substituting it for a second playthrough. You can watch it mostly in the background - or skip through the filler - and still get another’s perspective on the best bits.

It’s also perfectly valid to watch playthroughs for games you are interested in experiencing but would not enjoy yourself. Very difficult games like Hollow Knight are a common example for this. It will give you an approximation without driving you to frustration - or getting stuck and unable to finish.

It’s never going to be the same though since the interactive element will be missing, and that aspect is the defining feature of games as an artform.

New market opportunity! Steam has been banned from participating, meaning even a crappy quality platform can now compete. Though, payment processing will be the hitch, I would guess…

This explains why I can’t buy games right now. I tried to use PayPal and it failed but now my account seems to be blocked from any purchase. Not even direct card. When I asked support they demanded a screenshot of my cart.

Dude, Gabe, I just want to play outer wilds. There’s no tits, let alone incest in Outer wilds. I’ve never bought a porn game in my life. Why am I being punished for a billionaire company’s moral panic?

I was playing the beta Project Zomboid with the latest experimental stuff. Got scratched with my regular prone to sickness debuff. Was game over, got zombified and a 1k kill count character was finished.

Voroxpete,

For the record (mostly saying this for the benefit of people who don’t play but might) Zomboid is one of the most customizable games ever. Rules like “How zombie virus transmits” are completely up to you. My wife and I play together and we decided that all survivors are immune to the virus in our world, so we turned off transmission entirely. It just made more sense to us if it was something like an airborne pathogen.

I often describe Project Zomboid as a toolkit for creating your own personal zombie apocalypse.

That’s interesting. Will keep in mind if I can ever convince someone to play it.

Voroxpete,

Basically everything can be set through server / game rules. How do zombies work (speed, strength, toughness, hearing, vision, nocturnal or not, memory, intelligence, etc), how does the virus work, loot availability, XP gain, how long its been since the outbreak, whether power and water should shut off at some point, and so many other things. And that’s all without even touching a single mod. It’s incredibly versatile.

Kalothar,

And now I’m going to play it again lol

I adore how Zomboid is very grounded like that. It feels like it purposefully avoids giving the player a power fantasy. Or more accurately I’d say it tries to deceive the player by making them think they’re powerful but then rips it away by throwing something at them. It’s really addicting, I have to imagine it’s not for everyone though

Gaylactus, do games w Would you considering watching playthroughs of a game the same as playing that game?

No. If I want a walkthrough I search for some written article. I don’t even understand the point of seeing other ppl playing games, that was always something that confused me.

Rhynoplaz,

I think that’s more of a “I want information so I can play this game.” and I totally agree. I look for things I can read first, and in some cases, I might want a video if I know what to do, but I’m not sure how and watching someone else would help me accomplish that.

For the games that are more like interactive stories, I completely understand wanting to watch the story without having to sit through all the grinding or wandering around that happens in between key moments.

Gaylactus,

Well, ofc on some occasions I might watch a video to better understand something specific, but that’s really the last resort, as I prefer to play the game myself. I still don’t understand your argument, because unless you are watching a heavily edited video, you still need to watch all the “grinding”. I also find grinding enjoyable… it falls under the obsessive compulsive in me., so I just rather grind myself! =)

Rhynoplaz,

No argument here, I think we’re both talking about different things, and it’s really not worth arguing semantics to try getting on the same page. No worries.

Watching a game be played is like listening to someone read you the script of a movie imo.

Is watching a football game the same as playing a foodball game?

It will be a completely different experience - but as long as you enjoy it… who cares? You do what brings you joy.

No. Watching a playthrough is completely passive vs. playing through, interactive. Doing the actual playing through will light up distinct brain regions that passive consumption doesn’t.

Utterly not.

Reading what you have here has been wonderful. Thank you!

Thank you! I enjoy discussing video games (and movies, but my movie review blog has been abandoned for the past couple years), and I’ve always wanted to find someone who goes into a little depth on games; someone who introduces people to the premise of a game and gets them interested. The little summary on Steam isn’t always enough to let me know if it’s going to be fun or not.

Since I couldn’t find any content like that, I decided to just create it myself. I’m retired young and I got nothing else going on, so why not?
